    Improved alternating gradient transport and focusing of neutral molecules

    Polar molecules, in strong-field seeking states, can be transported and focused by an alternating sequence of electric field gradients that focus in one transverse direction while defocusing in the other. We show, by calculation and numerical simulation, how one may greatly improve the alternating gradient transport and focusing of molecules. We use a new optimized multipole lens design, a FODO-lattice beam transport line, and lenses to match the beam transport line to the beam source and to the final focus. We derive analytic expressions for the potentials, fields, and gradients that may be used to design these lenses. We describe a simple lens optimization procedure and derive the equations of motion for tracking molecules through a beam transport line. As an example, we model a straight beamline that transports a 560 m/s jet-source beam of methyl fluoride15 m from its source and focuses it to 2 mm diameter. We calculate the beam transport line acceptance and beam survival, for a beam with a velocity spread, and estimate the transmitted intensity for specified source conditions.     The Effects of Variable Parameters on the Behavior of Initial Wind Waves

    The generation mechanism of short wind waves is generally thought to be a viscous instability at the air-sea interface. The short, regular waves arising from a sudden wind on a still water surface have a dispersion relation which is characteristic of gravity-capillary waves. The effects of variable surface tension, viscosity and shear flow parameters on the behavior of these waves were studied. A numerical hydrodynamic stability analysis of a coupled laminar shear flow was accomplished by integrating a transformed version of the Orr-Sommerfeld equation, subject to the boundary conditions at a two-fluid interface. Unbounded growth problems usually encountered in a direct numerical integration of the Orr-Sommerfeld equation were avoided by the use of the compound matrix method, an efficient numerical technique based on a Riccati transformation. Phase speeds and growth rates of the waves generated by the instability mechanism were obtained for various surface tension and viscosity values as well as for different shear flow characteristics. The conjectured maximum growth rate/minimum phase speed relationship is shown to be valid only for specific values of surface tension. Changes in the viscosity of water are shown to have a large effect on the behavior of the waves, while changes in the viscosity of air do not. The role of the air velocity profile characteristics are shown to be subordinate to those of water-side parameters in the generation and subsequent growth of the initially appearing short waves. The disturbance is confined to a narrow region on either side of the interface which is of much smaller scale than free wave motion

    Long-term decline and geographical variation in the numbers of moulting Common Eiders Somateria mollissima in Shetland

    The 1977 survey was funded and led by the Nature Conservancy Council. Surveys from 1980 to 2019 were funded by the Sullom Voe Association and led by the Shetland Oil Terminal Environmental Advisory Group (SOTEAG).Capsule: Numbers of moulting Common Eiders Somateria mollissima counted in Shetland during surveys from 1977 to 2019 decreased from approximately 14,500 to an estimated 3600 individuals, a 75% population decline. Aims: To report results of extensive surveys of Eiders across Shetland during the annual complete moult period, review historical surveys, and evaluate long-term population changes and the possible underlying causes for change. Methods: Extensive areas of coastal Shetland were surveyed for Eiders during the annual moult period from July to September, every one to five years from 1977 to 2019. Spatial sampling was variable between surveys from 1977 to 1993 but more systematic and standardised during all surveys from 1996 to 2019. Overall population change, changes in numbers of birds within areas categorised as either exposed or sheltered coast, and change in the proportion of adult males to females/juveniles were assessed. Results: Surveys from 1977 to 1993 indicated a 55% decrease, from approximately 14,500–6500 individuals, and surveys from 1996 to 2019 showed a 45% decrease, from an estimated 6700–3600 individuals, indicating an overall population decrease of approximately 75% from 1977 to 2019. From 1996 to 2019, Eider numbers decreased in areas of exposed coast by approximately 90% but increased by at least 70% in the more sparsely populated sheltered areas, and the overall proportion of adult males to females/juveniles reduced by one-third. Conclusion: From 1977 to 2019, a substantial decline of approximately 75% occurred in the Shetland Eider population at the time of moult. Shetland Eiders are not S. m. mollissima but morphologically and genetically akin to S. m. faeroeensis, the Faroese subspecies, the rarest subspecies worldwide, so this decline is of high conservation concern. Causes of the decline largely remain unknown, but ecological datasets on Shetland Eiders are few and detailed studies, including remote tracking of individuals’ movements throughout the year, would be worthwhile.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe

    Curcumin-based photosensitization inactivates Aspergillus flavus and reduces aflatoxin B1 in maize kernels

    Different methods have been applied in controlling contamination of foods and feeds by the carcinogenic fungal toxin, aflatoxin, but nevertheless the problem remains pervasive in developing countries. Curcumin is a natural polyphenolic compound from the spice turmeric (Curcuma longa L.) that has been identified as an efficient photosensitiser for inactivation of Aspergillus flavus conidia. Curcumin mediated photoinactivation of A. flavus has revealed the potential of this technology to be an effective method for reducing population density of the aflatoxin-producing fungus in foods. This study demonstrates the influence of pH and temperature on efficiency of photoinactivation of the fungus and how treating spore-contaminated maize kernels affects aflatoxin production. The results show the efficiency of curcumin mediated photoinactivation of fungal conidia and hyphae were not affected by temperatures between 15 and 35 °C or pH range of 1.5–9.0. The production of aflatoxin B was significantly lower (p < 0.05), with an average of 82.4 μg/kg as compared to up to 305.9 μg/kg observed in untreated maize kept under similar conditions. The results of this study indicate that curcumin mediated photosensitization can potentially be applied under simple environmental conditions to achieve significant reduction of post-harvest contamination of aflatoxin B in maize

