The phytoplankton of the Gulf of California obtained by the E. W. Scipps in 1939 and 1940
The waters of the Gulf of California are fabulously rich in marine life; they fairly teem with multitudes of fish of both commercial and sport varieties. To maintain these large numbers there must be correspondingly huge crops of their ultimate food-the phytoplankton. And, indeed, it was the enormous quantity of these microscopic plants that gave the Gulf its early and descriptive name-the Vermilion Sea. In 1939 and again in 1940 the E. W. Scripps, research vessel of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography of the University of California, spent several months in these waters and among the data collected on these cruises were quantitative samples of this phytoplankton. Available from BioMed Central via the DOI in this record.Vibrio tubiashii NCIMB 1337 is a major and increasingly prevalent pathogen of bivalve mollusks, and shares a close phylogenetic relationship with both V. orientalis and V. coralliilyticus. It is a Gram-negative, curved rod-shaped bacterium, originally isolated from a moribund juvenile oyster, and is both oxidase and catalase positive. It is capable of growth under both aerobic and anaerobic conditions. Here we describe the features of this organism, together with the draft genome and annotation. A Survey of UV Bright Sources Behind the Halo of M31
We have performed a wide-area ultraviolet (UV) imaging survey using the
GALaxy Evolution eXplorer (GALEX) to search for bright, point-like UV sources
behind M31's extended halo. Our survey consisted of 46 pointings covering an
effective area of ~50 deg^2, in both the far-UV and near-UV channels. We
combined these data with optical R-band observations acquired with the WIYN
Mosaic-1 imager on the Kitt Peak National Observatory 0.9m WIYN telescope. An
analysis of the brightness and colors of sources matched between our
photometric catalogs yielded ~100 UV-bright quasar candidates. We have obtained
discovery spectra for 76 of these targets with the Kast spectrometer on the
Lick 3m telescope and confirm 30 active galactic nuclei and quasars, 29
galaxies at z > 0.02 including several early-type systems, 16 Galactic stars
(hot main-sequence stars), and one featureless source previously identified as
a BL Lac object. Future UV spectroscopy of the brightest targets with the
Cosmic Origins Spectrograph on the Hubble Space Telescope will enable a
systematic search for diffuse gas in the extended halo of M31.Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures. Accepted to MNRA
Prevalence of endemic pig-associated zoonoses in Southeast Asia: A review of findings from the Lao people's Democratic Republic
The increasing intensification of pork production in southeast Asia necessitates an urgent requirement to better understand the dual impact of pig-associated zoonotic disease on both pig production and human health in the region. Sharing porous borders with five countries and representing many regional ethnicities and agricultural practices, the Lao People's Democratic Republic (Lao PDR) appears well placed to gauge the levels of pig-associated zoonoses circulating in the wider region. Despite this, little is known about the true impact of zoonotic pathogens such as leptospirosis, Trichinella, hepatitis E virus (HEV), Japanese encephalitis (JE), and Taenia solium on human health and livestock production in the country. A comprehensive review of the published prevalences of these five pig-associated zoonoses in Lao PDR has demonstrated that although suspicion remains high of their existence in pig reservoirs across the country, epidemiological data are scarce; only 31 epidemiological studies have been undertaken on these diseases in the past 25 years. A greater understanding of the zoonoses prevalence and subsequent risks associated with pork production in the southeast Asian region could help focus public health and food safety interventions at key points along the value chain, benefiting both livestock producers and the broader animal and human health systems in the region
Stimulated Raman adiabatic passage analogs in classical physics
Stimulated Raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) is a well established technique
for producing coherent population transfer in a three-state quantum system. We
here exploit the resemblance between the Schrodinger equation for such a
quantum system and the Newton equation of motion for a classical system
undergoing torque to discuss several classical analogs of STIRAP, notably the
motion of a moving charged particle subject to the Lorentz force of a
quasistatic magnetic field, the orientation of a magnetic moment in a slowly
varying magnetic field, the Coriolis effect and the inertial frame dragging
effect. Like STIRAP, those phenomena occur for counterintuitively ordered field
pulses and are robustly insensitive to small changes in the interaction
