    Thermal Analyses of Apollo Lunar Soils Provide Evidence for Water in Permanently Shadowed Areas

    Thermally-evolved-gas analyses were performed on the Apollo lunar soils shortly after their return to Earth [1-8]. The analyses revealed the presence of water evolving at temperatures above 200 C. Of particular interest are samples that were collected from permanently-shadowed locations (e.g., under a boulder) with a second sample collected in nearby sunlight, and pairs in which one was taken from the top of a trench, and the second was taken at the base of the trench, where the temperature would have been -10 to -20 C prior to the disturbance [9]. These samples include 63340/63500, 69941/69961, and 76240/76280. At the time that this research was first reported, the idea of hydrated minerals on the lunar surface was somewhat novel. Nevertheless, goethite was observed in lunar breccias from Apollo 14 [10], and it was shown that goethite, hematite and magnetite could originate in an equilibrium assemblage of lunar rock

    Vaccine Cooler for the Global Poor

    Cal Poly physics professors Peter Schwartz and Nathan Heston approached the Solar Freeze team with the problem that remote communities in Africa have limited access to modern-day medicine or vaccines. They suggested that we try and design a cooling device that can keep vaccines cold for multiple days at a time while the medicine is transported to remote villages. Currently, there are vaccine cooler products on the market, but most of them are very expensive or lack portability. Peter and Nate have tasked the Solar Freeze team to come up with a less expensive solution that is also portable and can handle the harsh environments of Africa. Due to the fact that Peter and Nate have done extensive research and laboratory experiments with using a solar panel to power thermo-electric coolers, they suggested that a thermo-electric cooler should be used to keep the cooler cold. The Solar Freeze team’s goal is to design a solar-powered vaccine cooler that utilizes thermo-electric coolers to freeze a phase change material and keep vaccines at optimal temperature

    Data-driven approach to optimum wavelength selection for diffuse optical imaging

    The production of accurate and independent images of the changes in concentration of oxyhemoglobin and deoxyhemoglobin by diffuse optical imaging is heavily dependent on which wavelengths of near-infrared light are chosen to interrogate the target tissue. Although wavelengths can be selected by theoretical methods, in practice the accuracy of reconstructed images will be affected by wavelength-specific and system-specific factors such as laser source power and detector sensitivity. We describe the application of a data-driven approach to optimum wavelength selection for the second generation of University College London's multichannel, time-domain optical tomography system (MONSTIR II). By performing a functional activation experiment using 12 different wavelengths between 690 and 870 nm, we were able to identify the combinations of 2, 3, and 4 wavelengths which most accurately reproduced the results obtained using all 12 wavelengths via an imaging approach. Our results show that the set of 2, 3, and 4 wavelengths which produce the most accurate images of functional activation are [770, 810], [770, 790, 850], and [730, 770, 810, 850] respectively, but also that the system is relatively robust to wavelength selection within certain limits. Although these results are specific to MONSTIR II, the approach we developed can be applied to other multispectral near-infrared spectroscopy and optical imaging systems

    This is a preliminary report on the state of the art of adaptive control. It in no way attempts to review all of the various adaptive systems which have been proposed or constructed® Probably the most complete effort in this direction is WADC TR 59-49# The Proceedings of the Self Adaptive Flight Control Systems Symposium, Edited by P. C. Gregory® Rather this report attempts a synthesis of the present philosophy on adaptive control and is essentially a definition of the problem® The report attempts to subdivide the adaptive control problem into three subdivisions and to assess present progress in each of these areas. Ideas that have been proposed by various authors are brought together and given unified treatment® In making this organization# various gaps in the present state of the art have become apparent and these are under intensive survey presently at Purdue. The initial portion of the project# consisting of this organization terminated several months ago and at present the project personnel are engaged on original research along the lines indicated by the monthly progress reports to WADD. Further interim reports will discuss these items and in accordance with present Air Force practice the final report will contain all of the information of the interim reports and will thus be self sufficient

    A possible Mesoarchaean impact structure at Setlagole, North West Province, South Africa : aeromagnetic and field evidence

