    Biomass furnace for externally fired gas turbine: Development and validation of the numerical model

    Externally-fired gas turbines (EFGT) are currently being investigated for co-generation from biomass, because of their ability to deal with low-grade fuels without the complexity of gasification. Main drawbacks of the technology are related to the high thermal stresses experienced by the heat exchanger. The present work proposes a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis of a grate-fired furnace installed in a EFGT cycle, with the purpose to provide a tool for detecting the most critical regions in the furnace. The model is complemented with a process simulation of the entire EFGT cycle. Different approaches for treating the fuel bed and their impact on the CFD analysis are discussed and validated through the availability of in-flame measurements of temperature and chemical species. Predictions indicate the need for a detailed fluid dynamic characterization of the grate region, which was found to largely impact the furnace flow and thermo-chemical fields

    Physical Activity and Exercise Addiction During the Covid-19 Pandemic in Italy

Caught by the fear of getting sick, some individuals have adopted behaviors which favored the development of exercise addiction (EA). Our aim was to evaluate physical activity habits and the risk of EA in the general Italian population during phase 1 of the lockdown. The role of appearance anxiety (AA), self-compassion, and use of performance and image enhancing drugs (PIEDs) as predictors of EA development were investigated. A comparison between physically active subjects with the inactive ones was also included. Between April and May 2020, an online survey was conducted across Italy. Nine hundred thirty-six answers were collected. The rate of EA in the physically active sample (782 subjects) was 4.1%. The physically active group showed higher SCS scores and a greater use of PIEDs. Of the physically active participants, 84.2% reported variations in their fitness routine. Perceived benefit of exercising resulted significantly higher in those with EA. Subjects with EA reported stronger motivation in engaging in physical activity as for “physical wellness,” “psychological well-being,” and “sexual attractiveness and confidence in relationship.” A higher level of AA, a lower level of self-compassion, and a higher perceived benefit of exercising during lockdown were all significant predictors for the presence of EA. Our findings suggest that the fear of getting sick from Covid-19, combined with radical changes in the lifestyles induced by the lockdown and individual personological characteristics, can favor the development of EA and related phenomena in the general population.Peer reviewedFinal Published versio

In this study, we examined the relationship between mental health and addictive behaviors, such as excessive exercise and the use of image and performance enhancing drugs (IPEDs) across 12 sport disciplines. Materials and methods: A large cross-sectional sample of the adult population (N = 2,295) was surveyed. The mean age was 33.09 (SD = 11.40). The number of male participants was 668 (30.0%). The use of IPEDs was assessed in conjunction with psychometric measures such as the Exercise Addiction Inventory (EAI) and the Appearance Anxiety Inventory (AAI). The participants were grouped into activity group (AG) and non-activity group (NAG) according to the presence or absence of their exercise habits. The results were compared between these groups, as well as across sport disciplines, while taking into account the relationship between different psychological measures and IPEDs consumption. Results: The frequency of IPEDs use was higher among AG (34.6%) than NAG (14.6%), although AG participants reported less history of addictions (7.1%) than NAG (11.8%). The logistic regression analysis revealed that scores equal to or above cutoff points, in both the EAI and AAI, predicted the IPEDs use. Regarding the differences across the various sport disciplines, those who were involved in practicing Weight Lifting and Cross Fit were found to be more at risk of excessive exercising and more inclined to use a wide range of IPEDs. Conclusions: Although exercise could help to increase well-being and prevent addictions during the COVID-19 pandemic, our results show that those in the AG are particularly vulnerable to excessive IPEDs use. Sport disciplines associated with higher EAI and AAI scores have also shown a higher tendency to excessive IPEDs use. Furthermore, the factor of having above the cutoff scores in EAI or AAI in each sport could indicate larger IPEDs consumption regardless of the discipline. In light of the current findings, it is necessary to better define the “non-excessive” levels of exercise in various sport disciplines and an adequate intake of IPEDs to ensure the safety and well-being of people during a pandemic.Peer reviewe

    Competence Centre ICDI per Open Science, FAIR, ed EOSC - Mission, Strategia e piano d'azione

    This document presents the mission and strategy of the Italian Competence Centre on Open Science, FAIR, and EOSC. The Competence Centre is an initiative born within the Italian Computing and Data Infrastructure (ICDI), a forum created by representatives of major Italian Research Infrastructures and e-Infrastructures, with the aim of promoting sinergies at the national level, and optimising the Italian participation to European and global challenges in this field, including the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC), the European Data Infrastructure (EDI) and HPC. This working paper depicts the mission and objectives of the ICDI Competence Centre, a network of experts with various skills and competences that are supporting the national stakeholders on topics related to Open Science, FAIR principles application and participation to the EOSC. The different actors and roles are described in the document as well as the activities and services offered, and the added value each stakeholder can find the in Competence Centre. The tools and services provided, in particular the concept for the portal, though which the Centre will connect to the national landscape and users, are also presented

    An X-ray absorption structural study has been carried out on three N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) complexes of group 11 metals (Ag, Au), which were previously shown to possess promising anticancer properties. Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS) data concerning the Au complex, besides confirming the structure already available by crystallography, allowed the comparison between the crystalline and the amorphous state of the same compound. The EXAFS study conducted on the most biologically active complex, {[ImB]2AgCl}, revealed the occurrence of an unusual coordination geometry, where two ligand molecules and one chlorine atom interact with the Ag core to form a three coordinate complex. The present analysis firmly underlines the reliability of the EXAFS approach when X-ray diffraction data are not available. The suitable strategy, also including the statistical evaluation of the results, which has permitted us to build up the structural model for fitting the Ag complex starting from the Au one, is highlighted her

    Metal binding affinity and structural properties of calmodulin-like protein 14 from Arabidopsis thaliana

    In addition to the well-known Ca2+ sensor calmodulin, plants possess many calmodulin-like proteins (CMLs) that are predicted to have specific roles in the cell. Herein, we described the biochemical and biophysical characterization of recombinant Arabidopsis thaliana CML14. We applied isothermal titration calorimetry to analyze the energetics of Ca2+ and Mg2+ binding to CML14, and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, together with intrinsic and ANS-based fluorescence, to evaluate the structural effects of metal binding and metal-induced conformational changes. Furthermore, differential scanning calorimetry and limited proteolysis were used to characterize protein thermal and local stability. Our data demonstrate that CML14 binds one Ca2+ ion with micromolar affinity (K-d approximate to 12 mu M) and the presence of 10 mM Mg2+ decreases the Ca2+ affinity by approximate to 5-fold. Although binding of Ca2+ to CML14 increases protein stability, it does not result in a more hydrophobic protein surface and does not induce the large conformational rearrangement typical of Ca2+ sensors, but causes only localized structural changes in the unique functional EF-hand. Our data, together with a molecular modelling prediction, provide interesting insights into the biochemical properties of Arabidopsis CML14 and may be useful to direct additional studies aimed at understanding its physiological role
