From Taub Numbers to the Bondi Mass
Taub numbers are studied on asymptotically flat backgrounds with Killing
symmetries. When the field equations are solved for a background spacetime and
higher order functional derivatives (higher order variational derivatives of
the Hilbert Lagrangean) are solved for perturbations from the background, such
perturbed space-times admit zeroth, first, and second order Taub numbers.
Zeroth order Taub numbers are Komar constants (upto numerical factors) or
Penrose-Goldberg constants of the background. For a Killing symmetry of the
background, first order Taub numbers give the contribution of the linearized
perturbation to the associated backgound quantity, such as the perturbing mass.
Second order Taub numbers give the contribution of second order perturbations
to the background quantity. The Bondi mass is a sum of first and second order

ISOGAL Survey of Baade's Windows in the Mid-infrared
The ISOGAL mid-infrared survey of areas close to the Galactic Plane aims to
determine their stellar content and its possible bearing on the history of the
Galaxy. The NGC6522 and Sgr I Baade's Windows of low obscuration towards the
inner parts of the Bulge represent ideal places in which to calibrate and
understand the ISOGAL colour-magnitude diagrams.
The survey observations were made with the ISOCAM instrument of the ISO
satellite. The filter bands chosen were LW2(~7 microns) and LW3(~15 microns).
The results presented here show that most of the detected objects are late
M-type giants on the AGB, with a cut-off for those earlier than M3-M4. The most
luminous members of these two Bulge fields at 7 microns are the Mira variables.
However, it is evident that they represent the end of a sequence of increasing
15 micron dust emission which commences with M giants of earlier sub-type.
In observations of late-type giants the ISOCAM 15 micron band is mainly
sensitive to the cool silicate or aluminate dust shells which overwhelm the
photospheric emission. However, in ordinary M-giant stars, the 7 micron band is
not strongly affected by dust emission and may be influenced instead by
absorption. The nu2 band of water at 6.25 microns and the SiO fundamental at
7.9 microns are likely contribitors to this effect.
A group of late M stars has been found which vary little or not at all but
have infrared colours typical of well-developed dust shells. Their luminosities
are similar to those of 200-300 day Miras but they have slightly redder
[7]-[15] colours which form an extension of the ordinary M giant sequence.
The Mira dust shells show a mid-infrared [7]-[15] colour-period relation. ca

Projectile Excitations in Reactions
It has recently been proven from measurements of the spin-transfer
coefficients and that there is a small but non-vanishing
component , in the inclusive reaction
cross section . It is shown that the dominant part of the measured
can be explained in terms of the projectile excitation
mechanism. An estimate is further made of contributions to from
s-wave rescattering process. It is found that s-wave rescattering contribution
is much smaller than the contribution coming from projectile
excitation mechanism. The addition of s-wave rescattering contribution to the

Ultralow noise performance of an 8.4-GHz maser-feedhorn system
A total system noise temperature of 6.6 K was demonstrated with an 8.4-GHz traveling wave maser and feedhorn operating in a cryogenic environment. Both the maser and feedhorn were inserted in the helium cryostat, with the maser operating in the 1.6-K liquid bath and the feedhorn cooled in the helium gas, with a temperature gradient along the horn ranging from the liquid bath temperature at its lower end to room temperature at its top. The ruby maser exhibited 43 dB of gain with a bandwidth of 76 MHz(-3 dB) centered at 8400 MHz. Discussions of the maser, cooled feedhorn, and cryostat designs are presented along with a discussion of the noise temperature measurements
Sequencing of ore columns for planning of large underground mines

Block caving is an underground mining technique which extracts ore from the base, rather than from the top, of typically massive deposits. Mining infrastructure is developed below the deposit before extraction commences. A network of tunnels provides access to a collection of drawpoints from which ore is mucked and hauled. With large deposits, not all drawpoints are developed simultaneously and the opening of drawpoints is sequenced to facilitate orderly extraction of ore columns above drawpoints. Sequencing fixes the initiation point for the entire block cave, or a part of it, as well as identifying the direction of cave advancement. The sequence of opening drawpoints influences the mine economics and is an integral aspect of planning a block cave mine. This paper discusses the optimisation of sequencing based on the net present value associated with extraction over the life-of-mine. It is shown that the maximum attainable net present value is obtained by a sequence in which ore columns are ranked in descending order of value. If significant variation of grade is present inside columns, an iterative procedure is given which corrects the sequence which yields the maximum net present value. The sequence with maximum net present value may not be practical or attractive from a caving perspective. Systematic design of sequences which permit orderly development of a block cave is discussed. To provide context, the net present value obtained from these feasible sequences is compared with the maximum attainable net present value. It is shown that the best feasible sequences in terms of net present value are preferentially initiated in zones with columns of high-grade ore.Rio Tinto Technical Services Lt
Reactions to extreme events: moving threshold model
In spite of precautions to avoid the harmful effects of extreme events, we
experience recurrently phenomena that overcome the preventive barriers. These
barriers usually increase drastically right after the occurrence of such
extreme events, but steadily decay in their absence. In this paper we consider
a simple model that mimics the evolution of the protection barriers to study
the efficiency of the system's reaction to extreme events and how it changes
our perception of the sequence of extreme events itself. We obtain that the
usual method of fighting extreme events introduces a periodicity in their
occurrence and is generally less efficient than the use of a constant barrier.
On the other hand, it shows a good adaptation to the presence of slow

Schwarzschild Atmospheric Processes: A Classical Path to the Quantum

string atmosphere. These processes suggest relationships between macroscopic
