Mining for Culture: Reaching Out of Range

    Get PDF
The goal of this paper is to present a tool that will sustain the development of culturally relevant computing artifacts by providing an effective means of detecting culture identities and cultures of participation. Culturally relevant designs rely heavily on how culture impacts design and though the guidelines for producing culturally relevant objects provide a mechanism for incorporating culture in the design, there still requires an effective method for garnering and identifying said cultures that reflects a holistic view of the target audience. This tool presents culturally relevant designs as a process of communicating with key audiences and thus bridging people and technology in a way that once seemed out of range

Some Factors Influencing Fungicide Control of Leaf Rust and Stem Rust of Wheat

Stem rust, Puccinia graminis tritici Eriks. and Henn., and leaf rust, Puccinia recondita Rob. Ex Desm., destroyed an estimated 70% of the South Dakota winter wheat crop in 1962, a loss of more than 12 million bushels valued at $24 million (30). Similar losses have occurred periodically in South Dakota. Breeding programs have produced resistant varieties of spring and winter wheat; however, new races of rust have developed and attacked varieties heretofor resistant. For example, untiI 1952, the spring wheat varieties Pilot, Rival, and Mida were resistant to stem rust race 56, which had been the most prevalent race in the midwest since the 1930\u27s. Race 15-B erupted in epiphytotic proportions destroying large acreages of these varieties and resulting in their replacement by Selkirk, a variety resistant to races 56 and 15-B. The resistance provided by Selkirk has been supplemented by resistant Crimm, Chris, and other varieties. In spite of this progress, stem rust races have been found that are capable of damaging al I of these varieties. The winter wheat varieties Omaha, Pawnee, Nebred, and Warrior were widely grown untiI 1962 when race 56 destroyed 70% of the South Dakota crop. These varieties have been replaced primarily by Hurne, Lancer, Scout, and Gage, which are resistant to the common races but, again, are susceptible to potentially destructive races. Resistance to leaf rust is less common in current varieties than is stem rust resistance; moreover, this resistance has a narrow genetic base and is even less reliable than stem rust resistance. Several investigators have found that certain fungicides control both stem and leaf rust when applied at the proper time. One primary Iimitation of chemical control is cost of application. The first part of this study is an attempt to assess the feasibility of rust control and weed control by combining fungicides with 2,4-D. To gain maximum benefit from a protective fungicide spray, the fungicide must thoroughly cover the plant where the pathogen most commonly penetrates. Foliage density, wind direction, wind velocity, and the type of applicator are factors which may affect spray deposition on wheat plants. The second part of this study is an investigation to determine the effect of foliage density on spray deposition

Sediment Content in Antarctic Iceberg Fragments Sufficient to Sink the Ice

    Get PDF
Iceberg fragments recovered from the sea floor near Swift Glacier, Antarctica, contained sufficient sediment to sink the ice. Sediment concentrations in the samples would have caused them to settle at 0.13 to 0.35 m/s through the water column. Impact with the sea floor would significantly turbate soft sediments. Unlike sediment dumped from icebergs, the stratigraphy of the frozen sediments created by glacial processes may be preserved in the marine sedimentary record after melting of the ice. Negatively buoyant berg fragments may be common in polar regions, and when driven by currents may scour the sea floor up and down slopes unlike floating ice.

Critical assessment of the profile and ministry of the Catholic Diaconate in the Archdiocese of Cape Town

