Characterising University WLANs within Eduroam Context
The eduroam initiative is assuming an ever growing relevance in providing a secure, worldwide roaming access within the university WLAN context. Although several studies have focused on educational WLAN traffic characterisation, the increasing variety of devices, mobility scenarios and user applications, motivate assessing the effective use of eduroam in order to sustain consistent network planning and deployment. Based on recent WLAN traffic traces collected at the University of Minho (Portugal) and University of Vigo (Spain), the present work contributes for identifying and characterising patterns of user behaviour regarding, for instance, the location and activity sector of users. The results of data analysis quantify the impact of network access location on the number of associated users, on the number and duration of sessions and corresponding traffic volumes. The results also illustrate to what extent users take advantage of mobility in the WLAN. Complementing the analysis on a monthly basis, a fine grain study of WLAN traffic is provided through the identification of users' behaviour and patterns in small timescales
Oxygen-sensitive 3He-MRI in bronchiolitis obliterans after lung transplantation
Oxygen-sensitive 3He-MRI was studied for the detection of differences in intrapulmonary oxygen partial pressure (pO2) between patients with normal lung transplants and those with bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome (BOS). Using software developed in-house, oxygen-sensitive 3He-MRI datasets from patients with normal lung grafts (n = 8) and with BOS (n = 6) were evaluated quantitatively. Datasets were acqiured on a 1.5-T system using a spoiled gradient echo pulse sequence. Underlying diseases were pulmonary emphysema (n = 10 datasets) and fibrosis (n = 4). BOS status was verified by pulmonary function tests. Additionally, 3He-MRI was assessed blindedly for ventilation defects. Median intrapulmonary pO2 in patients with normal lung grafts was 146 mbar compared with 108 mbar in patients with BOS. Homogeneity of pO2 distribution was greater in normal grafts (standard deviation pO2 34 versus 43 mbar). Median oxygen decrease rate during breath hold was higher in unaffected patients (−1.75 mbar/s versus −0.38 mbar/s). Normal grafts showed fewer ventilation defects (5% versus 28%, medians). Oxygen-sensitive 3He-MRI appears capable of demonstrating differences of intrapulmonary pO2 between normal lung grafts and grafts affected by BOS. Oxygen-sensitive 3He-MRI may add helpful regional information to other diagnostic techniques for the assessment and follow-up of lung transplant recipients

Long-term bed-rest is used to simulate the effect of spaceflight on the human body and test different kinds of countermeasures. The 2nd Berlin BedRest Study (BBR2-2) tested the efficacy of whole-body vibration in addition to high-load resisitance exercise in preventing bone loss during bed-rest. Here we present the protocol of the study and discuss its implementation. Twenty-four male subjects underwent 60-days of six-degree head down tilt bed-rest and were randomised to an inactive control group (CTR), a high-load resistive exercise group (RE) or a high-load resistive exercise with whole-body vibration group (RVE). Subsequent to events in the course of the study (e.g. subject withdrawal), 9 subjects participated in the CTR-group, 7 in the RVE-group and 8 (7 beyond bed-rest day-30) in the RE-group. Fluid intake, urine output and axiallary temperature increased during bed-rest (p or = .17). Body weight changes differed between groups (p < .0001) with decreases in the CTR-group, marginal decreases in the RE-group and the RVE-group displaying significant decreases in body-weight beyond bed-rest day-51 only. In light of events and experiences of the current study, recommendations on various aspects of bed-rest methodology are also discussed
Phase behavior and material properties of hollow nanoparticles
Effective pair potentials for hollow nanoparticles like the ones made from
carbon (fullerenes) or metal dichalcogenides (inorganic fullerenes) consist of
a hard core repulsion and a deep, but short-ranged, van der Waals attraction.
We investigate them for single- and multi-walled nanoparticles and show that in
both cases, in the limit of large radii the interaction range scales inversely
with the radius, , while the well depth scales linearly with . We predict
the values of the radius and the wall thickness at which the gas-liquid
coexistence disappears from the phase diagram. We also discuss unusual material
properties of the solid, which include a large heat of sublimation and a small

Differences in trauma history and psychopathology between PTSD patients with and without co-occurring dissociative disorders

