Neutrino and axion bounds from the globular cluster M5 (NGC 5904)
The red-giant branch (RGB) in globular clusters is extended to larger
brightness if the degenerate helium core loses too much energy in "dark
channels." Based on a large set of archival observations, we provide
high-precision photometry for the Galactic globular cluster M5 (NGC 5904),
allowing for a detailed comparison between the observed tip of the RGB with
predictions based on contemporary stellar evolution theory. In particular, we
derive 95% confidence limits of on the
axion-electron coupling and (Bohr
magneton ) on a neutrino dipole moment, based on a detailed
analysis of statistical and systematic uncertainties. The cluster distance is

We present explicit closed-form expressions for the general group-theoretical
factor appearing in the alpha-topology of a high-temperature expansion of
SO(n)-symmetric lattice models. This object, which is closely related to

The philosopher as artist: Ludwig Wittgenstein seen through Edoardo Paolozzi
In this article I argue that the strong fascination that Wittgenstein has had for artists cannot be explained primarily by the content of his work, and in particular not by his sporadic observation on aesthetics, but rather by stylistic features of his work formal aspects of his writing. Edoardo Paolozzi’s testimony shows that artists often had a feeling of acquaintance or familiarity with the philosopher, which I think is due to stylistic features of his work, such as
the colloquial tone in which Wittgenstein shares his observation with the reader, but also the lack of long-winded arguments or explanations. In the concluding part I suggest that we can read Wittgenstein’s artworks of a specific kind: as philosophical works of art
Acquired heart block: A possible complication of patent ductus arteriosus in a preterm infant
A large patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) is a frequently encountered clinical problem in extremely low birth weight (ELBW) infants. It leads to an increased pulmonary blood flow and in a decreased or reversed diastolic flow in the systemic circulation, resulting in complications. Here we report a possible complication of PDA not previously published. On day 8 of life, a male ELBW infant (birth weight 650 g) born at a gestational age of 23 weeks and 3 days developed an atrioventricular block (AV block). The heart rate dropped from 168/min to 90/min, and the ECG showed a Wenckebach second-degree AV block and intraventricular conduction disturbances. Echocardiography demonstrated a PDA with a large left-to-right shunt and large left atrium and left ventricle with high contractility. Within several minutes after surgical closure of the PDA, the heart rate increased, and after 30 min the AV block had improved to a 1: 1 conduction ratio. Echocardiography after 2 h revealed a significant decrease of the left ventricular and atrial dimensions. Within 12 h, the AV block completely reversed together with the intraventricular conduction disturbances. We suggest that PDA with a large left-to-right shunt and left ventricular volume overload may lead to an AV block in an ELBW infant. Surgical closure of the PDA may be indicated. Recombination dramatically speeds up evolution of finite populations
We study the role of recombination, as practiced by genetically-competent
bacteria, in speeding up Darwinian evolution. This is done by adding a new
process to a previously-studied Markov model of evolution on a smooth fitness
landscape; this new process allows alleles to be exchanged with those in the
surrounding medium. Our results, both numerical and analytic, indicate that for
a wide range of intermediate population sizes, recombination dramatically
speeds up the evolutionary advance
How to measure patent thickets – a novel approach
The existing literature identifies patent thickets indirectly. In this paper we propose a novel measure based on patent citations which allows us to measure the density of patent thickets directly. We discuss the algorithm which generates the measure and present descriptive results validating it. Moreover, we identify technology areas which are particularly impacted by patent thickets
Transient Effects during Dynamic Operation of a Wall‐Cooled Fixed‐Bed Reactor for CO₂ Methanation
Cuspons, peakons and regular gap solitons between three dispersion curves
A general wave model with the cubic nonlinearity is introduced to describe a
situation when the linear dispersion relation has three branches, which would
intersect in the absence of linear couplings between the three waves. Actually,
the system contains two waves with a strong linear coupling between them, to
which a third wave is then coupled. This model has two gaps in its linear
spectrum. Realizations of this model can be made in terms of temporal or
spatial evolution of optical fields in, respectively, a planar waveguide or a
bulk-layered medium resembling a photonic-crystal fiber. Another physical
system described by the same model is a set of three internal wave modes in a
density-stratified fluid. A nonlinear analysis is performed for solitons which
have zero velocity in the reference frame in which the group velocity of the
third wave vanishes. Disregarding the self-phase modulation (SPM) term in the
equation for the third wave, we find two coexisting families of solitons:
regular ones, which may be regarded as a smooth deformation of the usual gap
solitons in a two-wave system, and cuspons with a singularity in the first
derivative at their center. Even in the limit when the linear coupling of the
third wave to the first two vanishes, the soliton family remains drastically
different from that in the linearly uncoupled system; in this limit, regular
solitons whose amplitude exceeds a certain critical value are replaced by
peakons. While the regular solitons, cuspons, and peakons are found in an exact
analytical form, their stability is tested numerically, which shows that they
all may be stable. If the SPM terms are retained, we find that there again
coexist two different families of generic stable soliton solutions, namely,