Magister Theologiae - MThThe service of deacons in the Church is documented from Apostolic times. A tradition attested already by St. Ireneus and influenced in the liturgy of ordination, sees the origin of the diaconate in the institution of the “seven” mentioned in the Acts of the Apostles (6:1-6). St Paul refers to the deacons and to bishops in his letter to the Philippians. (1:1), while in his first letter to Timothy (3:8-13) he lists the qualities and virtues which they should possess so as to exercise their ministry worthily. While the permanent diaconate was maintained from earliest Apostolic times to the present in the Eastern rite churches (Orthodox and Catholic), it gradually disappeared in the western church during the first millennium. The diaconate continued as a vestigial form as a temporary, final step along the course to ordination to the priesthood in the western church. In the 20th Century, the Permanent Diaconate was restored in the western church.Following the recommendations of the Second Vatican Council (in Lumen Gentium29), in 1967 Pope Paul VI issued the motu proprio Sacrum Diaconatus Ordinem, restoring the ancient practice of ordaining to the diaconate men who were not candidates for priestly ordination. The permanent deacons are assigned to work in a parish and to assist priests in their pastoral and administrative duties, but report directly to the bishop who appoints them. Unlike most clerics, permanent deacons are married or single men who also have a secular profession. In the Archdiocese of Cape Town, the first deacons to be ordained to the order of Permanent deacons took place in 1980. In the early days, the archdiocese had a clear policy for diaconate training and formation. Priests requested men to study towards becoming deacons. Over the past 30 years the bishops have ordained close to 100 deacons to minister in 75 parishes throughout the Archdiocese.Today there is a need to try to understand why deacons lack the zeal and passion that was so prevalent at their ordinations. Is it due to their training or has a need a risen for a deeper theological understanding of the diaconate. Priests do not fully understand the ministry of the deacons which on occasions gives rise to conflict within the parish.Currently more and more communities are calling on the parish deacon before approaching their parish priest for advice. It is in these theoretical grounds that a critical assessment of the Profile and Ministry of the Catholic Diaconate in the Archdiocese of Cape Town was undertaken. This is pioneer research in the Archdiocese

An Empirical Investigation of the Significant Others Concept

    Get PDF
This study, following a Social Psychological approach to the study of human behavior, as attempted to (1) develop an objective instrument for identifying “significant others” and (2) present some evidence concerning the validity and reliability of this measuring instrument. Attention is focused especially on the adolescent pattern of “significant others” relations emphasizing the role of parents as “significant others.” A sociometric technique, being both objective and flexible has been used in this study. For these reasons, this research study presents evidence concerning the theoretical validity and reliability of an objective test of interpersonal relations based on this form of measurement. It is hypothesized that a lack of “significant others” relations to others will lead to disturbances in self-conception and behavior. Results of this study present considerable evidence which points to the strong probability that the significant others measure which has been developed is a reliable and valid one. The lack of a strong positive relationship to parents was also found to be associated with disturbances in self-conception indicating the potential important of the concept of “significant others” for understanding juvenile behavior problems

Human-Elaboration-Object-Construal Contingency Framework for Mobile Decision-Aids (MoDA©) in In-Store Shopping

    Get PDF
Mobile migration is under way with online retail shifting to mobile and in-store shoppers increasingly using their smart phones for decision-making. However, the use of mobile devices to acquire product information in-store often results in information overload and decision abandonment, leading to a retailer\u27s lost opportunity for in-store conversion. Hence, there is a critical need to enhance consumers\u27 abilities to make decisions in-stores, when they lack information, time and cognitive resources. To address this need, we propose a conceptual framework for designing conversational, mobile decision-aids (MoDA), mobile-app based intelligent systems, for in-store shopping, grounded in principles of user- and object-adaptive, intelligent information retrieval and decision strategy

The discussions of motives and requirements for telerobotics application demonstrated that, in many cases, lack of progress was a result not of limited opportunities but of inadequate mechanisms and resources for promoting opportunities. Support for this conclusion came from Telerobotics, Inc., one of the few companies devoted primarily to telerobot systems. They have produced units for such diverse applications as nuclear fusion research, particle accelerators, cryogenics, firefighting, marine biology/undersea systems and nuclear mobile robotics. Mr. Flatau offered evidence that telerobotics research is only rarely supported by the private sector and that it often presents a difficult market. Questions on the mechanisms contained within the NASA technology transfer process for promoting commercial opportunities were fielded by Ray Gilbert and Tom Walters. A few points deserve emphasis: (1) NASA/industry technology transfer occurs in both directions and NASA recognizes the opportunity to learn a great deal from industry in the fields of automation and robotics; (2) promotion of technology transfer projects takes a demand side approach, with requests to industry for specific problem identification. NASA then proposes possible solutions; and (3) comittment ofmotivated and technically qualified people on each end of a technology transfer is essential
