Food service establishments that use onsite wastewater treatment systems are experiencing hydraulic and organic overloading of pretreatment systems and/or drain fields. Design guidelines for these systems are typically provided in State regulations and based on residential hydraulic applications. For the purposes of this research, hydraulic loading indicates the daily flow of water directed to the wastewater system. Organic loading refers to the composition of the wastewater as quantified by five-day biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5), total fats, oils and greases (FOG), and total suspended solids (TSS). The first part of this study included an analysis of the central tendencies of analytical data of four wastewater parameters from 28 restaurants representing a broad spectrum of restaurant types. Field sampling consisted of two sets of grab samples collected from each restaurant for six consecutive days at approximately the same time each day. These sets were collected approximately two weeks apart. The numerical data included BOD5, FOG, and TSS. The fourth parameter evaluated was daily flow. Data exploration and statistical analyses of the numerical data from the 28 restaurants was performed with the standard gamma probability distribution model in ExcelTM and used to determine inferences of the analytical data. The analysis shows higher hydraulic and organic values for restaurant wastewater than residential wastewater. The second part of the study included a statistical analysis of restaurant management practices and primary cuisine types and their influence on BOD5, FOG, TSS, and daily flow to determine if management practices and/or cuisine types may be influencing wastewater composition and flow. A self-reporting survey was utilized to collect management practice and cuisine type information. Survey response information and analytical data were entered into an ExcelTM spreadsheet and subsequently incorporated into SASTM statistical software for statistical analysis. Analysis indicated that the number of seats in a restaurant, use of self-serve salad bars, and primary cuisine types are statistically significant indicators of wastewater characteristics

Teaching Hispanic restaurant workers: Translanguaging as culturally sustaining pedagogy

In this article, we make a case for incorporating translanguaging pedagogy into the framework of Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy (CSP). Drawing on data from a one-year ethnographic study of an adult ESL program, we show how teachers believed in and attempted to create spaces for translanguaging and CSP, but in practice fell short. We conclude that translanguaging is most powerful when understood as a component of CSP but call for more research in this area.Accepted manuscrip

Identifying and Evaluating End-Users and Distribution Channels in the Baltic Countries and Poland

Gaining market share and increasing revenue stream are important aspects to every company. In order to reach these goals, sometimes companies have a need to explore foreign markets that can provide new business opportunities for their product solutions. However, there might be many barriers to achieving these goals, for example lack of access and information from the targeted end-users and differences in languages and culture too. The objective of this thesis is to develop a framework for identifying potential end-users and how to target them, that is, how to find suitable distribution channel partners that have access to the targeted market segments that can resell the products to them. To answer these research objectives, the theoretical framework proposes a model for identifying and segmenting the market and for evaluating and selecting an appropriate distribution channel partner. The main results of the research indicate that there is potential for both products studied. In the case of the Standard Price Pylon, it was observed that there are approximately 6.716 fuel stations in Poland and around 47 per cent of them are owned by independent gas station owners, who can be considered as potential end-users for this product solution. The potential distribution channel partners selected are two companies that are distributors of gas station equipment such as gas pumps, hoses and guns. They, too, can provide additional value added services such as the construction and restoration of fuel stations. These companies operate in Poland and they are PetroNova and Fortis. In the case of the LED-line, it was more challenging to identify potential end-users because this solution depends more on the value added perceived by its potential end-user which is relative to their own perception. However, there are several interesting potential distribution channels that operate in the Baltic countries and Poland. The company to be considered the best channel alternative is Onninen. /Kir1

Effect of travel motivation on tourist satisfaction through the dimensions of destination image: The case of leisure urban tourism in Monterrey, Mexico

    Get PDF
The subject of this research work is the effect of travel motivation on tourist satisfaction with the mediating variables being the two components of the destination’s perceived image in a context of leisure tourists to the city of Monterrey, Mexico. Through structural equation modeling by partial least squares (PLS) the identification of the main observable indicators of the travel motivation of tourists were identified and thus evidence of its determining role on tourist satisfaction was obtained. In this relationship, two main components of the image showed a mediator effect. The observable indicators of these components were also established as was their cause-effect relationship. Therefore, those aspects of motivation which are the most important for tourists and linked to tourist satisfaction were determined and those aspects (affective and cognitive) best valued in perceptions about the destination were also established. Finally, by way of conclusion, general recommendations for urban tourism product management are provided

Celecoxib accelerates functional recovery after sciatic nerve crush in the rat

The inflammatory response appears to be essential in the modulation of the degeneration and regeneration process after peripheral nerve injury. In injured nerves, cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) is strongly upregulated around the injury site, possibly playing a role in the regulation of the inflammatory response. In this study we investigated the effect of celecoxib, a COX-2 inhibitor, on functional recovery after sciatic nerve crush in rats. Unilateral sciatic nerve crush injury was performed on 10 male Wistar rats. Animals on the experimental group (n = 5) received celecoxib (10 mg/kg ip) immediately before the crush injury and daily for 7 days after the injury. Control group (n = 5) received normal saline at equal regimen. A sham group (n = 5), where sciatic nerve was exposed but not crushed, was also evaluated. Functional recovery was then assessed by calculating the sciatic functional index (SFI) on days 0,1,7,14 and 21 in all groups, and registering the day of motor and walking onset. In comparison with control group, celecoxib treatment (experimental group) had significant beneficial effects on SFI, with a significantly better score on day 7. Anti-inflammatory drug celecoxib should be considered in the treatment of peripheral nerve injuries, but further studies are needed to explain the mechanism of its neuroprotective effects

Today the retention millennial workers is a challenge for organizations. The purpose of this paper is to propose ideas to the decision makers, to lessen the high rate of personnel turnover in all kinds of industries in many countries. This research validates an instrument thatevaluates the employability factors of millennials in Mexico, according to their own expectations. We based our study on the previous literature about the millennial generation in many countries. To validate the questionnaire, a sampling of 781 workers from the states of Querétaro and Guanajuato in México was conducted. The method used to achieve the objective was through exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses. The confirmatory factor analysis was conducted using structural equation modeling, and tested two different methods: first order and second order models. With the three methods, exploratory, first order and second order factor analyses, similar results were obtained. In the analysis of the statistical techniques, two latent variables associated with the expectations of this generational group were generated. The factors found are “personal satisfaction with the organization” and “satisfaction with the organization’s social commitment.” These two factors are supported by the literature of other researchers. It is suggested that this questionnaire be validated in other countries but also in other regions of Mexico, using different productive sectors, thereby obtaining a broader perspective that will allow us to understand not only what millennials want from their work, but to what extent they want i

The purpose of this study is to analyze the role of trust in Mexican companies in relation to organizational factors, the leadership and career satisfaction of employees. To achieve this objective, a quantitative method of structural model equations was used. The sample consisted of 181 individuals working in service businesses, manufacturing and public service mainly. The study was done in the central part of Mexico. The study results show a positive correlation of trust of employees towards their managers related with benevolence and integrity. With regard to the relation with organizational factors, a strong relationship was found between trust and leadership but not with the policies related to management of employees. Finally, a weak relationship between leadership and career satisfaction of employees was confirmed. Through the model analyzed, it can be stated that the culture plays an important role for the development of trust in organizations. Also, recommendations for policy makers, such as ways of increasing feedback through employees, are presented
