The solubilities of gases in liquids are interesting, not only from a practical point of view, but also because they provide a rigorous touchstone to test the structural models on the liquid state. In this work the solubilities of 13 nonpolar gases, He, Ne, Ar, Kr, Xe, H2, D2, N2, CH4, C2H4, C2H6, CF4, and SF6, in 2, 5-dimethyltetrahydrofuran at five temperatures between (273.15 and 303.15) K and 101.32 kPa partial pressure of gas were measured and the associated thermodynamic functions were calculated. Dichas palabras se han convertido en muy comunes en nuestro vocabulario. Observamos como dichas palabras van asociadas a destrucción de empleo, reducción de horario o jornadas laborales. Asociándolo a la actual crisis económica, y como consecuencia de ella a la reforma laboral llevada a cabo, nos encontramos con la realidad del aumento en el uso habitual de esta práctica, y como todo el mundo habla de ella, aunque algunos no saben siquiera que significan realmente. Currently, almost 50% of the non-ischemic forms of dilated cardiomyopathy are classified as idiopathic. Imaging techniques are essential both for the etiological study and for taking tissue samples. With this case we want to highlight the role of imaging tests in diagnosis, treatment and forecast.Actualmente alrededor del 50% de las formas de miocardiopatía dilatada no isquémica son clasificadas como idiopáticas. Las técnicas de imagen resultan fundamentales tanto para el estudio etiológico como para guiar la toma de muestras anatomopatológicas. The cardiomyopathy of cystic fibrosis: a modern form of Keshan disease

IntroductionWe conducted a study to determine the prevalence of structural heart disease in patients with CF, the characteristics of a cardiomyopathy not previously described in this population, and its possible relationship with nutritional deficiencies in CF.MethodsWe studied 3 CMP CF patients referred for heart-lung transplantation and a prospective series of 120 adult CF patients. All patients underwent a clinical examination, blood tests including levels of vitamins and trace elements, and echocardiography with evaluation of myocardial strain. Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR) was performed in patients with CMP and in a control group. Histopathological study was performed on hearts obtained in transplant or necropsy.ResultsWe found a prevalence of 10% (CI 4.6%–15.4%) of left ventricular (LV) dysfunction in the prospective cohort. Myocardial strain parameters were already altered in CF patients with otherwise normal hearts. Histopathological examination of 4 hearts from CF CMP patients showed a unique histological pattern of multifocal myocardial fibrosis similar to Keshan disease. Four of the five CF CMP patients undergoing CMR showed late gadolinium uptake, with a characteristic patchy pattern in 3 cases (p &lt; 0.001 vs. CF controls). Selenium deficiency (Se &lt; 60 µg/L) was associated with more severe LV dysfunction, higher prevalence of CF CMP, higher NTproBNP levels, and more severe pulmonary and digestive involvement.Conclusion10% of adults with CF showed significant cardiac involvement, with histological and imaging features resembling Keshan disease. Selenium deficiency was associated with the presence and severity of LV dysfunction in these patients

Cause of Death and Predictors of All-Cause Mortality in Anticoagulated Patients With Nonvalvular Atrial Fibrillation : Data From ROCKET AF

Identification of causes of death and contemporary risk factors for all-cause mortality may guide interventions. Methods and Results-In the Rivaroxaban Once Daily Oral Direct Factor Xa Inhibition Compared with Vitamin K Antagonism for Prevention of Stroke and Embolism Trial in Atrial Fibrillation (ROCKET AF) study, patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation were randomized to rivaroxaban or dose-adjusted warfarin. Cox proportional hazards regression with backward elimination identified factors at randomization that were independently associated with all-cause mortality in the 14 171 participants in the intention-to-treat population. The median age was 73 years, and the mean CHADS(2) score was 3.5. Over 1.9 years of median follow-up, 1214 (8.6%) patients died. Kaplan-Meier mortality rates were 4.2% at 1 year and 8.9% at 2 years. The majority of classified deaths (1081) were cardiovascular (72%), whereas only 6% were nonhemorrhagic stroke or systemic embolism. No significant difference in all-cause mortality was observed between the rivaroxaban and warfarin arms (P=0.15).
