Structural characterization and differentiation of modified isomeric tryptophans

    Get PDF
AbstractDifferent mass spectrometry (MS) techniques have been applied to the study of modified tryptophan isomers obtained by photochemical reactions. The gas phase behavior of the molecular ions and the most abundant fragment ions produced under electron ionization has been selectively studied by MS/MS experiments. Both the fragmentation reactions occurring in the ion source, as well as those produced under collision-induced dissociation conditions have allowed to characterize and differentiate each isomer from the others. Investigation of a bisubstituted derivative has been useful in the rationalization of the gas phase behavior of this series of modified tryptophans. This study has allowed the evaluation of the role played by the substituents and their positions at the indolic ring on the gas phase decompositions that are distinctive and selective for each isomer. The occurrence of regiospecific reactions suggests that isomerization phenomena do not occur either in the molecular ions or in the main fragment ions in the gas phase

The issue of work inclusion of people with disabilities pertains to economic-social, legislativeand educational-pedagogical aspects. In relation to the recent Istat data (2019) on the activeparticipation of people with disabilities in the world of work, it is increasingly necessary to identifywork inclusion paths designed by effective territorial networks of public and private actors. In particular, the contribution aims to investigate the training aspects of the Disability Manager’sprofessional figure, highlighting the importance of the pedagogical contribution in order to raiseawareness and promote an inclusive culture within the company contexts for the developmentof each person’s capabilities (Sen, 2004) and support the self-determination process (Giaconi,2015; Cottini, 2016). The Disability Manager, in fact, is identified as the first support contact forthe worker with disabilities, both during access to employment and for the performance ofhis/her duties or for any possible conflict or inconvenience situation. Its task is also to developoperational proposals that facilitate the inclusive process in the business context in addition tothe reasonable adaptation of work-stations, tools and workplaces. In order to make the work experience a self-empowerment process (Caldin, Scollo, 2018), as wellas a possibility of expression of citizenship rights and social duty, special pedagogy is the sciencepar excellence capable of promoting and support the training of company specialists who guaranteethe welfare conditions of workers with disabilities

Graded vertical phase separation of donor/acceptor species for polymer solar cells

The donor/acceptor inter-mixing in bulk heterojunction (BHJ) solar cells is a critical parameter, often leading to irreproducible performance of the finished device. An alternative solution-processed device fabrication strategy towards a better control of the micro/nano-structured morphology consists of a sequential coating of the donor (e.g., poly-(3-hexylthiophene), P3HT) and the acceptor (e.g., [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester, PCBM) from orthogonal solvents. We demonstrate that, in spite of the solvent orthogonality, this technique does not lead to a well-defined bilayer with a sharp interface, but it rather results in a graded vertical phase-separated junction, resulting from the diffusion of the PCBM in the P3HT bottom layer. We are able to control the diffusion of PCBM, which occurs preferentially in the amorphous P3HT domains, by easily varying the ratio between crystalline/amorphous domains in the P3HT. Such a ratio can be simply modified by changing the solvent for P3HT. We show that the donor–acceptor diffused bilayer (DB) junction is an intermediate structure which combines both advantages of the well-defined bilayer and conventional BHJ configurations. Indeed, the DB device geometry ensures the good reproducibility and charge percolation, like the well-defined bilayer, while preserving the interpenetration of the donor and acceptor species, resulting in an efficient charge separation, characteristic of the BHJ. Overall the annealed DB device geometry can be assimilated to a graded BHJ with an improved reproducibility and mean power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 3.45%, higher than that of the standard BHJ devices of 3.07%. Furthermore, we demonstrate the highest performance for the as-cast DB device with a PCE of 2.58%. It is worthy to note that our DB device exhibits improved open circuit voltage, fill factor, series and shunt resistances, which denote that the vertically phase separated DB junction ensures improved charge percolation

AbstractThe fish stunning/slaughtering procedure has an important role both for the ethical aspect related to animal welfare and for the potential quality of the final products. Stressful harvest procedure and killing methods can negatively influence the post mortem biochemical processes with a consequent faster fish freshness loss. In particular, killing procedures causing a long agony are not humane and can shorten fish shelf life; others, more humane, can have risks for the consumers health (anaesthetics or chemical substances) or are not feasible in small/medium size fish industry (spiking and knocking). The aim of this study was to compare the traditional killing method (asphyxia - A) used for rainbow trout (Onchorynchus mykiss) with an innovative stunning/slaughtering method (two-stage electric stun: 2s at a 500Hz electric field of 2.5V/cm and then 58s at a 50Hz electric field of 0.75V/cm - E), through the study of their effects on stress and quality indicators in fish fed with traditional fish meal..

Synthesis and biological characterization of a new fluorescent probe for vesicular trafficking based on polyazamacrocycle derivative

The fluorescent probes represent an important tool in the biological study, in fact characterization of cellular structures and organelles are an important tool-target for understanding the mechanisms regulating most biological processes. Recently, a series of polyamino-macrocycles based on 1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane was synthesized, bearing one or two NBD units (AJ2NBD·4HCl) useful as sensors for metal cations and halides able to target and to detect apolar environment, as lipid membranes. In this paper, we firstly illustrate the chemical synthesis of the AJ2NBD probe, its electronic absorption spectra and its behavior regarding pH of the environment. Lack of any cellular toxicity and an efficient labelling on fresh, living cells was demonstrated, allowing the use of AJ2NBD in biological studies. In particular, this green fluorescent probe may represent a potential dye for the compartments involved in the endosomal/autophagic pathway. This research's field should benefit from the use of AJ2NBD as a vesicular tracer, however, to ensure the precise nature of vesicles/vacuoles traced by this new probe, other more specific tests are needed