    A 25 to 30 km wide magnetic anomaly within the >2.79 Ga granite-greenstone rocks of the northwestern Kaapvaal Craton is spatially associated with megabreccia outcrops near the village of Setlagole in the North West Province, South Africa. The breccia comprises angular to rounded ciasts of TTG gneisses, granites and granodiorites, with les.ser amounts of amphilxjlite, calc-silicate rock and banded iron-formation as well as unusual dark grey to black, irregular, centimetre- to decimetre-sized clasts that show evidence of fluidal behaviour and plastic deformation during incorporation into the breccia. The largest cla.sts reach up to several metres in size. Evidence of fluvial transport is found in rare thin sandy to gritty layers that show crude bedding and upward-fining with layers dipping gently to the northeast. The breccia matrix is highly variable but is dominated by angular mineral clasls (mainly quartz and feldspar, with subsidiary biotite, amphibole and epidote) with interstitial chlorite. The clasts show variable amounts of alteration (saussuritization, sericitization, chloritization of biotite and amphibole). The dark clasts contain angular quartz and feldspar and small biotite fragments in a cryptocrystalline chlorite-dominant matrix. Textures indicate a lower greenschist faciès metamorphic overprint. The absence of lava, dolomite or quartzite cla.sts suggests that the breccia formed prior to the deposition of the Neoarchaean Ventersdorp and Eoproterozoic Transvaal Supergroups, whereas the metamorphic grade indicates that it postdates the ca. 2.79 Ga amphibolite-facies metamorphic peak in the region. This suggests a late Mesoarchaean or early Neoarchaean (ca. 2.79 to 2.71 Ga) age for the breccia. A similar age is inferred for the magnetic anomaly based on postulated crosscutting dyke ages. Despite a comprehensive search, unequivocal shock-diagnostic microdeformation features have not yet Ixïen found in either the breccia or the highly-weathered granitic gneiss outcrops in the central parts of the anomaly. The unusual plastically-deformed dark clasts may represent chloritized mud clasts or impact melt clasts. Geochemical data on these clasts and other components of the megabreccia provide no conclusive support for a meteoritic origin, but the unparalleled comptjsition of the clasts and their high trace element abundances of Ni, Cr, V, Zn and Co relative to rocks of the Kraaipan granite-greenstone basement, sugge.sts an unusual origin for this matrix material. Given the distinctive nature of the breccia and its proximity to a large circular magnetic anomaly, it is postulated that the megabreccia could represent a mass or debris flow in a marine .setting triggered by an impact tsunami or resurge. Subsequent faulting may have led to the preferential preservation of these deposits. This interpretation of the Setlagole megabreccia and geophysical anomaly is evaluated in terms of other possible modes of origin and it is concluded that a meteoritic source best fits the available data

    Outdoor learning spaces: the case of forest school

The research takes the example of forest school, a form of regular and repeated outdoor learning increasingly common in primary schools. This research focuses on how the learning space at forest school shapes the experience of children and forest school leaders as they engage in learning outside the classroom. The learning space is considered as a physical space, and also in a more metaphorical way as a space where different behaviours are permitted, and a space set apart from the national curriculum. Through semi-structured interviews with members of the community of practice of forest school leaders, the paper seeks to determine the significance of being outdoors on the forest school experience. How does this learning space differ from the classroom environment? What aspects of the forest school learning space support pupils’ experiences? How does the outdoor learning space affect teaching, and the dynamics of learning while at forest school? The research shows that the outdoor space provides new opportunities for children and teachers to interact and learn, and revealed how forest school leaders and children co-create a learning environment in which the boundaries between classroom and outdoor learning, teacher and pupil, are renegotiated to stimulate teaching and learning. Forest school practitioners see forest school as a separate learning space that is removed from the physical constraints of the classroom and pedagogical constraints of the national curriculum to provide a more flexible and responsive learning environment.Peer reviewe

    Re-evaluation of the near infrared spectra of mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase: Implications for non invasive in vivo monitoring of tissues

    We re-determined the near infrared (NIR) spectral signatures (650-980 nm) of the different cytochrome c oxidase redox centres, in the process separating them into their component species. We confirm that the primary contributor to the oxidase NIR spectrum between 700 and 980 nm is cupric CuA, which in the beef heart enzyme has a maximum at 835 nm. The 655 nm band characterises the fully oxidised haem a3/CuBbinuclear centre; it is bleached either when one or more electrons are added to the binuclear centre or when the latter is modified by ligands. The resulting 'perturbed' binuclear centre is also characterised by a previously unreported broad 715-920 nm band. The NIR spectra of certain stable liganded species (formate and CO), and the unstable oxygen reaction compounds P and F, are similar, suggesting that the latter may resemble the stable species electronically. Oxidoreduction of haem a makes no contribution either to the 835 nm maximum or the 715 nm band. Our results confirm the ability of NIRS to monitor the CuAcentre of cytochrome oxidase activity in vivo, although noting some difficulties in precise quantitative interpretations in the presence of perturbations of the haem a3/CuBbinuclear centre

    The TgsGP gene is essential for resistance to human serum in Trypanosoma brucei gambiense

    Trypanosoma brucei gambiense causes 97% of all cases of African sleeping sickness, a fatal disease of sub-Saharan Africa. Most species of trypanosome, such as T. b. brucei, are unable to infect humans due to the trypanolytic serum protein apolipoprotein-L1 (APOL1) delivered via two trypanosome lytic factors (TLF-1 and TLF-2). Understanding how T. b. gambiense overcomes these factors and infects humans is of major importance in the fight against this disease. Previous work indicated that a failure to take up TLF-1 in T. b. gambiense contributes to resistance to TLF-1, although another mechanism is required to overcome TLF-2. Here, we have examined a T. b. gambiense specific gene, TgsGP, which had previously been suggested, but not shown, to be involved in serum resistance. We show that TgsGP is essential for resistance to lysis as deletion of TgsGP in T. b. gambiense renders the parasites sensitive to human serum and recombinant APOL1. Deletion of TgsGP in T. b. gambiense modified to uptake TLF-1 showed sensitivity to TLF-1, APOL1 and human serum. Reintroducing TgsGP into knockout parasite lines restored resistance. We conclude that TgsGP is essential for human serum resistance in T. b. gambiense

    Differences between <i>Trypanosoma brucei gambiense</i> groups 1 and 2 in their resistance to killing by Trypanolytic factor 1

    &lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;Background:&lt;/b&gt; The three sub-species of &lt;i&gt;Trypanosoma brucei&lt;/i&gt; are important pathogens of sub-Saharan Africa. &lt;i&gt;T. b. brucei&lt;/i&gt; is unable to infect humans due to sensitivity to trypanosome lytic factors (TLF) 1 and 2 found in human serum. &lt;i&gt;T. b. rhodesiense&lt;/i&gt; and &lt;i&gt;T. b. gambiense&lt;/i&gt; are able to resist lysis by TLF. There are two distinct sub-groups of &lt;i&gt;T. b. gambiense&lt;/i&gt; that differ genetically and by human serum resistance phenotypes. Group 1 &lt;i&gt;T. b. gambiense&lt;/i&gt; have an invariant phenotype whereas group 2 show variable resistance. Previous data indicated that group 1 &lt;i&gt;T. b. gambiense&lt;/i&gt; are resistant to TLF-1 due in-part to reduced uptake of TLF-1 mediated by reduced expression of the TLF-1 receptor (the haptoglobin-hemoglobin receptor (&lt;i&gt;HpHbR&lt;/i&gt;)) gene. Here we investigate if this is also true in group 2 parasites.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;Methodology:&lt;/b&gt; Isogenic resistant and sensitive group 2 &lt;i&gt;T. b. gambiense&lt;/i&gt; were derived and compared to other T. brucei parasites. Both resistant and sensitive lines express the &lt;i&gt;HpHbR&lt;/i&gt; gene at similar levels and internalized fluorescently labeled TLF-1 similar fashion to &lt;i&gt;T. b. brucei&lt;/i&gt;. Both resistant and sensitive group 2, as well as group 1 &lt;i&gt;T. b. gambiense&lt;/i&gt;, internalize recombinant APOL1, but only sensitive group 2 parasites are lysed.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;&lt;b&gt;Conclusions:&lt;/b&gt; Our data indicate that, despite group 1 &lt;i&gt;T. b. gambiense&lt;/i&gt; avoiding TLF-1, it is resistant to the main lytic component, APOL1. Similarly group 2 &lt;i&gt;T. b. gambiense&lt;/i&gt; is innately resistant to APOL1, which could be based on the same mechanism. However, group 2 &lt;i&gt;T. b. gambiense&lt;/i&gt; variably displays this phenotype and expression does not appear to correlate with a change in expression site or expression of &lt;i&gt;HpHbR&lt;/i&gt;. Thus there are differences in the mechanism of human serum resistance between &lt;i&gt;T. b. gambiense&lt;/i&gt; groups 1 and 2.&lt;/p&gt
