    An Improved Measure of Deaths due to COVID-19 in England and Wales

    We address the question of: 'how many deaths in England and Wales are due to COVID-19?' There are two approaches to measuring COVID deaths - 'COVID associated deaths' and 'excess deaths'. An excess deaths type framework is preferable, as there is substantial measurement error in COVID associated deaths, due to issues relating to the identification of deaths that are directly attributable to COVID-19. A limitation of the current excess deaths metric (a comparison of deaths to a 5 year average for the same week), is that it attributes the entirety of the variation in mortality to COVID-19. This likely means that the metric is overstated because there are a range of other drivers of mortality. We address this by estimating novel empirical Poisson models for all-cause deaths (in totality; by age category; for males; and females) that account for other drivers including the lockdown Government policy response. The models are novel because they include COVID identifier variables (which are a variation on a dummy variable). We use these identifiers to estimate weekly deviations in COVID deaths (about the mean weekly estimate pertaining to the COVID dummy variable in our baseline model). Results from two sets of identifiers indicate that, over the periods when our weekly estimates of total COVID deaths and the current excess deaths measure differ (week ending 17th or 24th April 2020 - week ending 8th May 2020), the former is considerably below the latter - on average per week 4670 deaths (54%) lower, or 4727 deaths (63%) lower, respectively

    Features of synchronization picture in the system with the limit cycle embedded in a three-dimensional phase space are considered. By the example of Ressler system and Dmitriev - Kislov generator under the action of a periodic sequence of delta - function it is shown, that synchronization picture significantly depends on the direction of pulse action.     Diffraction-Limited Imaging and Photometry of NGC 1068

    The nearby Seyfert 2 Galaxy NGC 1068 was observed with speckle imaging techniques in the near-infrared H-band (1.6 microns) at the Hale 200-inch Telescope and K-band (2.2 microns) at the 10 m Keck I Telescope. Images with diffraction limited or near-diffraction limited resolutions of 0.''05 - 0.''1 were obtained and used to search for structure in the nuclear region. Images of the nucleus of NGC 1068 reveal an extended region of emission which accounts for nearly 50% of the nuclear flux at K-band. This region extends 10 pc on either side of an unresolved point source nucleus which is at most, 0.''02 or 1.4 pc in size. Both the point source and the newly imaged extended emission are very red, with identical H-K colors corresponding to a color temperature of 800 K. While the point source is of a size to be consistent with grains in thermal equilibrium with the nuclear source, the extended emission is not. It must consist either of nuclear emission which has been reflected off an extended dusty disk or of small grains raised to transiently high temperatures by reflected UV photons.Comment: accepted to AJ, AAS LaTeX and epsfig, 22 pages incl. 5 ps figure

    A hybrid model for chaotic front dynamics: From semiconductors to water tanks

    We present a general method for studying front propagation in nonlinear systems with a global constraint in the language of hybrid tank models. The method is illustrated in the case of semiconductor superlattices, where the dynamics of the electron accumulation and depletion fronts shows complex spatio-temporal patterns, including chaos. We show that this behavior may be elegantly explained by a tank model, for which analytical results on the emergence of chaos are available. In particular, for the case of three tanks the bifurcation scenario is characterized by a modified version of the one-dimensional iterated tent-map.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Morphology of the 12-micron Seyfert Galaxies: II. Optical and Near-Infrared Image Atlas

    We present 263 optical and near-infrared (NIR) images for 42 Seyfert 1s and 48 Seyfert 2s, selected from the Extended 12-micron Galaxy Sample. Elliptically-averaged profiles are derived from the images, and isophotal radii and magnitudes are calculated from these. We also report virtual aperture photometry, that judging from comparison with previous work, is accurate to roughly 0.05mag in the optical, and 0.07mag in the NIR. Our B-band isophotal magnitude and radii, obtained from ellipse fitting, are in good agreement with those of RC3. When compared with the B band, V, I, J, and K isophotal diameters show that the colors in the outer regions of Seyferts are consistent with the colors of normal spirals. Differences in the integrated isophotal colors and comparison with a simple model show that the active nucleus+bulge is stronger and redder in the NIR than in the optical. Finally, roughly estimated Seyfert disk surface brightnesses are significantly brighter in B and K than those in normal spirals of similar morphological type.Comment: 17 pgs including figures; Table 2 is a separate file.     Collective dynamics of two-mode stochastic oscillators

    We study a system of two-mode stochastic oscillators coupled through their collective output. As a function of a relevant parameter four qualitatively distinct regimes of collective behavior are observed. In an extended region of the parameter space the periodicity of the collective output is enhanced by the considered coupling. This system can be used as a new model to describe synchronization-like phenomena in systems of units with two or more oscillation modes. The model can also explain how periodic dynamics can be generated by coupling largely stochastic units. Similar systems could be responsible for the emergence of rhythmic behavior in complex biological or sociological systems.Comment: 4 pages, RevTex, 5 figure

    Interstellar Extinction and Long-Period Variables in the Galactic Center

    We use the Spitzer IRAC catalogue of the Galactic Center (GC) point sources (Ramirez et al. 2008) and combine it with new isochrones (Marigo et al. 2008) to derive extinctions based on photometry of red giants and asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars. This new extinction map extends to much higher values of Av than previoulsy available. Our new extinction map of the GC region covers 2.0 x 1.4 degree (280 x 200 pc at a distance of 8 kpc). We apply it to deredden the LPVs found by Glass et al. (2001) near the GC. We make period-magnitude diagrams and compare them to those from other regions of different metallicity. The Glass-LPVs follow well-defined period-luminosity relations (PL) in the IRAC filter bands at 3.6, 4.5, 5.8, and 8.0 micron. The period-luminosity relations are similar to those in the Large Magellanic Cloud, suggesting that the PL relation in the IRAC bands is universal. We use ISOGAL data to derive mass-loss rates and find for the Glass-LPV sample some correlation between mass-loss and pulsation period, as expected theoretically.The GC has an excess of high luminosity and long period LPVs compared to the Bulge, which supports previous suggestions that it contains a younger stellar population.Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysic
