    We report on experimental observation of localized structures in two mutually coupled broad-areahttp://hal.archives-ouvertes.fr/images/calendar.gif semiconductor resonators. These structures coexist with a dark homogeneous background and they have the same properties as cavity solitons without requiring the presence of a driving beam into the system. They can be switched individually on and off by means of a local addressing beam

    Preliminary design and analyses of a versatile telescope for Spacelab missions are presented. The system is an all-reflective Korsch three-mirror telescope with excellent performance characteristics over a wide field and a broad spectral range, making it particularly suited for ultraviolet observations. The system concept is evolved around the utilization of existing hardware and designs which were developed for other astronomy space projects

    An all-optical delay line based on the lateral drift of cavity solitons in semiconductor microresonators is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The functionalities of the device proposed as well as its performance is analyzed and compared with recent alternative methods based on the decrease of group velocity in the vicinity of resonances. We show that the current limitations can be overcome using broader devices with tailored material responses

Our main results bound the index of this subgroup: we conjecture that, if G has degree n and is not a Frobenius group, then |G:D(G)|≤ √n-1; we prove this except when G is a primitive affine group. For affine groups, we translate our conjecture into an equivalent form regarding |H:R(H)|, where H is a linear group on a finite vector space and R(H) is the subgroup of H generated by elements having eigenvalue 1. If G is a Frobenius group, then D(G) is the Frobenius kernel, and so G/D(G) is isomorphic to a Frobenius complement. We give some examples where D(G) ≠ G, and examine the group-theoretic structure of G/D(G); in particular, we construct groups G in which G/D(G) is not a Frobenius complement.PostprintPeer reviewe

    Spatio-temporal dynamics in vertical cavity surface emitting lasers excited by fast electrical pulses

    Includes bibliographical references (pages 320-321).We have measured the time average spatial intensity distribution and the spatio-temporal evolution of the spectrally resolved radiation emitted from broad-area vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSEL) when pumped by a fast current pulse. We show that an intrinsic symmetry break exists due to geometrical asymmetry of the device structure and that the frequency separation between different modes allows the evaluation of the asymmetry factor. The space-time behavior shows the appearance of higher-order modes coexisting or alternating in time. The dynamical behavior shows a chirping infrequency

    Copyright @ 2011 Ballabio et al.Leukaemia is often associated with genetic alterations such as translocations, amplifications and deletions, and recurrent chromosome abnormalities are used as markers of diagnostic and prognostic relevance. However, a proportion of acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) cases have an apparently normal karyotype despite comprehensive cytogenetic analysis. Based on conventional cytogenetic analysis of banded chromosomes, we selected a series of 23 paediatric patients with acute myeloid leukaemia and performed whole genome array comparative genome hybridization (aCGH) using DNA samples derived from the same patients. Imbalances involving large chromosomal regions or entire chromosomes were detected by aCGH in seven of the patients studied. Results were validated by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) to both interphase nuclei and metaphase chromosomes using appropriate bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) probes. The majority of these copy number alterations (CNAs) were confirmed by FISH and found to localize to the interphase rather than metaphase nuclei. Furthermore, the proliferative states of the cells analyzed by FISH were tested by immunofluorescence using an antibody against the proliferation marker pKi67. Interestingly, these experiments showed that, in the vast majority of cases, the changes appeared to be confined to interphase nuclei in a non-proliferative status.This work was supported by a grant from Leukaemia Research UK (grant no. 0253).     Temporal dynamics of semiconductor lasers with optical feedback

    We measure the temporal evolution of the intensity of an edge emitting semiconductor laser with delayed optical feedback for time spans ranging from 4.5 to 65 ns with a time resolution from 16 to 230 ps, respectively. Spectrally resolved streak camera measurements show that the fast pulsing of the total intensity is a consequence of the time delay and multimode operation of the laser.
