The effective conductivity of a periodic lattice of circular inclusions
We determine the effective conductivity of a two-dimensional composite
consisting of a doubly periodic array of identical circular cylinders within a
homogeneous matrix. We obtain an exact analytic expression for the effective
conductivity tensor as well as its expansion in terms of volume fraction of the
cylinders. Results are illustrated by examples.Comment: 21 pages, 5 figure
Influence of topography on tide propagation and amplification in semi-enclosed basins
An idealized model for tide propagation and amplification in semi-enclosed rectangular basins is presented, accounting for depth differences by a combination of longitudinal and lateral topographic steps. The basin geometry is formed by several adjacent compartments of identical width, each having either a uniform depth or two depths separated by a transverse topographic step. The problem is forced by an incoming Kelvin wave at the open end, while allowing waves to radiate outward. The solution in each compartment is written as the superposition of (semi)-analytical wave solutions in an infinite channel, individually satisfying the depth-averaged linear shallow water equations on the f plane, including bottom friction. A collocation technique is employed to satisfy continuity of elevation and flux across the longitudinal topographic steps between the compartments. The model results show that the tidal wave in shallow parts displays slower propagation, enhanced dissipation and amplified amplitudes. This reveals a resonance mechanism, occurring when\ud
the length of the shallow end is roughly an odd multiple of the quarter Kelvin wavelength. Alternatively, for sufficiently wide basins, also PoincarĂ© waves may become resonant. A transverse step implies different wavelengths of the incoming and reflected Kelvin wave, leading to increased amplitudes in shallow regions and a shift of amphidromic points in the direction of the deeper part. Including the shallow parts near the basinâs closed end (thus capturing the Kelvin resonance mechanism) is essential to reproduce semi-diurnal and diurnal\ud

Applying systematic review search methods to the grey literature: a case study examining guidelines for school-based breakfast programs in Canada
Grey literature is an important source of information for large-scale review syntheses. However, there
are many characteristics of grey literature that make it difficult to search systematically. Further, there is no âgold
standardâ for rigorous systematic grey literature search methods and few resources on how to conduct this type of
search. This paper describes systematic review search methods that were developed and applied to complete a
case study systematic review of grey literature that examined guidelines for school-based breakfast programs in
Canada.
Methods: A grey literature search plan was developed to incorporate four different searching strategies: (1) grey
literature databases, (2) customized Google search engines, (3) targeted websites, and (4) consultation with contact
experts. These complementary strategies were used to minimize the risk of omitting relevant sources. Since abstracts
are often unavailable in grey literature documents, itemsâ abstracts, executive summaries, or table of contents
(whichever was available) were screened. Screening of publicationsâ full-text followed. Data were extracted on the
organization, year published, who they were developed by, intended audience, goal/objectives of document, sources
of evidence/resources cited, meals mentioned in the guidelines, and recommendations for program delivery.
Results: The search strategies for identifying and screening publications for inclusion in the case study review was
found to be manageable, comprehensive, and intuitive when applied in practice. The four search strategies of the grey
literature search plan yielded 302 potentially relevant items for screening. Following the screening process, 15
publications that met all eligibility criteria remained and were included in the case study systematic review. The
high-level findings of the case study systematic review are briefly described.
Conclusions: This article demonstrated a feasible and seemingly robust method for applying systematic search
strategies to identify web-based resources in the grey literature. The search strategy we developed and tested is
amenable to adaptation to identify other types of grey literature from other disciplines and answering a wide
range of research questions. This method should be further adapted and tested in future research syntheses
Algorithmic decidability of Engel's property for automaton groups
We consider decidability problems associated with Engel's identity
( for a long enough commutator sequence) in groups
generated by an automaton. We give a partial algorithm that decides, given
, whether an Engel identity is satisfied. It succeeds, importantly, in
proving that Grigorchuk's -group is not Engel. We consider next the problem
of recognizing Engel elements, namely elements such that the map
attracts to . Although this problem seems intractable in
general, we prove that it is decidable for Grigorchuk's group: Engel elements
are precisely those of order at most . Our computations were implemented
using the package FR within the computer algebra system GAP
The effects of parasitism and body length on positioning within wild fish shoals
The influence of body length and parasitism on the positioning behaviour of individuals in wild fish shoals was investigated by a novel means of capturing entire shoals of the banded killifish (Fundulus diaphanus, Lesueur) using a grid-net that maintained the two-dimensional positions of individuals within shoals.
Fish in the front section of a shoal were larger than those in the rear.
Individuals parasitized by the digenean trematode (Crassiphiala bulboglossa, Haitsma) showed a tendency to occupy the front of shoals. Parasitized fish were also found more in peripheral positions than central ones in a significant number of shoals.
Shoal geometry was affected by the overall parasite prevalence of shoal members; shoals with high parasite prevalence displayed increasingly phallanx-like shoal formations, whereas shoals with low prevalence were more elliptical.
There was no relationship between body length and parasite abundance or prevalence in the fish population which suggests body length and parasite status are independent predictors of positioning behaviour.
Solitary individuals found outside shoals were both more likely to be parasitized and had higher parasite abundance than individuals engaged in shoaling.
