Subordinates' Imperatives in a Faculty Meeting: Evidence of Social Inequality and Collegiality

Imperatives are ubiquitous, and may be interesting to analyze when deployed by subordinates especially in an institutional talk such as faculty meetings. This paper was built on our earlier paper, where it describes the pragmalinguistic structures of Tagalog imperatives and the local academic conditions that hastened the production of subordinate’s imperatives for the chair of the meeting to do something. This paper is distinct because it reports and describes the proofs of social inequality and collegiality invoked during the meeting. Five meetings formed the corpus of this study. Drawing on the interface of Critical Discourse Analysis and Conversation Analysis, results show that subordinate’s imperatives are evidence of social inequality because of the subordinate’s higher epistemic knowledge compared to the Chair of the meeting. The Chair wrestles with the subordinates through a number of exasperated prosodic and paralinguistic elements. Meanwhile, subordinate’s imperatives are evidence of collegiality with the shift to positive prosodic, paralinguistic, and embodied cues of the Chair and the subordinate. Overall, the discourse of imperatives is a depiction of the sharing of members’ power, knowledge, and other socio-pragmatic local academic conditions. There is also a push and pull of use and abuse of power and collegiality. Toward the end, we propose a longitudinal case to widen the scope and instances of imperatives

Subordinate’s Imperatives in Faculty Meetings: Pragmalinguistic Affordances in Tagalog and Local Academic Conditions

Subordinate’s imperatives are generally known to be a sort of a deviant speech act, especially when employed for a person in authority to do something. This paper explores two major dimensions that underpin the possible forbearance of the subordinate’s imperatives. Firstly, it is shown that the Tagalog basic imperative has pragmalinguistic properties that may be followed or broken based on some socio-pragmalinguistic affordances. Secondly, a number of contextual factors such as power, distance, and ranking, including the Filipino cultural and academic orientation of pakikisama or smooth interpersonal relationships are described. The study employed Conversation Analysis and socio-pragmatic analytic approach. The imperatives came from five meetings from three departments in a private university in Manila, Philippines. The meetings lasted for 5 hours and 50 minutes. Results show Tagalog Basic Imperative has pragmalinguistic properties that may be followed or broken based on the following likelihood: the awkwardness, indirectness and insincerity of mitigated imperatives; and the level of urgency for the hearer to do something. The giver’s socio-pragmatic conditions also hasten the production of imperatives. These results draw into the conclusion that local conditions are negotiated in during turns at talk. Within the sphere of a faculty meeting, subordinate’s imperatives are socio-pragmalinguistically legitimate, acceptable and non-deviant. Subordinate’s imperatives play an indispensable pragmatic role in the realization of the purpose of the meeting. Although the analyses are parochially based on Tagalog, implications of these microscopic findings bear out cross-linguistic, universal and cross-cultural relevance

CORRELATING WRITER’S BLOCK AND ESL LEARNERS’ WRITING QUALITY

    Get PDF
Despite the importance of writing in the language learners’ development, there are difficulties faced by English as a Second Language (ESL) learners that stem from various factors. One of them is the presence of writer’s block that could affect writing quality. Therefore, this study aims to describe writer’s block, along with a statistically-laden analysis of the possible correlation between the blocking experiences of 55 Filipino ESL learners and the levels of easability and readability of the essays they had written.  This research employed a descriptive-correlational design using The Questionnaire in Identifying Writer’s Block (QIWB) to gauge the extent of occurrence of writer’s block and the Coh-Metrix Common Core Text Easability and Readability Assessor (hereafter Coh-Metrix T.E.R.A.), an online computational tool, to measure the levels of easability and readability of the essays. The result shows that the learners generally experienced writer’s block, and their essays collectively showed high levels of easability on the basis of narrativity, referential cohesion, and deep cohesion. However, the essays were low in syntactic simplicity and word concreteness, while the level of readability computed exceeded that of the reading ability of 10th-grade learners. Test of correlation revealed that there exists negligible relationship between writer’s block and the overall easability and readability levels of the essays, though a significant but a weak relationship was documented between lateness and word concreteness and with premature editing and deep cohesion, respectively

Question-declaration coupling in a university meeting talk: Discourse of social inequality and collegiality

