This paper is inserted in the analytical framework that focuses on the participation of populist forces in governments. It aims to contribute to the scientific debate analysing the left-wing populist in power in Europe. One of the most exemplary case is undoubtedly ‘Podemos’that, since January 2020, has been part of the Sánchez II government in Spain. It is interesting to understand how this political subject that is born in response to the economic, political and social 2008 crisis and that defined itself as anti-system as to be the system. Further, starting from its integration into the institutional system, it will be analysed the role it covers within the government and the practical results achieved. Then, this will also allow the analysis of the change of left-wing forces in the European context. The analysis of the Podemos participation in government focuses on a particular moment of the European and world context, i.e., during and after the Covid-19 crisis. The aim is to show whether Podemos, once in government, carries out policies responsive to the main cleavages that characterise its discourse and what effects on the political context. The analysis will be carried out by comparing the most representative policies of Podemos’ ministries and through semi-structured interviews conducted between May and November 2022 with leading members of the party and Spanish government

IS THE SENSE OF BELONGING A STRATEGIC RESOURCE FOR ADOLESCENT IDENTITY?

In the international literature the abstract representation of the adolescent as a product of childhood and pubertal maturation has obscured a deeper reflection on the real generational conditions of contemporary adolescents. The different situations in which adolescents are inserted imply a necessary redefinition of their sense of belonging to depart no more from the usual pre-built schemes but by a practice, become mandatory, which is that to make choices. This implies not only a high reflective capacity of adolescents to redefine the contours of the semantic of their world life but also to combine and distinguish at the same time the virtual reality from the real one. In this paper we show that for the digital natives belonging remains a criterion for defining the personality and the overall identity of the adolescent. In the light of these assumptions a pilot study (qualitative and quantitative) has been carried out among adolescents in three Italian cities with the aim to investigate the nature of the link between the adolescent growth and the sense of belonging, in order to understand if and in which terms this could be a strategic resource for identity

Accumulation of driver and passenger mutations during tumor progression

Major efforts to sequence cancer genomes are now occurring throughout the world. Though the emerging data from these studies are illuminating, their reconciliation with epidemiologic and clinical observations poses a major challenge. In the current study, we provide a novel mathematical model that begins to address this challenge. We model tumors as a discrete time branching process that starts with a single driver mutation and proceeds as each new driver mutation leads to a slightly increased rate of clonal expansion. Using the model, we observe tremendous variation in the rate of tumor development - providing an understanding of the heterogeneity in tumor sizes and development times that have been observed by epidemiologists and clinicians. Furthermore, the model provides a simple formula for the number of driver mutations as a function of the total number of mutations in the tumor. Finally, when applied to recent experimental data, the model allows us to calculate, for the first time, the actual selective advantage provided by typical somatic mutations in human tumors in situ. This selective advantage is surprisingly small, 0.005 +- 0.0005, and has major implications for experimental cancer research

Prediction of contralateral breast cancer: statistical aspects and prediction performance

Women with breast cancer often wonder whether they should have their other breast removed as well, to prevent a potential tumor from developing there. The exact risks vary significantly per person. We used information about patients, breast cancer characteristics and treatments, and rare and common genetic variant correlated with a higher or lower risk of developing breast cancer in the other breast in large datasets to develop and validate statistical models to predict each patient’s risk of developing a tumor. We investigated whether and how these models might be clinically useful to better inform patients and physicians to tailor clinical decision making about potential strategies to prevent or early detect a tumor in the opposite breast. We discussed statistical aspects about model development and validation, and we provided frameworks about how to develop and assess prediction performance of risk prediction models using motivating examples in breast cancer.LUMC / Geneeskund

Enhancing the accuracy of engine calibration through a computer aided calibration algorithm

    Get PDF
Abstract This paper addresses a novel Computer Aided Calibration software developed by the authors to overcome a critical issue of the traditional calibration process: improve the calibration accuracy. The algorithm includes some innovative features aimed at error minimization through a complete parametric analysis of a target ECU functions. Therefore, it is possible to assess if further quantities that are not considered as calibration parameters within the current ECU function model actually affect the quantity estimated by the function itself. If so, a more accurate physical model can be implemented within the ECU function to increase the accuracy of the calibration process
