    Non Gaussian extrema counts for CMB maps

    In the context of the geometrical analysis of weakly non Gaussian CMB maps, the 2D differential extrema counts as functions of the excursion set threshold is derived from the full moments expansion of the joint probability distribution of an isotropic random field, its gradient and invariants of the Hessian. Analytic expressions for these counts are given to second order in the non Gaussian correction, while a Monte Carlo method to compute them to arbitrary order is presented. Matching count statistics to these estimators is illustrated on fiducial non-Gaussian "Planck" data.Comment: 4 pages, 1 figur

    Secondary schooling and rural youth transitions in Lesotho and Zimbabwe

    Based on case studies centred on two rural secondary schools in Lesotho and Zimbabwe, this paper examines the gendered impacts of schooling on young people’s transitions to adulthood. School attendance is shown, first, to disrupt the conventional pathways to adulthood: young people attending school may leave home sooner than they otherwise would, and take responsibility for their day-to-day survival, while marriage and childbearing are often delayed. More significantly, secondary schooling reflects, and contributes to, a growing sense that adulthood itself is not fixed. An alternative version of adulthood is promoted through schools in which formal sector employment is central. Yet while young people are encouraged to opt for, and work towards, this goal, only a minority are able to obtain paid employment. The apparent possibility of determining one’s own lifecourse serves to cast the majority of young people as failures in their transitions to adulthood

    Cavitation-induced force transition in confined viscous liquids under traction

    We perform traction experiments on simple liquids highly confined between parallel plates. At small separation rates, we observe a simple response corresponding to a convergent Poiseuille flow. Dramatic changes in the force response occur at high separation rates, with the appearance of a force plateau followed by an abrupt drop. By direct observation in the course of the experiment, we show that cavitation accounts for these features which are reminiscent of the utmost complex behavior of adhesive films under traction.     SCC: A Service Centered Calculus

    We seek for a small set of primitives that might serve as a basis for formalising and programming service oriented applications over global computers. As an outcome of this study we introduce here SCC, a process calculus that features explicit notions of service definition, service invocation and session handling. Our proposal has been influenced by Orc, a programming model for structured orchestration of services, but the SCC’s session handling mechanism allows for the definition of structured interaction protocols, more complex than the basic request-response provided by Orc. We present syntax and operational semantics of SCC and a number of simple but nontrivial programming examples that demonstrate flexibility of the chosen set of primitives. A few encodings are also provided to relate our proposal with existing ones

    Session-Based Programming for Parallel Algorithms: Expressiveness and Performance

    This paper investigates session programming and typing of benchmark examples to compare productivity, safety and performance with other communications programming languages. Parallel algorithms are used to examine the above aspects due to their extensive use of message passing for interaction, and their increasing prominence in algorithmic research with the rising availability of hardware resources such as multicore machines and clusters. We contribute new benchmark results for SJ, an extension of Java for type-safe, binary session programming, against MPJ Express, a Java messaging system based on the MPI standard. In conclusion, we observe that (1) despite rich libraries and functionality, MPI remains a low-level API, and can suffer from commonly perceived disadvantages of explicit message passing such as deadlocks and unexpected message types, and (2) the benefits of high-level session abstraction, which has significant impact on program structure to improve readability and reliability, and session type-safety can greatly facilitate the task of communications programming whilst retaining competitive performance

    Color Evaporation and Elastic ΄\Upsilon Photoproduction at DESY HERA

    The diffractive photoproduction of vector mesons is usually described considering the two-gluon (Pomeron) exchange, non-diagonal parton distributions and the contribution of the real part to the cross section. In this letter we analyze the diffractive photoproduction of the ΄\Upsilon at HERA using an alternative model, the Color Evaporation Model (CEM), where the cross section is simply determined by the boson-gluon cross section and an assumption for the production of the colorless state. We verify that, similarly to the J/ΚJ/\Psi case, the HERA data for this process can be well described by the CEM. Moreover, we propose the analyzes of the ratio R=σ΄/σJ/ΚR = \sigma_{\Upsilon} / \sigma_{J/\Psi} to discriminate between the distinct approaches.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in PRD (Brief Reports

    A very-front-end ADC for the electromagnetic calorimeter of the International Linear Collider

    A 10-bits pipeline Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC) is introduced in this paper and the measurements carried out on prototypes produced in a 0.35 ”m CMOS technology are presented. This ADC is a building block of the very-front-end electronics dedicated to the electromagnetic calorimeter of the International Linear Collider (ILC). Based on a 1.5-bit resolution per stage architecture, it reaches the 10-bits precision at a sampling rate of 4 MSamples/s with a consumption of 35 mW. Integral and Differential Non-Linearity obtained are respectively within ±1 LSB and ±0.6 LSB, and the measured noise is 0.47 LSB at 68% C.L. The performance obtained conïŹrms that the pipeline architecture ADC is suitable for the Ecal readout requirement

    Control of sucker growth on Vitis vinifera cv. Merlot with NAA derivatives

    Six NAA esters (three known, three newly synthesized) were tested for the grapevine sucker control. Good results were achieved by E4, E5, E9 (8 % concentration) but E3 presented solubility problems. Suckering was reduced also in the second year, without repeating the treatment
