    Get PDF

Starting from the analysis of a case study, this article presents the creation of a technological and pedagogical device enabling real time interaction between gesture and sound. The research has been developed during the class of “Movement Analysis” at Nice University. Several students from the Bachelor’s degree programme in Dance have been involved. This study analyzes how the sonification of both movement and muscular activity allows students to transduce haptic informations, previously experienced during the manipulation of an object, into somatic qualities, thereby enabling the construction of dancing patterns

Abstract:It is well known that, interactive media have become a major issue in both academic research and artistic practice. During the last years, motion sensing technologies have been proven to be a useful mean for movement’s analysis in relation to dance and music performances. Different domaines ranging from artistic creative process to pedagogical applications have been involved. Within this context, many scholars pointed out the crucial importance of sound agency in developing sensorimotor awareness. A phenomenological approach seem to be taking an increasingly prominent position in informing such theoretical framework. Multimodality and embodiment have been revealed to be the main features in order to understand the relation between movement, sound and mediation technologies. The case study presented is part of a research project that involves dance pedagogy and new technologies at Nice University. This paper focus on description of an interactive experience based on motion sensing/bio-signals technologies allowing dance students to explore the sense of touch in connection to objets’ manipulation and sound production. The goal of the experience was to analyze how multimodal connection between haptic and auditive feedbacks can be incorporated trough gesture and how, this relation affects perceptual organization of movement. As it emerges from this study, sound feedbacks seem to facilitate the transition from manipulation gestures to dance movements. Moreover, the arise of a “sonorous presence” enhances both proprioceptive awareness and corporeal imagination thereby affecting the movement composition process. Keywords: Interactive Technologies. Hemodynamic sensor in cardiac implantable electric devices: the endocardial accelaration technology

    Get PDF
There have been substantial progresses in the technology of cardiac implantable electric devices (CIEDs) during the past decades. One of the progresses is represented by the development of a hemodynamic sensor embedded at the tip of a pacing lead that measures myocardial contractility by the analysis of myocardial mechanical vibrations occurring during the cardiac cycle. This sensor, providing continuous hemodynamic monitoring, could play an important role in clinical practice because of several clinical applications in CIEDs recipients. The objectives of this work are to report how this sensor operates and to review the main findings about its clinical applications

Oxygen supersaturation protects coastal marine fauna from ocean warming

    Get PDF
Ocean warming affects the life history and fitness of marine organisms by, among others, increasing animal metabolism and reducing oxygen availability. In coastal habitats, animals live in close association with photosynthetic organisms whose oxygen supply supports metabolic demands and may compensate for acute warming. Using a unique high-frequency monitoring dataset, we show that oxygen supersaturation resulting from photosynthesis closely parallels sea temperature rise during diel cycles in Red Sea coastal habitats. We experimentally demonstrate that oxygen supersaturation extends the survival to more extreme temperatures of six species from four phyla. We clarify the mechanistic basis of the extended thermal tolerance by showing that hyperoxia fulfills the increased metabolic demand at high temperatures. By modeling 1 year of water temperatures and oxygen concentrations, we predict that oxygen supersaturation from photosynthetic activity invariably fuels peak animal metabolic demand, representing an underestimated factor of resistance and resilience to ocean warming in ectotherms

Practicing a Musical Instrument in Childhood is Associated with Enhanced Verbal Ability and Nonverbal Reasoning

Background: In this study we investigated the association between instrumental music training in childhood and outcomes closely related to music training as well as those more distantly related. Methodology/Principal Findings: Children who received at least three years (M = 4.6 years) of instrumental music training outperformed their control counterparts on two outcomes closely related to music (auditory discrimination abilities and fine motor skills) and on two outcomes distantly related to music (vocabulary and nonverbal reasoning skills). Duration of training also predicted these outcomes. Contrary to previous research, instrumental music training was not associated with heightened spatial skills, phonemic awareness, or mathematical abilities. Conclusions/Significance: While these results are correlational only, the strong predictive effect of training duration suggests that instrumental music training may enhance auditory discrimination, fine motor skills, vocabulary, and nonverba

During the last years, motion sensing technologies have radically transformed the universe of the artistic practice. This dramatic change has recently inspired new perspectives in scientific research. Music is actually among the most affected domaines by this expressive and epistemological renewal. The interactive relation between mediation technology, movement and sound, seems to be declined into two main modalities : on one hand, movement analysis’ technologies allow to study mutual connections between acoustic phenomenon and sensorimotor system, on the other hand, embodied understanding of musical experience can help to devise an holistic approach to interactive systems conception and development. Given this background scenario, this thesis focuses on how movement’s qualities transformation into sound allows the performer to become aware of physiological and imaginative processes in gesture composition. In this framework, sound feedback-movement relation is analyzed from an ecological point of view. According to this approach, mediation technology seems to elicit an autopoietic process of extension and intensification of corporeality. Especially in the artistic performance, sound interaction offers to performer a new sensorial geography that allows him/her to renew his/her perceptive organization and thereby rethink expressive composition of movement.