European Journal of Psychotraumatology. 2013;2013(4): 21452.Background: The interplay between different types of potentially traumatizing events, posttraumatic symptoms, and the pathogenesis of PTSD or major dissociative disorders (DD) has been extensively studied during the last decade. However, the phenomenology and nosological classification of posttraumatic disorders is currently under debate. The current study was conducted to investigate differences between PTSD patients with and without co-occurring major DD with regard to general psychopathology, trauma history, and trauma-specific symptoms.
Methods: Twenty-four inpatients were administered the Clinician-Administered PTSD Scale for DSM-IV (CAPS) and the Mini-Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Dissociative Disorders (MINI-SKID-D) to assess DD and PTSD. Additionally, participants completed questionnaires to assess general psychopathology and health status.
Results: Symptom profiles and axis I comorbidity were similar in all patients. Traumatic experiences did not differ between the two groups, with both reporting high levels of childhood trauma. Only trauma-specific avoidance behavior and dissociative symptoms differed between groups.
Conclusion: Results support the view that PTSD and DD are affiliated disorders that could be classified within the same diagnostic category. Our results accord with a typological model of dissociation in which profound forms of dissociation are specific to DD and are accompanied with higher levels of trauma-specific avoidance in DD patients
Nonergodicity transitions in colloidal suspensions with attractive interactions
The colloidal gel and glass transitions are investigated using the idealized
mode coupling theory (MCT) for model systems characterized by short-range
attractive interactions. Results are presented for the adhesive hard sphere and
hard core attractive Yukawa systems. According to MCT, the former system shows
a critical glass transition concentration that increases significantly with
introduction of a weak attraction. For the latter attractive Yukawa system, MCT
predicts low temperature nonergodic states that extend to the critical and
subcritical region. Several features of the MCT nonergodicity transition in
this system agree qualitatively with experimental observations on the colloidal
gel transition, suggesting that the gel transition is caused by a low
temperature extension of the glass transition. The range of the attraction is
shown to govern the way the glass transition line traverses the phase diagram
relative to the critical point, analogous to findings for the fluid-solid

Phase equilibria and glass transition in colloidal systems with short-ranged attractive interactions. Application to protein crystallization
We have studied a model of a complex fluid consisting of particles
interacting through a hard core and a short range attractive potential of both
Yukawa and square-well form. Using a hybrid method, including a self-consistent
and quite accurate approximation for the liquid integral equation in the case
of the Yukawa fluid, perturbation theory to evaluate the crystal free energies,
and mode-coupling theory of the glass transition, we determine both the
equilibrium phase diagram of the system and the lines of equilibrium between
the supercooled fluid and the glass phases. For these potentials, we study the
phase diagrams for different values of the potential range, the ratio of the
range of the interaction to the diameter of the repulsive core being the main
control parameter. Our arguments are relevant to a variety of systems, from
dense colloidal systems with depletion forces, through particle gels,
nano-particle aggregation, and globular protein crystallization.Comment: 20 pages, 10 figure
Prealignment B(E2)-anomaly in 124Xe
Lifetimes of 17 levels of 124Xe were measured using the Recoil Distance Doppler Shift method. An anomalous E2-reduction was observed, starting at Iπ = 8+ and Iπ = 5+ in the groundstate and in the quasi-gamma band respectively. This anomaly is discussed in terms of the Interacting Boson Model
Diffusion and viscosity in a supercooled polydisperse system
We have carried out extensive molecular dynamics simulations of a supercooled
polydisperse Lennard-Jones liquid with large variations in temperature at a
fixed pressure. The particles in the system are considered to be polydisperse
both in size and mass. The temperature dependence of the dynamical properties
such as the viscosity () and the self-diffusion coefficients () of
different size particles is studied. Both viscosity and diffusion coefficients
show super-Arrhenius temperature dependence and fit well to the well-known
Vogel-Fulcher-Tammann (VFT) equation. Within the temperature range
investigated, the value of the Angell's fragility parameter (D )
classifies the present system into a strongly fragile liquid. The critical
temperature for diffusion () increases with the size of the
particles. The critical temperature for viscosity () is larger than
that for the diffusion and a sizeable deviations appear for the smaller size
particles implying a decoupling of translational diffusion from viscosity in
deeply supercooled liquid. Indeed, the diffusion shows markedly non-Stokesian
behavior at low temperatures where a highly nonlinear dependence on size is
observed. An inspection of the trajectories of the particles shows that at low
temperatures the motions of both the smallest and largest size particles are
discontinuous (jump-type). However, the crossover from continuous Brownian to
large length hopping motion takes place at shorter time scales for the smaller

The composition of the protosolar disk and the formation conditions for comets
Conditions in the protosolar nebula have left their mark in the composition
of cometary volatiles, thought to be some of the most pristine material in the
solar system. Cometary compositions represent the end point of processing that
began in the parent molecular cloud core and continued through the collapse of
that core to form the protosun and the solar nebula, and finally during the
evolution of the solar nebula itself as the cometary bodies were accreting.
Disentangling the effects of the various epochs on the final composition of a
comet is complicated. But comets are not the only source of information about
the solar nebula. Protostellar disks around young stars similar to the protosun
provide a way of investigating the evolution of disks similar to the solar
nebula while they are in the process of evolving to form their own solar
systems. In this way we can learn about the physical and chemical conditions
under which comets formed, and about the types of dynamical processing that
shaped the solar system we see today.
This paper summarizes some recent contributions to our understanding of both
cometary volatiles and the composition, structure and evolution of protostellar
