Decision Costs and Welfare Effects of Democratic Voting Rules: An Experimental Analysis

    No full text
What impact do majority rule and unanimity rule have on welfare and decision costs? According to Buchanan and Tullock ([1962] 1999) the unanimity principle must be regarded as a democratic norm, because it guarantees Pareto-efficient welfare effects. We present experimental results from a public goods game, which demonstrate in contrast to this assumption that majority rule can produce greater welfare effects than unanimity rule. This result suggests a critical revision of theoretical approaches which narrow the legitimacy of majority rule in this respect

Análise de livros didáticos de biologia com foco na educação ambiental

The present work presents an analysis made in Didactic Books (LD) of Biology of High School (MS) used by teachers and students (of a public school) in a classroom with a look at the theme of Environmental Education (EA) And / or the relationship with the content addressed. Although the National Curricular Parameters (NCP) on Environment focus on EE with a transforming principle of environmental care, there are still difficulties among educators in relating the theme to the content of the curricular component. In this way, it is important that we study LD more, a sometimes guiding tool used by teachers in their teaching planning. In order to do this, a documentary research was done referring to some documents and Laws, as well as an analysis in three LD distributed to schools through the National Program of Didactic Book (PNLD) used by teachers and students of high school. To do so, we draw up a table for each LD highlighting the excerpts on the theme EA. The results obtained showed little insertion of the EA, which requires a problematization to integrate the specific contents in the LD, which need to be reviewed and discussed, such as the content: nutrition, respective to question about the reduction of the induced consumption of canned products and Artificially manufactured, for example.O presente trabalho apresenta uma análise feita em Livros Didáticos (LD) de Biologia do Ensino Médio (EM) utilizados pelos professores e alunos (de uma escola pública) em sala de aula com olhar para a temática da Educação Ambiental (EA) visto a inserção e/ou a relação com os conteúdos abordados.

Developmental expression and differentiation-related neuron-specific splicing of metastasis suppressor 1 (Mtss1) in normal and transformed cerebellar cells

Background: Mtss1 encodes an actin-binding protein, dysregulated in a variety of tumors, that interacts with sonic hedgehog/Gli signaling in epidermal cells. Given the prime importance of this pathway for cerebellar development and tumorigenesis, we assessed expression of Mtss1 in the developing murine cerebellum and human medulloblastoma specimens. Results: During development, Mtss1 is transiently expressed in granule cells, from the time point they cease to proliferate to their synaptic integration. It is also expressed by granule cell precursor-derived medulloblastomas. In the adult CNS, Mtss1 is found exclusively in cerebellar Purkinje cells. Neuronal differentiation is accompanied by a switch in Mtss1 splicing. Whereas immature granule cells express a Mtss1 variant observed also in peripheral tissues and comprising exon 12, this exon is replaced by a CNS-specific exon, 12a, in more mature granule cells and in adult Purkinje cells. Bioinformatic analysis of Mtss1 suggests that differential exon usage may affect interaction with Fyn and Src, two tyrosine kinases previously recognized as critical for cerebellar cell migration and histogenesis. Further, this approach led to the identification of two evolutionary conserved nuclear localization sequences. These overlap with the actin filament binding site of Mtss1, and one also harbors a potential PKA and PKC phosphorylation site. Conclusion: Both the pattern of expression and splicing of Mtss1 is developmentally regulated in the murine cerebellum. These findings are discussed with a view on the potential role of Mtss1 for cytoskeletal dynamics in developing and mature cerebellar neurons
