Lightweight Recoverable Foundations on Suitable Ground

    Get PDF
One of the greatest challenges to be faced in the fight against climate change in the construction sector is the fact that (non-traditional) conventional solutions are routinely accepted despite their high environmental impact. In particular, reinforced or mass concrete foundations are used at almost all sites, but they require a large amount of material, involve high emissions (some toxic), are extremely heavy and cannot be recovered. It is surprising to observe that most recent constructions in which the environment is taken into account use such foundations. This paper presents the results of the research carried out on lightweight recoverable foundation solutions. The aim is to dramatically reduce the amount of material and allow the foundations to be deconstructed and recycled along with the rest of the building, leaving the land clear for reuse.Postprint (published version

Nanomaterials in the European Union [the quest for a regulatory regime]

Probing the immune responses to nanoparticles across environmental species. A perspective of the EU Horizon 2020 project PANDORA

    Get PDF
Understanding how engineered nanomaterials affect immune responses of living organisms requires a strong collaborative effort between immunologists, toxicologists, ecologists, physiologists, inorganic chemists, nanomaterial scientists and experts in law and risk management. This perspective aims to provide a new viewpoint on the interaction between engineered nanomaterials and the immune defensive systems across living species, gained within the EU Horizon 2020 project PANDORA. We consider the effects of nanoparticle exposure on immune functions in plants, marine and terrestrial invertebrates and their relation to the current state of knowledge for vertebrates (in particular humans). These studies can shed light on the broader perspective of defensive and homeostatic mechanisms (immunity, inflammation, stress responses, microbiota, stem cell differentiation) suggesting ways to: i) perform a comparative analysis of the nanoparticle impact on immunity across model organisms; ii) inspire best practices in experimental methodologies for nanosafety/nanotoxicity studies; iii) regroup and harmonise fragmented research activities; iv) improve knowledge transfer strategies and nano-security; v) propose innovative tools and realistic solutions, thereby helping in identifying future research needs and tackling their challenges

+34917748000; [email protected]

Prefabricated foundations for 3D modular housing

Tridimensional prefabrication of housing has been the object of much literature and few realizations. Finally, enough buildings have been constructed that they can be analysed on site in order to confirm or deny the expectations drawn from integral or nearly integral prefabrication. As we have observed their foundations, it was surprising to find that many or most of their foundations were constructed in si tu, even though prefabricated solutions exist in the industry. This article presents available solutions for prefabricated foundations, it critically describes the foundations of 30 modular housing recently constructed in Catalonia, and it analyses the advisability (or non-advisability) of industrializing the foundations of this type of building.Postprint (published version