Characterization of the Ca2+-gated and voltage-dependent k+-channel slo-1 of nematodes and its interaction with emodepside
The cyclooctadepsipeptide emodepside and its parent compound PF1022A are broad-spectrum nematicidal drugs which are able to eliminate nematodes resistant to other anthelmintics. The mode of action of cyclooctadepsipeptides is only partially understood, but involves the latrophilin Lat-1 receptor and the voltage- and calcium-activated potassium channel Slo-1. Genetic evidence suggests that emodepside exerts its anthelmintic activity predominantly through Slo-1. Indeed, slo-1 deficient Caenorhabditis elegans strains are completely emodepside resistant. However, direct effects of emodepside on Slo-1 have not been reported and these channels have only been characterized for C. elegans and related Strongylida. Molecular and bioinformatic analyses identified full-length Slo-1 cDNAs of Ascaris suum, Parascaris equorum, Toxocara canis, Dirofilaria immitis, Brugia malayi, Onchocerca gutturosa and Strongyloides ratti. Two paralogs were identified in the trichocephalids Trichuris muris, Trichuris suis and Trichinella spiralis. Several splice variants encoding truncated channels were identified in Trichuris spp. Slo-1 channels of trichocephalids form a monophyletic group, showing that duplication occurred after the divergence of Enoplea and Chromadorea. To explore the function of a representative protein, C. elegans Slo-1a was expressed in Xenopus laevis oocytes and studied in electrophysiological (voltage-clamp) experiments. Incubation of oocytes with 1-10 µM emodepside caused significantly increased currents over a wide range of step potentials in the absence of experimentally increased intracellular Ca2+, suggesting that emodepside directly opens C. elegans Slo-1a. Emodepside wash-out did not reverse the effect and the Slo-1 inhibitor verruculogen was only effective when applied before, but not after, emodepside. The identification of several splice variants and paralogs in some parasitic nematodes suggests that there are substantial differences in channel properties among species. Most importantly, this study showed for the first time that emodepside directly opens a Slo-1 channel, significantly improving the understanding of the mode of action of this drug class
Role of Spin Momentum Current in Magnetic Non-Local Damping of Ultrathin Film Structures
Non-local damping was investigated by Ferromagnetic Resonance (FMR) using ultrathin magnetic single and double layer structures prepared by Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE). The double layer structures show magnetic damping which is caused by spin transport across a normal metal spacer (N). In double layer structures a thin Fe layer, F1, was separated from a thick Fe layer, F2, by a Au(001) spacer. The interface magnetic anisotropies separated the FMR fields of F1 and F2 by a big margin allowing one to investigate FMR in F1 while F2 had a negligible angle of precession, and vice versa. The Fe films in magnetic double layers acquire non-local interface Gilbert damping. It will be shown that the precessing magnetic moments act as spin pumps and spin sinks. This concept was tested by investigating the FMR linewidth around an accidental crossover of the resonance fields for the layers F1 and F2. There is another possible mechanism for non-local damping which is based on a "breathing Fermi surface" of the spacer. The temperature dependence of the non-local damping indicates that this mechanism is weak in Au spacers. Surprisingly the Au spacer acts as an additional impedance for the spin pump mechanism. Finally, it will be shown that electron-electron correlations in a Pd spacer can lead to a significant enhancement of the non-local damping
