FONTES 71 präsentiert eine Volltext-Ausgabe der "Nota di diversi Gran' Principi, et Signori che hanno scritto in diversi tempi a messer Giorgio Vasari (…)" von Giorgio Vasari il Giovane (1562-1625), einem Neffen von Giorgio Vasari. Die Handschrift befindet sich am Ende des Codex Riccardiana 2354 (Biblioteca Riccardiana, Florenz). Die "Nota" wirft ein neues Licht auf den ursprünglichen Umfang des literarischen Nachlasses von Giorgio Vasari (1511-1574). Insbesondere liefert sie Rückschlüsse auf Verluste in der Briefsammlung und auf die Identität von Briefpartnern, deren Briefe an Vasari heute verschollen sind

A Mathematical model to guide Genetic Engineering of Photosynthetic Metabolism

open5noThe optimization of algae biomass productivity in industrial cultivation systems requires genetic improvement of wild type strains isolated from nature. One of the main factors affecting algae productivity is their efficiency in converting light into chemical energy and this has been a major target of recent genetic efforts. However, photosynthetic productivity in algae cultures depends on many environmental parameters, making the identification of advantageous genotypes complex and the achievement of concrete improvements slow. In this work, we developed a mathematical model to describe the key factors influencing algae photosynthetic productivity in a photobioreactor, using experimental measurements for the WT strain of Nannochloropsis gaditana. The model was then exploited to predict the effect of potential genetic modifications on algae performances in an industrial context, showing the ability to predict the productivity of mutants with specific photosynthetic phenotypes. EphA2 is a functional receptor for the growth factor progranulin.

Although the growth factor progranulin was discovered more than two decades ago, the functional receptor remains elusive. Here, we discovered that EphA2, a member of the large family of Ephrin receptor tyrosine kinases, is a functional signaling receptor for progranulin. Recombinant progranulin bound with high affinity to EphA2 in both solid phase and solution. Interaction of progranulin with EphA2 caused prolonged activation of the receptor, downstream stimulation of mitogen-activated protein kinase and Akt, and promotion of capillary morphogenesis. Furthermore, we found an autoregulatory mechanism of progranulin whereby a feed-forward loop occurred in an EphA2-dependent manner that was independent of the endocytic receptor sortilin. The discovery of a functional signaling receptor for progranulin offers a new avenue for understanding the underlying mode of action of progranulin in cancer progression, tumor angiogenesis, and perhaps neurodegenerative diseases

Financial intermediation and equity investment with costly monitoring

This paper studies the efficiency of equilibria in a productive OLG economy where the process of financial intermediation is characterized by costly state verification. Both competitive equilibria and Constrained Pareto Optimal allocations are characterized.
