Easy Ways to Use Universal Design In Business Courses

    Get PDF
The universal design for learning is an approach to designing curriculum and instruction to serve the needs of all students, including those with disabilities. The nine principles of universal design for learning are presented along with examples of course design, instructional materials, or teaching methods for business courses. Many of the examples are simple, easy changes for instructors that can make courses more flexible, inclusive, and accessible

    Instructional Case: J & S Bicycle Shop

    Get PDF
This case is designed to develop and assess critical thinking and decision making skills in the presence of conflicting goals. Strategic/critical thinking and decision modeling are identified in the AICPA’s Core Competency Framework. The case setting is a choice among alternative inventory methods for a small business that is seeking a loan to finance expansion. Students are instructed to justify their choice of inventory method based upon information found in a list of documents. These documents contain both relevant and irrelevant information. Although the inventory calculations are simple, neither they nor the method chosen are the focus of the case. Students need to evaluate the evidence in the documents, and no single recommendation is uniquely correct. Students’ written responses are evaluated on how well the recommendations are developed and supported by the evidence

A Survey of a Selected Public Group in the Vinton Community School District With Implications for the Improvement of Certain Educational Services in the Senior High School

The objectives of this study were (1) to determine what a selected group considered to be the major role of a high school education: (2) to determine some attitudes of this public relative to certain educational services being offered in the Vinton High School; (3) to determine the feelings of the group concerning the need for changing certain educational services in the Vinton High School; and (4) to determine some attitudes of the select group concerning what forces have produced change and the best way to bring about educational change in the Vinton High School. The principal method used was a 24 item questionnaire survey distributed to 296 selected adults. This group consisted of the parents of all eleventh and twelfth graders in the Vinton (Iowa) senior high in 1973-74; the thirty-three teachers in the high school; the high school principal., the school superintendent and the curriculum coordinator; and the five school board members. Two hundred five forms were returned for a 69.3 percent return. The significant findings were as follows: 1. The public felt the major purpose of a high school education was to prepare youth for the world in which they will one day be living. 2. The people in the Vinton community were slightly in favor of disciplining unruly students rather than trying to understand them. Eighty-two and nine-tenths percent of the surveyed group indicated that they wanted one type of discipline or another. 3. A combination of teacher reports on student progress, test scores, parent-teacher conferences, and the pass-fail system was the majority response to the question What would you like to see in place of letter grades? 4. A total of 177 people (86 percent) felt the main duty of the counselor was to help students with their problems. 5. The public generally was opposed to the initiation of new and innovative services in the Vinton High School System. 6. Teachers received high rank (67. 3 percent) for their efforts in trying to change with the times. 7. An overwhelming majority of the respondents wanted classroom discussion on controversial topics such as black student rights, sex hygiene, contraceptives, and drugs. 8. Parents do not want to be involved in choosing courses, class conduct, grading, and discipline, nor do they want student involvement except in the area of what courses will be taught. 9. A majority of the public (76.1 percent) felt that changes in the Vinton school were the result of the change in our way of living and the structure of our society. They also felt that students have changed and now see the world from a different point of view than did students five years ago. 10. The select group favored the idea of bringing about change in education through four-way communication between parents, students, teachers, and administrators

pEDM: Online-Forecasting for Smart Energy Analytics

    Get PDF
Continuous balancing of energy demand and supply is a fundamental prerequisite for the stability of energy grids and requires accurate forecasts of electricity consumption and production at any point in time. Today's Energy Data Management (EDM) systems already provide accurate predictions, but typically employ a very time-consuming and inflexible forecasting process. However, emerging trends such as intra-day trading and an increasing share of renewable energy sources need a higher forecasting efficiency. Additionally, the wide variety of applications in the energy domain pose different requirements with respect to runtime and accuracy and thus, require flexible control of the forecasting process. To solve this issue, we introduce our novel online forecasting process as part of our EDM system called pEDM. The online forecasting process rapidly provides forecasting results and iteratively refines them over time. Thus, we avoid long calculation times and allow applications to adapt the process to their needs. Our evaluation shows that our online forecasting process offers a very efficient and flexible way of providing forecasts to the requesting applications

A proposal for implementing short-term congestion management market in distribution networks

    Get PDF
The article provides a proposal for implementing a short-term congestion management market for a distribution system operator’s congestion problem. Since congestion management market utilization for congestion management requires at least three stakeholders’ interactions, including the distribution system operator, market operator, and flexibility service provider, the article discusses the interactions and proposes how the market utilization can be implemented in practice. The paper presents the market design and its implementation details, including defining and calculating flexibility need attributes. The conceptual work done in the article could be used as a guideline for actual congestion management market implementations; in addition, it can be used for simulating various scenarios in the future, enabling researchers to study issues related to congestion management.acceptedVersionPeer reviewe

Towards a framework for modelling market-based congestion management in distribution grids

    Get PDF
Congestion management using dedicated congestion management (CM) markets could extend the grid operators CM toolbox and can be one way to unlock small-scale flexibility potentials. The presented framework allows to study the effects of operational CM markets and simulates the operational planning of small-scale flexibility providers that are marketed by aggregators as well as the grid operation planning of grid operators under consideration of CM markets. Based on the optimized schedules of flexibility providers, the grid operators perform grid analyses and determine current-based congestions. These congestions are then relieved by determining optimal countermeasures using flexibility from the local CM market as well as the intraday market. The application of the presented framework shows its effectiveness in relieving congestions as well as a varying flexibility usage depending on the grid structure.acceptedVersionPeer reviewe

Esophageal Clearance Patterns in Normal Older Adults as Documented with Videofluoroscopic Esophagram

    Get PDF
Normal esophageal bolus transport in asymptomatic healthy older adults has not been well defined, potentially leading to ambiguity in differentiating esophageal swallowing patterns of dysphagic and healthy individuals. This pilot study of 24 young (45–64 years) and old (65+years) men and women was designed to assess radiographic esophageal bolus movement patterns in healthy adults using videofluoroscopic recording. Healthy, asymptomatic adults underwent videofluoroscopic esophagram to evaluate for the presence of ineffective esophageal clearance, namely, intraesophageal stasis and intraesophageal reflux. Intraesophageal stasis and intraesophageal reflux were visualized radiographically in these normal subjects. Intraesophageal stasis occurred significantly more frequently with semisolid (96%) compared with liquid (16%) barium, suggesting that a variety of barium consistencies, as opposed to only the traditional fluids, would better define the spectrum of esophageal transport. Intraesophageal reflux was observed more frequently in older males than in their younger counterparts. The rates of intraesophageal stasis and intraesophageal reflux were potentially high given that successive bolus presentations were spaced 10 seconds apart. These findings suggest a need for a more comprehensive definition regarding the range of normal esophageal bolus transport to (a) prevent misdiagnosis of dysphagia and (b) to enhance generalization to functional eating, which involves solid foods in addition to liquids

Minimizing attosecond CEP jitter by carrier envelope phase tuning

    Get PDF
Minimizing the CEP jitter of isolated attosecond pulses (IAP) will be important for future applications. This jitter is experimentally and theoretically investigated and can be minimized when the driving pulse is near its Fourier limit but with slightly negative chirp. Thus, understanding and characterization of the CEP jitter of IAPs is a first step towards exact control of the electric field of IAP pulses
