Biaxial fragmentation of thin silicon oxide coatings on poly(ethylene terephthalate)
Crack patterns of 53 nm and 103 nm thick silicon oxide coatings on poly(ethylene terephthalate) films are analyzed under equibiaxial stress loading, by means of a bulging cell mounted under an optical microscope with stepwise pressurization of film specimens. The biaxial stress and strain are modeled from classical elastic membrane equations, and an excellent agreement is obtained with a finite element method. In the large pressure range, the derivation of the biaxial strain from force equilibrium considerations are found to reproduce accurately the measured data up to 25% strain. The examination of the fragmentation process of the coating under increasing pressure levels reveals that the crack onset strain of the oxide coating is similar to that measured under uniaxial tension. The fragmentation of the coating under biaxial tension is also characterized by complex dynamic phenomena which image the peculiarities of the stress field, resulting in considerable broadening of the fragment size distribution. Hierarchical multi-scale models for mechanical response prediction of highly filled elastic–plastic and viscoplastic particulate composites
Though a vast amount of literature can be found on modelling particulate reinforced composites and suspensions, the treatment of such materials at very high volume fractions (>90%), typical of high performance energetic materials, remains a challenge. The latter is due to the very wide particle size distribution needed to reach such a high value of In order to meet this challenge, multiscale models that can treat the presence of particles at various scales are needed. This study presents a novel hierarchical multiscale method for predicting the effective properties of elasto-viscoplastic polymeric composites at high . Firstly, simulated microstructures with randomly packed spherical inclusions in a polymeric matrix were generated. Homogenised properties predicted using the finite element (FE) method were then iteratively passed in a hierarchical multi-scale manner as modified matrix properties until the desired filler was achieved. The validated hierarchical model was then applied to a real composite with microstructures reconstructed from image scan data, incorporating cohesive elements to predict debonding of the filler particles and subsequent catastrophic failure. The predicted behaviour was compared to data from uniaxial tensile tests. Our method is applicable to the prediction of mechanical behaviour of any highly filled composite with a non-linear matrix, arbitrary particle filler shape and a large particle size distribution, surpassing limitations of traditional analytical models and other published computational models
The Mid-Infrared Instrument for the James Webb Space Telescope, V: Predicted Performance of the MIRI Coronagraphs
The imaging channel on the Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) is equipped with
four coronagraphs that provide high contrast imaging capabilities for studying
faint point sources and extended emission that would otherwise be overwhelmed
by a bright point-source in its vicinity. Such bright sources might include
stars that are orbited by exoplanets and circumstellar material, mass-loss
envelopes around post-main-sequence stars, the near-nuclear environments in
active galaxies, and the host galaxies of distant quasars. This paper describes
the coronagraphic observing modes of MIRI, as well as performance estimates
based on measurements of the MIRI flight model during cryo-vacuum testing. A
brief outline of coronagraphic operations is also provided. Finally, simulated
MIRI coronagraphic observations of a few astronomical targets are presented for
illustration
Multiwavelength studies of the gas and dust disc of IRAS 04158+2805
We present a study of the circumstellar environment of IRAS 04158+2805 based
on multi-wavelength observations and models. Images in the optical and
near-infrared, a polarisation map in the optical, and mid-infrared spectra were
obtained with VLT-FORS1, CFHT-IR, and Spitzer-IRS. Additionally we used an
X-ray spectrum observed with Chandra. We interpret the observations in terms of
a central star surrounded by an axisymmetric circumstellar disc, but without an
envelope, to test the validity of this simple geometry. We estimate the
structural properties of the disc and its gas and dust content. We modelled the
dust disc with a 3D continuum radiative transfer code, MCFOST, based on a
Monte-Carlo method that provides synthetic scattered light images and
polarisation maps, as well as spectral energy distributions. We find that the
disc images and spectral energy distribution narrowly constrain many of the
disc model parameters, such as a total dust mass of 1.0-1.75x10^-4 sollar
masses and an inclination of 62-63 degrees. The maximum grain size required to
fit all available data is of the order of 1.6-2.8 microns although the upper
end of this range is loosely constrained. The observed optical polarisation map
is reproduced well by the same disc model, suggesting that the geometry we find
is adequate and the optical properties are representative of the visible dust
content. We compare the inferred dust column density to the gas column density
derived from the X-ray spectrum and find a gas-to-dust ratio along the line of
sight that is consistent with the ISM value. To our knowledge, this measurement
is the first to directly compare dust and gas column densities in a

The Utility of Physiological Measures in Assessing the Empathic Skills of Incarcerated Violent Offenders.
