Woodworking facilities: Driving efficiency through Automation applied to major process steps

    Get PDF
The investment scenario applied to forestry development analyzes the fundamental changes in the production structure, among other things. These changes refer to the priority development of the pulp and paper industry through the chain of large-scale woodworking facilities, where pulp, paper and cardboard manufacturing plants are the key links. Such facilities include sawmilling facilities, wood-processing factories, and timber factories. Those provide a significant economic benefit, so improving them is one of the top priorities. Considering this priority is the purpose of this article. The goal was achieved using common and scientific research methods, including mathematical modeling. Theoretical research resulted in three sets of formulas adapted for evaluating the pulpwood barking from theoretical findings on image recognition. © 2018 Authors

Background. Approximately 50 % of children with cerebral palsy have vision problems, manifested in strabismus, impaired eye mobility, refractive errors, nystagmus development and partial atrophy of the optic nerve. The aim: to present a clinical case of combined correction of myopia and divergent strabismus in a patient with cerebral palsy (CP).Materials and methods. A clinical case of combined correction of myopia and divergent strabismus in a patient with cerebral palsy is presented. General anesthesia was used to perform a two-stage treatment under one anesthesia: the first stage – laser myopia correction by femtosecond extraction of the lenticule through a small access (SMILE) to both eyes, the second stage was the strabismus correction by performing tenoscleroplasty of the external rectus muscle and resection of the internal rectus muscle of both eyes. The sequence of stages is due to the relative traumatism of strabismus surgery, in some cases, accompanied by a reaction from the bulbar conjunctiva and the cornea in the form of edema, which, during subsequent femtosecond vision correction, can affect the refractive result and worsen visual acuity in the postoperative period.Results. The performed treatment let significantly increase uncorrected visual acuity, achieve a correct and stable eye position, which became the basis for changing the vision nature from monocular to binocular.Conclusion. Thus, modern laser and surgical technologies in combination with an adequate anesthesia allow rehabilitating patients as much as possible in a short time, even with severe forms of cerebral palsy, and significantly improving the quality of life

    Pion-nucleon scattering in a meson-exchange model

The pi-N interaction is studied within a meson-exchange model and in a coupled-channels approach which includes the channels pi-N, eta-N, as well as three effective pi-pi-N channels namely rho-N, pi-Delta, and sigma-N. Starting out from an earlier model of the Julich group systematic improvements in the dynamics and in some technical aspects are introduced. With the new model an excellent quantitative reproduction of the pi-N phase shifts and inelasticity parameters in the energy region up to 1.9 GeV and for total angular momenta J leq 3/2 is achieved. Simultaneously, good agreement with data for the total and differential pi-N -> eta-N transition cross sections is obtained. The connection of the pi_N dynamics in the S_{11} partial wave with the reaction pi-N -> eta-N is discussed.Comment: 32 pages, 9 figure

Time-Evolving SED of MKN421: A Multi-Band View and Polarimetric Signatures

The most detailed temporal studies of the emission from blazars are usually done by trying to obtain a dense, simultaneous coverage of the source over a large multi-wavelenght observational campaign. Although it is well know that correlations between multi-band emission present sizeable temporal lags in their correlated variability, such properties are usually neglected in the majority of observational studies, which model the evolution of source parameters over time by either building time-averaged SEDs (when data is scarce) or considering strictly simultaneous snapshots of the source along the spectrum. By making use of the resources and large database made available through the ASI Science Data Center (ASDC), we present a novel approach to the modelling of blazar emission whereby the multi-epoch SEDs for Mkn 421 are modelled considering the temporal lags between bands (both in short and long-timescales), as obtained by a detailed cross-correlation analysis, spanning data from radio to VHE gamma-rays from 2008 to 2014. In addition to that, long-term optical polarization data is used to aid and complement our physical interpretation of the state and evolution of the source