Conversation Analysis (CA) deals with the description of the microscopic and corpus-driven data in an ‘unmotivating looking’ analytical fashion. As long as there are new, interesting, or deviant features from the data, they are always worthy of a micro analysis. For this paper, we report the ‘question-declaration coupling’ in meeting talks as a new feature and explicate it through the discourse of social inequality and collegiality in the academe. The data came from a total of five recorded meetings from three departments, such as Education, Arts Science, and Social Work, in a private university in Manila, Philippines. The meetings lasted for five hours and 50 minutes. From adjacency pairs of question-answer, the sequential pattern shows that the questions deserve conspicuous answers from the subordinates, but the Chair automatically couples them with declarative sentences and other utterances that serve as continuers. The pattern is categorised as a strategic turn-suppressing mechanism to hold back the members from possibly challenging the existing policies of the institution. It is also seen as a strategic mechanism to deprive the members of extending the litanies of possible counter-arguments. From a positive perspective, we argue that it is through the air of social inequality and collegiality that people are able to know their boundaries in an ongoing interaction. Toward the end, we state the implications of the results for teaching and learning socio-pragmalinguistics. We also recommend future cross-linguistic comparisons for these microscopic features under study, considering the small corpus of this study

The enteroparasitosis and their damages to one health represent a public health severe problem. One of the main forms of transmission occurs through water and contaminated foods by protozoa as well as helminthes, thus food h andlers play an important role in the contamination process. This work has as a goal to investigate the occurence of enteroparasites in handlers, working in shops situated at Federal University of Paraíba as well as trace an enteroparasitological profile o f them. The study counted on a sample of 58 food handlers, being developed in 3 steps. During the first step, it was applied an epidemiological form. In the second, the fecal material was analyzed by Hoffmann, Pon and Janner’s techniques and Blagg method. The third step consisted in delivering and forwarding the reports to a basic health unit. Through coproparasitological exams, it was found that 70.69% of the investigated ones revealed positivity to at least one parasite species as well as intestinal comme nsals. This fact itself reflects in the sanitation, presence or not of sewage, consumed water quality and the hygiene habits in which these employees are exposed. The major occurrence of individuals with enteroparasites was observed in females, representin g 80% (32) of a 40 women total. The parasitological profile found was: Endolimax nana (62,7%), Entamoeba coli (15,52%), Ascaris lumbricoides (5,17%), Entamoeba histolytica/E.dispar (1,72%) and Giardia lamblia (1,72%). Therefore, the creation of educational programs which aim the guidance of appropriate practice concerning personal hygiene and food handling, is essential since these measures can decrease the risks of contamination as well as the spread of enteroparasites.

    Get PDF
The search for inclusion in the contemporary world has grown in the most diverse social spheres. This is no different in education, where new ways of promoting education for students with disabilities, called inclusive education, are discussed. In order for this inclusive education to take place, Federal Laws provide for its implementation, as the Federal Constitution of 1988, in its art. 6, in addition to the Basic Federal Law for Education, the LDB - Law of the Guidelines and Bases of Brazilian Education (Law 9.394 / 96). These and many other laws address the necessity and obligation of such inclusive teaching. In contrast, this inclusive education still has few adequate methodologies for effective teaching for these students with disabilities. Within these methodologies, we highlight tactile cartography, an educational practice geared towards the teaching of Cartography and Geography in general, for students with total visual impairment and / or low vision. Tactile cartography is based on the encounter between Cartography, Education and Geography, and it is necessary to understand the three parts to understand tactile cartography. Using tactile maps, which are representations of geographic contents, tactile cartography aims to assist people with visual impairment in the orientation, location and analysis of geographic contents, whether physical or social. In order to propose this inclusion, this work has as main objective to reduce the difficulties of students with visual impairment in the school environment, strengthening their understanding and bringing the student closer to Geography and its contents, through tactile cartography. The research was developed at the Rodrigo Otávio Municipal Elementary School, located in the Bairros dos Estados, in the city of João Pessoa / PB, with students with visual impairment of the 5th grade enrolled regularly in the school. In this way, tactile maps of the contents of the textbook were constructed, following the assumptions of Almeida (2011) to help the students during the academic period. In this context, we sought to understand the effectiveness of this educational practice in regular education and to ponder its importance in the training of students with disabilities in the initial years. As a result, it was noticed that the tactile cartography, when applied in the correct way, helps the students' comprehension, enabling the visualization of that map through the touch, making Geography teaching effective and more complete.