Differences in the shoaling behaviour of parasitized and unparasitized fish are discussed in the context of the adaptive manipulation hypothesis
A prospective study of cumulative job stress in relation to mental health
BACKGROUND: This study tests associations between psychosocial stress at work measured by the effort-reward imbalance model in a dynamic perspective, and multiple indicators of poor mental health, in a prospective design. METHODS: 1986 male and female employees from four Belgian enterprises were followed-up over one year within the framework of the Somstress study. Based on two consecutive measurements, an index of cumulative job stress was constructed and its associations with five indicators of mental health were studied, excluding caseness at entry (for depression, anxiety, somatisation, chronic fatigue and psychotropic drug consumption respectively). Taking into account the longitudinal design, four categories of job stress are defined: 1) employees free from stress at both measures, 2) job stress present at first measure but not at the second one, 3) recent onset of job stress as evidenced by second measure 4) workers exposed to stress at both measures. Multivariate logistic regression with appropriate adjustments was applied. RESULTS: In bivariate analysis, a clear graded association of cumulative job stress with all five mental health indicators is observed, both in men and women. In multivariate logistic regression analysis, recent onset of stress is strongly associated with poor mental health among men (odds ratios ranging from 1.8 to 4.6), while cumulative stress shows strongest effects on mental health in women (odds ratios ranging from 1.4 to 7.1). CONCLUSION: Cumulative experience and recent onset of job stress in terms of high effort spent and low reward received is associated with elevated risk of all five indicators of poor mental health at follow-up in a large cohort of employees
Coherence of long-term stratospheric ozone vertical distribution time series used for the study of ozone recovery at a northern mid-latitude station
The coherence of stratospheric ozone time series retrieved from various observational records is investigated at Haute-Provence Observatory (OHPâ43.93° N, 5.71° E). The analysis is accomplished through the intercomparison of collocated ozone measurements of Light Detection and Ranging (lidar) with Solar Backscatter UltraViolet(/2) (SBUV(/2)), Stratospheric Aerosol and Gas Experiment II (SAGE~II), Halogen Occultation Experiment (HALOE), Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS) on Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS) and Aura and Global Ozone Monitoring by Occultation of Stars (GOMOS) satellite observations as well as with in situ ozonesondes and ground-based Umkehr measurements performed at OHP. A detailed statistical study of the relative differences of ozone observations over the whole stratosphere is performed to detect any specific drift in the data. On average, all instruments show their best agreement with lidar at 20â40 km, where deviations are within ±5 %. Discrepancies are somewhat higher below 20 and above 40 km. The agreement with SAGE II data is remarkable since average differences are within ±1 % at 17â41 km. In contrast, Umkehr data underestimate systematically the lidar measurements in the whole stratosphere with a near zero bias at 16â8 hPa (~30 km). Drifts are estimated using simple linear regression for the data sets analysed in this study, from the monthly averaged difference time series. The derived values are less than ±0.5 % yr&minus;1 in the 20â40 km altitude range and most drifts are not significant at the 2<i>Ï</i> level. We also discuss the possibilities of extending the SAGE II and HALOE data with the GOMOS and Aura MLS data in consideration with relative offsets and drifts since the combination of such data sets are likely to be used for the study of stratospheric ozone recovery in the future
Looking inside the black box : a theory-based process evaluation alongside a randomised controlled trial of printed educational materials (the Ontario printed educational message, OPEM) to improve referral and prescribing practices in primary care in Ontario, Canada
Background: Randomised controlled trials of implementation strategies tell us whether (or not) an intervention results in changes in professional behaviour but little about the causal mechanisms that produce any change. Theory-based process evaluations collect data on theoretical constructs alongside randomised trials to explore possible causal mechanisms and effect modifiers. This is similar to measuring intermediate endpoints in clinical trials to further understand the biological basis of any observed effects (for example, measuring lipid profiles alongside trials of lipid lowering drugs where the primary endpoint could be reduction in vascular related deaths). This study protocol describes a theory-based process evaluation alongside the Ontario Printed Educational Message (OPEM) trial. We hypothesize that the OPEM interventions are most likely to operate through changes in physicians' behavioural intentions due to improved attitudes or subjective norms with little or no change in perceived behavioural control. We will test this hypothesis using a well-validated social cognition model, the theory of planned behaviour (TPB) that incorporates these constructs. Methods/design: We will develop theory-based surveys using standard methods based upon the TPB for the second and third replications, and survey a subsample of Ontario family physicians from each arm of the trial two months before and six months after the dissemination of the index edition of informed, the evidence based newsletter used for the interventions. In the third replication, our study will converge with the "TRY-ME" protocol (a second study conducted alongside the OPEM trial), in which the content of educational messages was constructed using both standard methods and methods informed by psychological theory. We will modify Dillman's total design method to maximise response rates. Preliminary analyses will initially assess the internal reliability of the measures and use regression to explore the relationships between predictor and dependent variable (intention to advise diabetic patients to have annual retinopathy screening and to prescribe thiazide diuretics for first line treatment of uncomplicated hypertension). We will then compare groups using methods appropriate for comparing independent samples to determine whether there have been changes in the predicted constructs (attitudes, subjective norms, or intentions) across the study groups as hypothesised, and will assess the convergence between the process evaluation results and the main trial results. The OPEM trial and OPEM process evaluation are funded by the Canadian Institute of Health Research (CIHR). The OPEM process evaluation study was developed as part of the CIHR funded interdisciplinary capacity enhancement team KT-ICEBeRG.
