    η-conversions of IPC implemented in atomic F

    It is known that the β-conversions of the full intuitionistic propositional calculus (IPC) translate into βη-conversions of the atomic polymorphic calculus Fat. Since Fat enjoys the property of strong normalization for βη-conversions, an alternative proof of strong normalization for IPC considering β-conversions can be derived. In the present article, we improve the previous result by analysing the translation of the η-conversions of the latter calculus into a technical variant of the former system (the atomic polymorphic calculus Fat^∧_at). In fact, from the strong normalization of Fat^∧_at we can derive the strong normalization of the full intuitionistic propositional calculus considering all the standard (β and η) conversions.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Rasiowa–Harrop disjunction property

    We show that there is a purely proof-theoretic proof of the Rasiowa–Harrop disjunction property for the full intuitionistic propositional calculus (IPC), via natural deduction, in which commuting conversions are not needed. Such proof is based on a sound and faithful embedding of IPC into an atomic polymorphic system. This result strengthens a homologous result for the disjunction property of IPC (presented in a recent paper co-authored with Fernando Ferreira) and answers a question then posed by Pierluigi Minari.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    A herbrandized functional interpretation of classical first-order logic

    We introduce a new typed combinatory calculus with a type constructor that, to each type σ, associates the star type σ^∗ of the nonempty finite subsets of elements of type σ. We prove that this calculus enjoys the properties of strong normalization and confluence. With the aid of this star combinatory calculus, we define a functional interpretation of first-order predicate logic and prove a corresponding soundness theorem. It is seen that each theorem of classical first-order logic is connected with certain formulas which are tautological in character.     Comparison of Mixture and Classification Maximum Likelihood Approaches in Poisson Regression Models

    In this work, we propose to compare two algorithms to compute maximum likelihood estimators of the parameters of a mixture Poisson regression models. To estimate these parameters, we may use the EM algorithm in a mixture approach or the CEM algorithm in a classification approach. The comparison of the two procedures was done through a simulation study of the performance of these approaches on simulated data sets in a target number of iterations. Simulation results show that the CEM algorithm is a good alternative to the EM algorithm for fitting Poisson mixture regression models, having the advantage of converging more quickly

    On Various Negative Translations

    Several proof translations of classical mathematics into intuitionistic mathematics have been proposed in the literature over the past century. These are normally referred to as negative translations or double-negation translations. Among those, the most commonly cited are translations due to Kolmogorov, Godel, Gentzen, Kuroda and Krivine (in chronological order). In this paper we propose a framework for explaining how these different translations are related to each other. More precisely, we define a notion of a (modular) simplification starting from Kolmogorov translation, which leads to a partial order between different negative translations. In this derived ordering, Kuroda and Krivine are minimal elements. Two new minimal translations are introduced, with Godel and Gentzen translations sitting in between Kolmogorov and one of these new translations.Comment: In Proceedings CL&C 2010, arXiv:1101.520

    Automatic Kalman-filter-based wavelet shrinkage denoising of 1D stellar spectra

    We propose a non-parametric method to denoise 1D stellar spectra based on wavelet shrinkage followed by adaptive Kalman thresholding. Wavelet shrinkage denoising involves applying the discrete wavelet transform (DWT) to the input signal, 'shrinking' certain frequency components in the transform domain, and then applying inverse DWT to the reduced components. The performance of this procedure is influenced by the choice of base wavelet, the number of decomposition levels, and the thresholding function. Typically, these parameters are chosen by 'trial and error', which can be strongly dependent on the properties of the data being denoised. We here introduce an adaptive Kalman-filter-based thresholding method that eliminates the need for choosing the number of decomposition levels. We use the 'Haar' wavelet basis, which we found to provide excellent filtering for 1D stellar spectra, at a low computational cost. We introduce various levels of Poisson noise into synthetic PHOENIX spectra, and test the performance of several common denoising methods against our own. It proves superior in terms of noise suppression and peak shape preservation. We expect it may also be of use in automatically and accurately filtering low signal-to-noise galaxy and quasar spectra obtained from surveys such as SDSS, Gaia, LSST, PESSTO, VANDELS, LEGA-C, and DESI

    The mosses of Easter Island

    The bryophyte flora of Easter Island has been poorly known primarily because few botanists have collected there. In order to increase the knowledge of the flora the two authors collected bryophytes from 12 localities on the island from April 28-May 3, 2000. The small island, which is south of the Tropic of Capricorn, is of volcanic origin and the volcanic soil as well as the destruction of most of the native flora have undoubtedly contributed to the paucity of bryophytes. The present study revealed that the bryophyte flora consists of only a few species, including one unidentifiable member of the Anthocerotaceae, 11 hepatics and 30 mosses. Eighteen mosses are new to the island. Three mosses, Chenia leptophylla (Müll. Hal.) R. H. Zander, Dicranella hawaiica (Müll. Hal.) Broth. and Tortella humilis (Hedw.) Jennings, are new for Chile, while three, Fissidens pascuanus Broth. in Skottsb., Ptychomitrium subcylindricum Thér. and Trematodon pascuanus Thér., are presently known to be endemic to Easter Island. Two of the three endemics, Fissidens pascuanus and Ptychomitrium subcylindricum, were rediscovered on the island. Fissidens pascuanus was found with sporophytes for the first time and a revised description of the species is provided
