Remarkable change of tunneling conductance in YBCO films in fields up to 32.4T
We studied the tunneling density of states in YBCO films under strong
currents flowing along node directions. The currents were induced by fields of
up to 32.4T parallel to the film surface and perpendicular to the
planes. We observed a remarkable change in the tunneling conductance at high
fields where the gap-like feature shifts discontinuously from 15meV to a lower
bias of 11meV, becoming more pronounced as the field increases. The effect
takes place in increasing fields around 9T and the transition back to the
initial state occurs around 5T in decreasing fields. We argue that this
transition is driven by surface currents induced by the applied magnetic field.Comment: 4 pages, 7 figure

Engaging with economic geography in the "real" world: a central role for field teaching
Debates concerning how to engage students with economic geography have ignored the important role of field teaching. This paper argues that fieldwork must remain a key component of economic geographical teaching and that it offers a variety of advantages to overcoming student disinterest in the sub-discipline. It goes on to argue that field teaching must be developed, not neglected, in economic geography and illustrates its pedagogical advantages with reference to the example of a field class in north-east England
Multiangle observations of Arctic clouds from FIRE ACE: June 3, 1998, case study
In May and June 1998 the Airborne Multiangle Imaging Spectroradiometer (AirMISR) participated in the FIRE Arctic Cloud Experiment (ACE). AirMISR is an airborne instrument for obtaining multiangle imagery similar to that of the satellite-borne MISR instrument. This paper presents a detailed analysis of the data collected on June 3, 1998. In particular, AirMISR radiance measurements are compared with measurements made by two other instruments, the Cloud Absorption Radiometer (CAR) and the MODIS airborne simulator (MAS), as well as to plane-parallel radiative transfer simulations. It is found that the AirMISR radiance measurements and albedo estimates compare favorably both with the other instruments and with the radiative transfer simulations. In addition to radiance and albedo, the multiangle AirMISR data can be used to obtain estimates of cloud top height using stereoimaging techniques. Comparison of AirMISR retrieved cloud top height (using the complete MISR-based stereoimaging approach) shows excellent agreement with the measurements from the airborne Cloud Lidar System (CLS) and ground-based millimeterwave cloud radar
Quantum interference and non-locality of independent photons from disparate sources
We quantitatively investigate the non-classicality and non-locality of a
whole new class of mixed disparate quantum and semiquantum photon sources at
the quantum-classical boundary. The latter include photon added thermal and
photon added coherent sources, experimentally investigated recently by Zavatta
et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 140406 (2009)]. The key quantity in our
investigations is the visibility of the corresponding photon-photon correlation
function. We present explicit results on the violations of the Cauchy-Schwarz
inequality - which is a measure of nonclassicality - as well as of Bell-type

A study of thermal transitions in a new semicrystalline thermoplastic polyimide
A polyimide derive from 4,4'-isophthaloyl diphthalic anhydride (IDPA) and 1,3-bis (4-aminophenoxy 4'-benzoyl) benzene (1,3-BABB) having semicrystalline behavior was prepared and characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and wide angle X-ray scattering (WAXS). Thus a poly(amic acid) film cured in air for one hour each at 100 and 200 C displayed an endotherm at 286 C, followed by a crystallization exotherm at 317 C, and a second melting transition at 350 C. The 286 C melting point appeared to result from earlier solvent-induced crystallization. Films cast from DMAc, air dried, and soaked in methylene chloride could not be induced into semicrystallinity. The fully cured polyimide has a Tg of 216 C. Films heated to temperatures as high as 100 C for one hour in air were transparent and light yellow in color. Those films heated to or above 125 C were translucent. Polarized light microscopy revealed the presence of spherulites 608 micrometers in diameter in a sample cured to 275 C in air. Two film samples, one cured to 275 and the other to 325 C, were evaluated for tensile and ultimate strength, modulus, and percent elongation at 25 and 200 C. These values remained essentially constant at each test temperature
Vibrational Density Matrix Renormalization Group
Variational approaches for the calculation of vibrational wave functions and
energies are a natural route to obtain highly accurate results with
controllable errors. However, the unfavorable scaling and the resulting high
computational cost of standard variational approaches limit their application
to small molecules with only few vibrational modes. Here, we demonstrate how
the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) can be exploited to optimize
vibrational wave functions (vDMRG) expressed as matrix product states. We study
the convergence of these calculations with respect to the size of the local
basis of each mode, the number of renormalized block states, and the number of
DMRG sweeps required. We demonstrate the high accuracy achieved by vDMRG for
small molecules that were intensively studied in the literature. We then
proceed to show that the complete fingerprint region of the sarcosyn-glycin
dipeptide can be calculated with vDMRG.Comment: 21 pages, 5 figures, 4 table

The landscape is increasingly perceived as a resource. For this reason, it is necessary to find legal, political and economic instruments that will succeed in managing this “resource landscape” in the long term. The Swiss government recently introduced the instrument of regional nature parks into the legislation governing nature and landscape preservation; the proposed parks are organized on the basis of the French model. The examination of the new parks from the perspective of much older management structures, i.e. the civic municipalities (bourgeoisies) and corporations, makes it possible to demonstrate the strengths and weaknesses of each of these instruments in their contribution to the resolution of use rivalries between actors who use or influence the resource landscape. This comparison also enables the formulation of practical recommendations regarding the management of this resource
Inappropriate medicine prescribing in older South Africans: A cross-sectional analysis of medicine claims data
Background. Prescribing for older patients is a well-recognised problem, and inappropriate items are prescribed frequently. Several tools and criteria are available to promote rational prescribing in older patients.Objective. To determine the prevalence of potentially inappropriate prescriptions (PIPs) in older South African patients.Methods. A retrospective drug utilisation review was conducted using medicine claims data over a 1-year period. Patients aged ≥65 years with at least one paid claim for any medicine item during this period were included. The prevalence of PIPs was identified by applying the 2012-Beers criteria list.Results. A total of 103 420 patients, mean age 74.0 years (standard deviation 6.7), 57.1% female, were included in the analysis. The number of PIPs identified was 562 852 in 71 206 patients (68.9%). The most common medicines inappropriately prescribed were oestrogen (oral and patch formulations only) (12.4%), meloxicam (7.3%), amitriptyline and combinations thereof (6.5%), diclofenac (6.4%), ibuprofen (6.1%), alprazolam (5.3%), meprobamate and combinations thereof (5.0%), sliding-scale insulin (3.3%), amiodarone (3.1%) and doxazosin (2.6%). Medicines were inappropriately prescribed to women statistically significantly more often than to men (1.9:1; p<0.001), although this difference was not of practical significance (Cramér’s V=0.06).Conclusions. Medicine use in older patients must be appropriate and evaluated regularly. According to explicit criteria, PIPs were found to be common in older patients registered on the database. Monitoring of PIPs may increase the quality of prescribing, but explicit criteria cannot substitute for clinical judgement based on the individual patient
