A simple technique for morphological measurement of cerebral arterial circle variations using public domain software (Osiris)

This article describes a straightforward method to measure the dimensions and identify morphological variations in the cerebral arterial circle using the general-purpose software program Osiris. This user-friendly and portable program displays, manipulates, and analyzes medical digital images, and it has the capability to determine morphometric properties of selected blood vessels (or other anatomical structures) in humans and animals. To ascertain morphometric variations in the cerebral arterial circle, 132 brains of recently deceased fetuses, infants, and adults were dissected. The dissection procedure was first digitized, and then the dimensions were measured with Osiris software. Measurements of each vessel's length and external diameters were used to identify and classify morphological variations in the cerebral arterial circle. The most commonly observed anatomical variations were uni- and bilateral hypoplasia of the posterior communicating artery. This study demonstrates that public domain software can be used to measure and classify cerebral arterial circle vessels. This method could be extended to examine other anatomical regions or to study other animals. Additionally, knowledge of variations within the circle could be applied clinically to enhance diagnostic and treatment specificity

Analysis of the impact of sex and age on the variation in the prevalence of antinuclear autoantibodies in Polish population: a nationwide observational, cross-sectional study

The detection of antinuclear autoantibody (ANA) is dependent on many factors and varies between the populations. The aim of the study was first to assess the prevalence of ANA in the Polish adult population depending on age, sex and the cutoff threshold used for the results obtained. Second, we estimated the occurrence of individual types of ANA-staining patterns. We tested 1731 patient samples using commercially available IIFA using two cutoff thresholds of 1:100 and 1:160. We found ANA in 260 participants (15.0%), but the percentage of positive results strongly depended on the cutoff level. For a cutoff threshold 1:100, the positive population was 19.5% and for the 1:160 cutoff threshold, it was 11.7%. The most prevalent ANA-staining pattern was AC-2 Dense Fine speckled (50%), followed by AC-21 Reticular/AMA (14.38%) ANA more common in women (72%); 64% of ANA-positive patients were over 50 years of age. ANA prevalence in the Polish population is at a level observed in other highly developed countries and is more prevalent in women and elderly individuals. To reduce the number of positive results released, we suggest that Polish laboratories should set 1:160 as the cutoff threshold

Assessment of chronic disease acceptance based on the example of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

Introduction. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is one of the most common diseases in the world. It is one of the most important social problems causing high mortality. The changes occurring in the lungs are characterized by not fully reversible airflow limitation through air passages. Treatment of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease consists in the prevention of the disease progression and reduction of the factors that cause the disease and its exacerbation. The quality of life in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is significantly affected by pulmonary rehabilitation, which is part of the therapy. Rehabilitation includes all measures aimed at improving the physical, mental and social health of the patient. Aim. The aim of the study is to assess the level of acceptance of chronic disease based on the example of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and to study the impact of factors forming a certain level of the disease acceptance. Material and Methods. The study was conducted at the Provincial Hospital in Plock. The study group consisted of 100 patients in the Department of Pulmonary Diseases and Tuberculosis. The research was carried out by means of an estimating method and a diagnostic survey. The Disease Acceptance Scale as well as the survey questionnaire were used as the research tools. Results. The studies have shown that patients accept the disease at the secondary level. The disease acceptance assessment are affected by health, psychological and social factors. Conclusions. 1. The acceptance level of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease does not depend significantly on gender, age, education, marital status and the way of residing. 2. The acceptance of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease depends significantly on the place of one鈥檚 residence. Patients residing in the city exhibit a higher level of acceptance of the disease compared with those living in the countryside. 3. The acceptance of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease depends significantly on comorbidities. Patients with concomitant diseases present a lower level of acceptance of the disease than patients without other diseases

Venous configurations of the anterior cubital region

Venous configurations of the anterior cubital region were examined on the sample of 203 country children. The occurence of vessel connections of Y -type was found in 91,9%. The variant had 10 modificatins (a-j). Modification of j-type which was observed in boys was the most ramified one. The relation between the kind of the work and the kind of the vessel configuration has been suggested

BODY BUILD OF POLYTECHNIC PUPILS AND TRACTOR DRIVERS. The weight-and-height Rohrer鈥檚 index was calculated for 102 pupils of the Polytechnic for Agiculture Mechanization and 160 tractor drivers employed in state-owned farms.* It was found out that with age the pupils developed a tendency towards an athletic body build, whereas the tractor drivers with the passage of years of work a tendency towards a pyknic body build

Skeletopy of the brachiocephalic trunk and the common carotid arteries in human fetuses

By means of anatomical and radiological methods and with help of the Computer Digital Image Analysis System the brachiocephalic trunk and the common carotid arteries in relation to the vertebral column were studied in 60 human fetuses. The vessels were found to be between the upper borders: of the third thoracic vertebra and the first cervical vertebra (Th3s-C1s). In the 6th month of the ontogenetic development the vessels descended by one vertebra and established their location in the next prenatal compartment (8-9) between the lower borders: of these same vertebra (Th 3i - C 1i ). We have counted the skeletopic age correlation coefficients of these vessels andfound the diminuation of their values. Sexual skeletopic dimorphisms have not been observed. These investigations have clinical implications