    Nonsurgical Transurethral Radiofrequency Collagen Denaturation: Results at Three Years after Treatment

    Objective. To assess treatment efficacy and quality of life in women with stress urinary incontinence 3 years after treatment with nonsurgical transurethral radiofrequency collagen denaturation. Methods. This prospective study included 139 women with stress urinary incontinence due to bladder outlet hypermobility. Radiofrequency collagen denaturation was performed using local anesthesia in an office setting. Assessments included incontinence quality of life (I-QOL) and urogenital distress inventory (UDI-6) instruments. Results. In total, 139 women were enrolled and 136 women were treated (mean age, 47 years). At 36 months, intent-to-treat analysis (n = 139) revealed significant improvements in quality of life. Mean I-QOL score improved 17 points from baseline (P = .0004), while mean UDI-6 score improved (decreased) 19 points (P = .0005). Conclusions. Transurethral collagen denaturation is a low-risk, office-based procedure that results in durable quality-of-life improvements in a significant proportion of women for as long as 3 years

    Mitochondrial function, mobility and lifespan are improved in Drosophila melanogaster by extracts of 9-cis-β-Carotene from Dunaliella salina

    Carotenoids are implicated in alleviating ageing and age-related diseases in humans. While data from different carotenoids are mixed in their outcomes, those for 9-cis-_-carotene indicate general positive effects, although basic data on its biological impact are limited. Here, we show that supplementation with 9-cis-_-carotene in ageing Drosophila melanogaster improved mitochondrial function in terms of ATP production and whole-body respiration and extended mean lifespan. It also resulted in improved mobility. These data provide a potential biological rational for the beneficial effects of dietary supplementation with 9-cis-_-carotene. These effects may be based on the maintenance of a sound mitochondrial function

Oceanography, (2022), https://doi.org/10.5670/oceanog.2022.205.The Processes driving Exchange At Cape Hatteras (PEACH) program seeks to better understand seawater exchanges between the continental shelf and the open ocean near Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. This location is where the Gulf Stream transitions from a boundary-trapped current to a free jet, and where robust along-shelf convergence brings cool, relatively fresh Middle Atlantic Bight and warm, salty South Atlantic Bight shelf waters together, forming an important and dynamic biogeographic boundary. The magnitude of this convergence implies large export of shelf water to the open ocean here. Background on the oceanography of the region provides motivation for the study and gives context for the measurements that were made. Science questions focus on the roles that wind forcing, Gulf Stream forcing, and lateral density gradients play in driving exchange. PEACH observational efforts include a variety of fixed and mobile observing platforms, and PEACH modeling included two different resolutions and data assimilation schemes.     Macro economy, stock market and oil prices: Do meaningful relationships exist among their cyclical fluctuations?

    This paper examines the relationship among consumer price index, industrial production, stock market and oil prices in Greece. Initially we use a unified statistical framework (cointegration and VECM) to study the data in levels. We then employ a multivariate VAR model to examine the relationship between the cyclical components of our series. The period of the study is from 1996:1 – 2008:6. Findings suggest that oil prices and the stock market exercise a positive effect on the Greek CPI, in the long run. Cyclical components analysis suggests that oil prices exercise significant negative influence to the stock market. In addition, oil prices are negatively influencing CPI, at a significant level. However, we find no effect of oil prices on industrial production and CPI. Finally, no relationship can be documented between the industrial production and stock market for the Greek market. The findings of this study are of a particular interest and importance to policy makers, financial managers, financial analysts and investors dealing with the Greek economy and the Greek stock market

    Multi-spectral kernel sorting to reduce aflatoxins and fumonisins in Kenyan maize

    Maize, a staple food in many African countries including Kenya, is often contaminated by toxic and carcinogenic fungal secondary metabolites such as aflatoxins and fumonisins. This study evaluated the potential use of a low-cost, multi-spectral sorter in identification and removal of aflatoxin- and fumonisin-contaminated single kernels from a bulk of mature maize kernels. The machine was calibrated by building a mathematical model relating reflectance at nine distinct wavelengths (470–1550\ua0nm) to mycotoxin levels of single kernels collected from small-scale maize traders in open-air markets and from inoculated maize field trials in Eastern Kenya. Due to the expected skewed distribution of mycotoxin contamination, visual assessment of putative risk factors such as discoloration, moldiness, breakage, and fluorescence under ultra-violet light (365\ua0nm), was used to enrich for mycotoxin-positive kernels used for calibration. Discriminant analysis calibration using both infrared and visible spectra achieved 77% sensitivity and 83% specificity to identify kernels with aflatoxin >10\ua0ng\ua0g and fumonisin >1000\ua0ng\ua0g, respectively (measured by ELISA or UHPLC). In subsequent sorting of 46 market maize samples previously tested for mycotoxins, 0–25% of sample mass was rejected from samples that previously tested toxin-positive and 0–1% was rejected for previously toxin-negative samples. In most cases where mycotoxins were detected in sorted maize streams, accepted maize had lower mycotoxin levels than the rejected maize (21/25 accepted maize streams had lower aflatoxin than rejected streams, 25/27 accepted maize streams had lower fumonisin than rejected streams).
