    Amplitude-Driven-Adaptive-Neighbourhood Filtering of High-Resolution Pol-InSAR Information

International audienceIn this paper a new method for fltering coherency matrices issued from Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) polarimetric interferometric data is presented. For each pixel of the interferogram, an adaptive neighborhood is determined by a region growing technique driven exclusively by the amplitude image information. All the available amplitude images of the interferometric couple are fused in the region growing process to ensure the stationarity hypothesis of the derived statistical population. In addition, for preserving local stationarity requirement of the interferogram, a phase compensation step is performed. Afterwards, all the pixels within the obtained adaptive neighborhood are complex averaged to yield the fltered values of the polarimetric and interferometric coherency matrices. The method has been tested on airborne high-resolution polarimetric interferometric SAR images (Oberpfaffenhofen area - German Space Agency). For comparison purposes, the standard phase compensated fixed multi-look flter and the linear adaptive coherence flter proposed by Lee at al. were also implemented. Both subjective and objective performance analysis, including coherence edge detection, ROC graph and bias reduction tables, recommends the proposed algorithm as a powerful post-processing POL-InSAR tool

Contactless magnetic brake for automotive applications

    Get PDF
Road and rail vehicles and aircraft rely mainly or solely on friction brakes. These brakes pose several problems, especially in hybrid vehicles: significant wear, fading, complex and slow actuation, lack of fail-safe features, increased fuel consumption due to power assistance, and requirement for anti-lock controls. To solve these problems, a contactless magnetic brake has been developed. This concept includes a novel flux-shunting structure to control the excitation flux generated by permanent magnets. This brake is wear-free, less-sensitive to temperature than friction brakes, has fast and simple actuation, and has a reduced sensitivity to wheel-lock. The present dissertation includes an introduction to friction braking, a theory of eddy-current braking, analytical and numerical models of the eddy-current brake, its excitation and power generation, record of experimental validation, investigation and simulation of the integration of the brake in conventional and hybrid vehicles

DEM error retrieval by analyzing time series of differential interferograms

    Get PDF
International audience2-pass Differential Synthetic Aperture Radar Interferometry (D-InSAR) processing have been successfully used by the scientific community to derive velocity fields. Nevertheless, a precise Digital Elevation Model (DEM) is necessary to remove the topographic component from the interferograms. This letter presents a novel method to detect and retrieve DEM errors by analyzing time series of differential interferograms. The principle of the method is based on the comparison of fringe patterns with the perpendicular baseline. First, a mathematical description of the algorithm is exposed. Then, the algorithm is applied on a series of four one-day ERS-1/2 interferograms

Using Quad‐Pol and Single‐Pol RADARSAT‐2 Data for Monitoring Cold Alpine and Outlet Antarctic Glaciers

    Get PDF
International audienceThis paper presents some applications of the Maximum Likelihood (ML) texture tracking on displacement estimation of some alpine and antarctic glaciers surfaces. This method is adapted to the statistical characteristic of the new High Resolution (HR) Polarimetric SAR (Pol- SAR) data. The ML texture tracking method is firstly reminded and a statistical model of HR PolSAR data is explained. The main part of this paper is focused on the application of this method on glaciers monitoring. Three different glaciers have been chosen to test the algorithm: a cold alpine glacier, a temperate alpine glacier and an outlet antarctic glacier. The accuracy and limits of the method are highlighted in each case and results application is discussed

Segmentation and Classification of Polarimetric SAR Data based on the KummerU Distribution

International audienceThinner spatial features can be observed from the high resolution of newly available spaceborne and airborne SAR images. Heterogeneous clutter models should be used to model the covariance matrix because each resolution cell contains only a small number of scatterers. In this paper, we focus on the use of a Fisher probability density function (pdf) to model the SAR clutter. First, the benefit of using such a pdf is exposed. Covariance matrix statistics are then analyzed in details. For a Fisher distributed texture, the covariance matrix follows a KummerU pdf. Asymptotic cases of this pdf are presented. Finally, the KummerU pdf is implemented in both hierarchical segmentation and classification algorithms. Segmentation and classification results are shown on both synthetic and real data