Dynamical coupled-channel approaches on a momentum lattice

Dynamical coupled-channel approaches are a widely used tool in hadronic physics that allow to analyze different reactions and partial waves in a consistent way. In such approaches the basic interactions are derived within an effective Lagrangian framework and the resulting pseudo-potentials are then unitarized in a coupled-channel scattering equation. We propose a scheme that allows for a solution of the arising integral equation in discretized momentum space for periodic as well as twisted boundary conditions. This permits to study finite size effects as they appear in lattice QCD simulations. The new formalism, at this stage with a restriction to S-waves, is applied to coupled-channel models for the sigma(600), f0(980), and a0(980) mesons, and also for the Lambda(1405) baryon. Lattice spectra are predicted.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure

Recovery of chloroplast genomes from medieval millet grains excavated from the Areni-1 cave in southern Armenia

Published online: 07 September 2022Panicum miliaceum L. was domesticated in northern China at least 7000 years ago and was subsequentially adopted in many areas throughout Eurasia. One such locale is Areni-1 an archaeological cave site in Southern Armenia, where vast quantities archaeobotanical material were well preserved via desiccation. The rich botanical material found at Areni-1 includes P. miliaceum grains that were identified morphologically and14C dated to the medieval period (873 ± 36 CE and 1118 ± 35 CE). To investigate the demographic and evolutionary history of the Areni-1 millet, we used ancient DNA extraction, hybridization capture enrichment, and high throughput sequencing to assemble three chloroplast genomes from the medieval grains and then compared these sequences to 50 modern P. miliaceum chloroplast genomes. Overall, the chloroplast genomes contained a low amount of diversity with domesticated accessions separated by a maximum of 5 SNPs and little inference on demography could be made. However, in phylogenies the chloroplast genomes separated into two clades, similar to what has been reported for nuclear DNA from P. miliaceum. The chloroplast genomes of two wild (undomesticated) accessions of P. miliaceum contained a relatively large number of variants, 11 SNPs, not found in the domesticated accessions. These results demonstrate that P. miliaceum grains from archaeological sites can preserve DNA for at least 1000 years and serve as a genetic resource to study the domestication of this cereal crop.Stephen M. The Quantum Theory of MIMO Markovian Feedback with Diffusive Measurements

Feedback control engineers have been interested in MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output) extensions of SISO (single-input single-output) results of various kinds due to its rich mathematical structure and practical applications. An outstanding problem in quantum feedback control is the extension of the SISO theory of Markovian feedback by Wiseman and Milburn [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 70}, 548 (1993)] to multiple inputs and multiple outputs. Here we generalize the SISO homodyne-mediated feedback theory to allow for multiple inputs, multiple outputs, and \emph{arbitrary} diffusive quantum measurements. We thus obtain a MIMO framework which resembles the SISO theory and whose additional mathematical structure is highlighted by the extensive use of vector-operator algebra.Comment: 17 pages, 2 figure

    DN interaction from meson exchange

    Get PDF
A model of the DN interaction is presented which is developed in close analogy to the meson-exchange KbarN potential of the Juelich group utilizing SU(4) symmetry constraints. The main ingredients of the interaction are provided by vector meson (rho, omega) exchange and higher-order box diagrams involving D*N, D\Delta, and D*\Delta intermediate states. The coupling of DN to the pi-Lambda_c and pi-Sigma_c channels is taken into account. The interaction model generates the Lambda_c(2595) resonance dynamically as a DN quasi-bound state. Results for DN total and differential cross sections are presented and compared with predictions of an interaction model that is based on the leading-order Weinberg-Tomozawa term. Some features of the Lambda_c(2595) resonance are discussed and the role of the near-by pi-Sigma_c threshold is emphasized. Selected predictions of the orginal KbarN model are reported too. Specifically, it is pointed out that the model generates two poles in the partial wave corresponding to the Lambda(1405) resonance.Comment: 14 pages, 8 figure
