Volumetric brachytherapy treatments implementation for cervical cancer in a public hospital in southwestern Colombia, 2022
The document has two sections that leave an impact on the study: 1) Quality control of the brachytherapy equipment and 2) Dosimetric analysis between two types of planning: a prescription technique to points A and another with a prescription to the target clinical volume. CTV is contoured by the radiation oncologist's doctor.
Using remote afterloading equipment BRAVOS, different tests were carried out to comply with the HDR security system before starting treatment, the tests of the dosimetric set, and for each source change, the reference rate of Kerma in the air. In order to carry out the dosimetric analysis, a comparison was made between the planning parameters with prescription at points A with the volumetric planning parameters and additionally, a cross-comparison was made, which means that the volumetric planning parameters were evaluated in the planning of points A to analyze the differences in dose.
The results showed compliance with the quality control of the BRAVOS team and also shows the dosimetric differences between the two types of planning.MaestríaMagíster en Física MédicaRadioterapi
Infrared and UV-Visible spectroscopy analysis of entire canine blood macromolecules
Spectroscopy techniques have been used to provide information. In order to evaluate changes on the chemical components in biological samples like blood tissue, this techniques can be used as an important clinical tool for in vivo diagnosis, where spectral peaks can be related such as biological markers. In the present study, we present canine blood samples analysis, methodology and protocol using non-invasive optical techniques like Infrared and UV-Visible spectroscopy for monitoring and identification of possible diseases. As a case study canine blood tissue samples from three patients were obtained on preprandial and postprandial state and analyzed under power conditions that do not cause any modification. On the other hand, in order to study how nanostructures enhance the signal tissue, we synthesized silver nanoparticles by two methods: synthesis microwave-assisted and Creighton synthesis method that was added to blood samples. The software tool Origin was used to determinate representative peaks in each spectrum. Evaluating areas under the curve and radio analysis were realized considering that absorption bands represent a group of macromolecules. The results show that methodologies used are viable for blood macromolecules tissue evaluation due to differences presented. In general, we discuss canine liver damage diagnosis possibility based on results obtained and literature reports.

Vection change exacerbates simulator sickness in virtual environments
The optic flow patterns generated by virtual reality (VR) systems typically produce visually induced experiences of self-motion (vection). While this vection can enhance presence in VR, it is often accompanied by a variant of motion sickness called simulator sickness (SS). However, not all vection experiences are the same. In terms of perceived heading and/or speed, visually simulated self-motion can be either steady or changing. It was hypothesized that changing vection would lead to more SS. Participants viewed an optic flow pattern that either steadily expanded or alternately expanded and contracted. In one experiment, SS was measured pretreatment and after 5 min of viewing using the Simulator Sickness Questionnaire. In a second experiment employing the same stimuli, vection onset and magnitude were measured using a computer-interfaced slide indicator. The steadily expandingflow pattern, compared to the expanding and contracting pattern, led to: 1) significantly less SS, 2) lower subscores for nausea, oculomotor, and disorientation symptoms, 3) more overall vection magnitude, and 4) less changing vection. Collectively, these results suggest that changing vection exacerbate SS
EVALUACIÓN DEL EFECTO LARVICIDA DEL EXTRACTO ETANÓLICO DE Syzygium aromaticum (CLAVO DE OLOR) SOBRE LARVAS DE CUARTO ESTADIO DE Aedes aegypti EN CONDICIONES DE LABORATORIO.
Considering the research of any alternative solution that doesn't affect the environment
and at the same time control the reproduction of the Aedes aegypti mosquito having on
mind the responsibility on the transmission of diseases that attack big part of the
population from all around the world as it is the dengue, yellow fever, and chikungunya
fever, we developed under laboratory conditions this project evaluating the larvicidal effect
of the Syzygium aromaticum (clove) as a biological control over the larvae of the IV vector
stage of aedes aegypti.
In the present investigation was performed bioassays with live larvae subjected to six
treatments with serial concentrations from 100 ppm to 600 ppm of extract of Syzygium
aromaticum (clove) with four different repetitions and a control group for each treatment. In
each bioassay with the different concentrations They were used 25 larvae fourth stage per
repiclate, making observations to assess their toxic effect starting from 0 hours increased
to 2.12, 24, 36 and 48 hours.
The results show a satisfactory efficiency of mortality in the treatments , considering that at
the end of the same there reaches a cumulative mortality of 100% within 48 hours of
exposure to the extract with a concentration of 400 ppm which it is really low compared to
other studies made .
It is concluded that the extract of Syzygium aromaticum when is used as a larvicide is very
efficient ; whereby there is the likelihood that being studied in field show positive results ,
achieving to control mosquito breeding Aedes aegypti reducing cases of people infected
with the dengue virus and chikungunya
Life on the planet since its origins has been developed by the diversity of interactions, these being fundamental for the maintenance and functioning of ecosystems; however, the interactions have been fractured by different anthropocentric actions such as changes in land use, deforestation, cattle ranching and the increase of monocultures in large areas.
In coherence with the above, we investigate the plant-hummingbird interactions that take place in three farms in the village of Costa Rica (La Belleza-Santander), in order to enable the understanding of the importance of interactions in the care and valuation of biodiversity, through a didactic material (board game) focused on hummingbird plant interactions with children from the village of Costa Rica from the perspective of education for the conservation of biodiversity.

