Lessons from Research on Peace Education in Israel/Palestine

Despite the relative uniqueness of peace education in contexts of intractable conflict, research on peace education carried out in the context of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict can be instructive, to a greater or lesser extent, in other contexts. Six research based lessons are presented: (1) The short life of peace educations positive effects and so the need for continuous reinforcement; (2) ways of restoring the eroded effects; (3) the benefits of learning about another conflict; (4) the differential effects of peace education on different groups of participants; (5) the limitations of peace education; and (6) joint projects with common important goals as an alternative approach to peace education. In addition, two common challenges facing peace education and other kinds of programs are presented: the challenge of maintaining the attained positive effects, and the challenge of spreading the effects to wider realms of society

Simplicity in Visual Representation: A Semiotic Approach

Simplicity, as an ideal in the design of visual representations, has not received systematic attention. High-level guidelines are too general, and low-level guidelines too ad hoc, too numerous, and too often incompatible, to serve in a particular design situation. This paper reviews notions of visual simplicity in the literature within the analytical framework provided by Charles Morris' communication model, specifically, his trichotomy of communication levels—the syntactic, the semantic, and the pragmatic. Las diversas influencias de la tecnología en desarrollo de la mente

This article focuses on five kinds of effects of technology on the mind of an individual: (a) the creation of metaphors, (b) the stimulation of new distinctions, (c) the type of partnership with technology, (d) the cultivation of skills, and (e) the internalization of technological tools and modes of representation. The variety of effects elaborated here differ along three dimensions: the source of the effect, the role of the individual in producing the effect, and the degree of the effect dependence on content. The variations of the different effects along these three dimensions might bring to new metaphors through indirect partnerships with technology, to the discovery of new cognitive distinctions thanks to a direct and mindful use of technology, and to the creation of new intellectual associations and re-organizations by the use of technological tools that allow to perform not only the same tasks more efficently but also to perform new tasks and new cognitive operations. The implications of judging the developmental impact of technology will be disscussed.El presente artículo trata sobre cinco clases de efectos de la tecnología en el desarrollo de la mente: a) la creación de metáforas, b) la estimulación de nuevas diferenciaciones, c) la clase de asociación con la tecnología, d) el cultivo de habilidades y e) la intenalización de instrumentos tecnológicos y representaciones. La variedad de los efectos discutidos difieren según tres dimensiones: el origen del efecto, el rol del individuo en producir el efecto y el grado en que el efecto depende del contenido. Las variaciones de estos diferentes efectos según estas tres dimensiones permitirán la creación de nuevas metáforas a través de una asociación indirecta con la tecnología, el descubrimiento de nuevas diferenciaciones cognitivas gracias al uso directo y mentalmente comprometido de la tecnología y la creación de nuevas asociaciones intelectuales y reorganizaciones a partir del uso de la herramienta tecnológica que posibilite no sólo la realización de tareas habituales en menos tiempo y con mayor eficacia, sino la realización de nuevas tareas y de nuevas operaciones cognitivas. Este tercer tipo de influencias, que potencian por asociación, poseen un efecto transferib1e. Las implicaciones de juzgar el impacto de la tecnología a nivel evolutivo serán discutidas