Since lack of empathy is an important indicator of violent behaviors, researchers need consistent and valid measures. This study evaluated the practical significance of a potential physiological correlate of empathy compared to a traditional self-report questionnaire in 18 male violent offenders and 21 general population controls. Empathy skills were assessed with the Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI) questionnaire. Heart-Rate Variability (HRV) was assessed with an electrocardiogram. The RMSSD (Root Mean Square of the Successive beat-to-beat Differences), an HRV index implicated in social cognition, was calculated. There were no group differences in IRI scores. However, RMSSD was lower in the offender group. Positive correlations between RMSSD and IRI subscales were found for controls only. We conclude that psychometric measures of empathy do not discriminate incarcerated violent offenders, and that the incorporation of psychophysiological measures, such as HRV, could be an avenue for forensic research on empathy to establish translatable evidence-based information
Adsorbing vs. nonadsorbing tracers for assessing pesticide transport in arable soils
The suitability of two different tracers to mimic the behavior of pesticides in agricultural soils and to evidence the potential for preferential flow was evaluated in outdoor lysimeter experiments. The herbicide atrazine [6‐chloro‐N‐ethyl‐N′‐(1‐methylethyl)‐1,3,5‐triazine‐2,4‐diamine] was used as a model compound. Two tracers were used: a nonadsorbing tracer (bromide) and a weakly adsorbing dye tracer (uranine). Two soils that are expected to show a different extent of macropore preferential flow were used: a well‐drained sandy‐loamy Cambisol (gravel soil) and a poorly drained loamy Cambisol (moraine soil). Conditions for preferential flow were promoted by applying heavy simulated rainfall shortly after pesticide application. In some of the experiments, preferential flow was also artificially simulated by injecting the solutes through a narrow tube below the root zone. With depth injection, preferential leaching of atrazine occurred shortly after application in both soil types, whereas with surface application, it occurred only in the moraine soil. Thereafter, atrazine transport was mainly through the porous soil matrix, although contributions of preferential flow were also observed. For all the application approaches and soil types, after 900 d, <3% of the applied amount of atrazine was recovered in the drainage water. Only uranine realistically illustrated the early atrazine breakthrough by transport through preferential flow. Uranine broke through during the first intense irrigation at the same time as atrazine. Bromide, however, appeared earlier than atrazine in some cases. The use of dye tracers as pesticide surrogates might assist in making sustainable decisions with respect to pesticide application timing relative to rainfall or soil potential for preferential flow
Signatures of warm carbon monoxide in protoplanetary discs observed with Herschel SPIRE
Molecular gas constitutes the dominant mass component of protoplanetary discs. To date, these sources have not been studied comprehensively at the longest far-infrared and shortest submillimetre wavelengths. This paper presents Herschel SPIRE FTS spectroscopic observations towards 18 protoplanetary discs, covering the entire 450-1540 GHz (666-195 μm) range at ν/Δν ≈ 400-1300. The spectra reveal clear detections of the dust continuum and, in six targets, a significant amount of spectral line emission primarily attributable to 12CO rotational lines. Other targets exhibit little to no detectable spectral lines. Low signal-to-noise detections also include signatures from 13CO, [C I] and HCN. For completeness, we present upper limits of non-detected lines in all targets, including low-energy transitions of H2O and CH+ molecules. The 10 12CO lines that fall within the SPIRE FTS bands trace energy levels of ˜50-500 K. Combined with lower and higher energy lines from the literature, we compare the CO rotational line energy distribution with detailed physical-chemical models, for sources where these are available and published. Our 13CO line detections in the disc around Herbig Be star HD 100546 exceed, by factors of ˜10-30, the values predicted by a model that matches a wealth of other observational constraints, including the SPIRE 12CO ladder. To explain the observed 12CO/13CO ratio, it may be necessary to consider the combined effects of optical depth and isotope selective (photo)chemical processes. Considering the full sample of 18 objects, we find that the strongest line emission is observed in discs around Herbig Ae/Be stars, although not all show line emission. In addition, two of the six T Tauri objects exhibit detectable 12CO lines in the SPIRE range
Dust amorphization in protoplanetary disks
High-energy irradiation of the circumstellar material might impact the
structure and the composition of a protoplanetary disk and hence the process of
planet formation. In this paper, we present a study on the possible influence
of the stellar irradiation, indicated by X-ray emission, on the crystalline
structure of the circumstellar dust. The dust crystallinity is measured for 42
class II T Tauri stars in the Taurus star-forming region using a decomposition
fit of the 10 micron silicate feature, measured with the Spitzer IRS
instrument. Since the sample includes objects with disks of various
evolutionary stages, we further confine the target selection, using the age of
the objects as a selection parameter. We correlate the X-ray luminosity and the
X-ray hardness of the central object with the crystalline mass fraction of the
circumstellar dust and find a significant anti-correlation for 20 objects
within an age range of approx. 1 to 4.5 Myr. We postulate that X-rays represent
the stellar activity and consequently the energetic ions of the stellar winds
which interact with the circumstellar disk. We show that the fluxes around 1 AU
and ion energies of the present solar wind are sufficient to amorphize the
upper layer of dust grains very efficiently, leading to an observable reduction
of the crystalline mass fraction of the circumstellar, sub-micron sized dust.
This effect could also erase other relations between crystallinity and