Effect of fungal colonization on mechanical performance of cork
The industrialization of traditional processes relies on the scientific ability to understand the empirical evidence associated with
traditional knowledge. Cork manufacturing includes one operation known as stabilization, where humid cork slabs are extensively
colonized by fungi. The implications of fungal growth on the chemical quality of cork through the analysis of putative fungal metabolites
have already been investigated. However, the effect of fungal growth on the mechanical properties of cork remains unexplored. This
study investigated the effect of cork colonization on the integrity of the cork cell walls and their mechanical performance. Fungal
colonization of cork by Chrysonilia sitophila, Mucor plumbeus Penicillium glabrum, P. olsonii, and Trichoderma longibrachiatum was
investigated by microscopy. Growth occurred primarily on the surface of the cork pieces, but mycelium extended deeper into the cork
layers, mostly via lenticular channels and by hyphal penetration of the cork cell wall.
In this first report on cork decay in which specific correlation between fungal colonization and mechanical proprieties of the cork has
been investigated, all colonizing fungi except C. sitophila, reduced cork strength, markedly altering its viscoelastic behaviour and reducing its Young’s modulus.IBET, ITQB,EVN-INIA,IGC, IST,CEF-ISA, Amorim and Irmaos (Sta. Maria de Lamas, Portugal

Su salud a la mano (your health at hand): patient perceptions about a bilingual patient portal in the Los Angeles safety net.
ObjectivesDriven by beneficial patient-centered outcomes associated with patient portal use and the Affordable Care Act, portal implementation has expanded into safety nets-health systems that offer access to care to a large share of uninsured, Medicaid, and other vulnerable populations. However, little attention has been paid to the factors that affect portal accessibility by the vulnerable patients served by these health systems-including those who are limited English proficient (LEP).Materials and methodsThe Los Angeles County Department of Health Services (LAC DHS), the second-largest safety net system in the nation, launched its first patient portal, and one of the few bilingual English-Spanish interfaces in existence, in March of 2015. To explore portal awareness and perceptions, we conducted focus groups with LAC DHS patients, in English and Spanish (LEP). The Technology Acceptance Model was used to guide thematic analysis of focus group data.ResultsOf the 46 participants, 37 were patients and 9 were caretakers; 23 were English-speaking and 23 Spanish-speaking LEP. All patients had diabetes or hypertension. Over half had an annual household income <$10 000, yet 78% of English-speaking and 65% of Spanish-speaking LEP participants reported at-home Internet access. Participants' discussion centered around 3 major thematic narratives: (1) participants' awareness or attitudes about the LAC DHS portal; (2) role of culture, language, or community with regard to portal accessibility and utility; and (3) perceived needs for successful portal implementation.ConclusionsSafety net participants identified concrete benefits to the portal and emphasized the need for portal engagement that offered accessible education, support, and resources in clinical and community settings. The portal offers an additional opportunity to engage the patient and family with trusted and validated health information, and should be further developed in this capacity. This study provides a better understanding of preferred improvements of patient portal engagement that guide broader health technology efforts to address electronic health disparities

Inadequate management of anthelmintic resistance: a real-world case in a cattle commercial farm
Routine Faecal Egg Count Reduction Tests (FECRT) in a cattle commercial farm shows the effect of an inadequate management in the introduction of gastrointestinal nematodes resistant to different macrocyclic lactones (ivermectin-IVM-, moxidectin-MXD-, eprinomectin-EPR-, abamectin-ABA- and doramectin-DRM-). The "case-study" farm had been a cow-calf system for many years in the past, with low (1-2) anthelmintic treatments each year. However, it changed its productive activity to grazing cattle fattening in 2015, based in the introduction of steers from different farms, which are treated at arrival with IVM to prevent sarcoptic mange. In 2015, the efficacy (calculated by FECRT) against Haemonchus spp. was 42% (IVM) and 97% (MXD), while the efficacy against Cooperia spp. was 78% (IVM) and 98% (MXD). The presence of resistance to IVM was evident, while MXD maintain highly levels of efficacy. The next year, the efficacy against Haemonchus spp. dropped to 0% (IVMsc), 72% (MXD), 28% (EPR), 7% (ABA), 0% (DRM) and 5% (IVMoral), while the efficacy against Cooperia spp. was varied: 0% (IVM), 97% (MXD), 100% (EPR), 0% (ABA), 0% (DRM) and 0% (IVMoral). The efficacy against Ostertagia spp. was 100% for all treatments. The drastic decline in the efficacy of IVM and the very low efficacies obtained for all macrocyclic lactones treatments in 2016 (even for MXD and IVMoral) could be explained by some inadequate management measures: the selection of resistant population by the IVM treatment used as preventive of sarcoptic mange at the arrival of animals to the farm (although it was only one treatment), and the lack of quarantine procedures to avoid the introduction of parasite strains highly-resistant to macrocyclic lactones.Fil: Cantón, Candela.
