    A community small-scale wind generation project in Peru

    Electrification systems based on renewable energy have proven to be suitable for providing decentralized electricity to isolated communities. Electricity generated through wind power is one of the technical options available, although infrequently used to date. This article aims to describe the main aspects of technical design, implementation and management of the first small-scale community wind generation project for rural electrification in Peru. This project took place in the community of El Alumbre, in the region of Cajamarca, which is a mountainous area characterized by low to medium wind speeds. This project, implemented by Soluciones Prácticas – Practical Action (Peru), brought electric power to the 33 households (a total of 150 inhabitants) as well as the school and health center of the community.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

    Household anaerobic digesters for biogas production in Latin America: a review

    This review aims to provide an overview of household biogas digester implementation in rural areas of Latin America. It considers the history of household digesters in Latin America, including technical, environmental, social and economic aspects. Several successful experiences have been promoted during the last decade, including the creation of the Network for Biodigesters in Latin America and the Caribbean (RedBioLAC) that provides a forum to coordinate implementation and research programmes throughout the continent. Although the potential of this technology is well demonstrated, some barriers are identified, such as the need for technical improvements, lack of social acceptance and high investment costs. Thus, further efforts should be undertaken to overcome these barriers and improve the technical performance, social acceptance, economic benefits and environmental impact in order to enhance its wide-spread dissemination in energy poor communities.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

    Sex education against the algorithm: the algorithmically enforced deplatforming of YouTube sex edutainment

    Deplatforming of sexual content has increased across social media, usually operationalized by commercially charged, and algorithmically enforced, platform policies. This paper extends work on the algorithmic deplatforming of sex through the case study of how sex education content, or ‘sex edutainment’ on YouTube, is impacted by the platform’s algorithmic structures. Enrolling actor-network theory, we demonstrate the delegation work YouTube enacts through algorithms by presenting empirical findings from a multi-method study examining the assemblage of YouTube, sex edutainment influencers, and young people. The findings highlight that despite YouTube’s curated platform imaginary as an amplifier of voices, algorithmic delegation of platform governance creates significant barriers for influencers creating sex edutainment on YouTube. Although not contravening YouTube’s policies, influencers regularly battle demonetization, age-restrictions and algorithmic bias. This undermines the benefits of sex edutainment by limiting access to content, creates precarious financial environments for influencers and risks erosion of audience trust. Meanwhile, algorithms designed to protect users enact this governance without adequately protecting influencers themselves, predominantly women and LGBTQ+ individuals, from harm. Despite YouTube’s veneer of democratization, the social discourses and protectionist narratives that have destabilized traditional sex education efforts permeate our digital environments and can be seen in the algorithmic enactment of YouTube’s policies

    Cohort Profile: The United Kingdom Research study into Ethnicity and COVID-19 outcomes in Healthcare workers (UK-REACH)

    The UK-REACH cohort was established to understand why ethnic minority healthcare workers (HCWs) are at risk of poorer outcomes from COVID-19 when compared with their White ethnic counterparts in the UK. Through study design, it contains a uniquely high percentage of participants from ethnic minority backgrounds about whom a wide range of qualitative and quantitative data have been collected. A total of 17 891 HCWs aged 16–89 years (mean age: 44) have been recruited from across the UK via all major healthcare regulators, individual National Health Service hospital trusts and UK HCW membership bodies who advertised the study to their registrants/staff to encourage participation in the study. Data available include linked healthcare records for 25 years from the date of consent and consent to obtain genomic sequencing data collected via saliva. Online questionnaires include information on demographics, COVID-19 exposures at work and home, redeployment in the workforce due to COVID-19, mental health measures, workforce attrition and opinions on COVID-19 vaccines, with baseline (n = 15 119), 6 (n = 5632) and 12-month follow-up (n = 6535) data captured.     Latent trajectories of adaptive behaviour in infants at high and low familial risk for autism spectrum disorder

    Background: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is characterized by persisting difficulties in everyday functioning. Adaptive behaviour is heterogeneous across individuals with ASD, and it is not clear to what extent early development of adaptive behaviour relates to ASD outcome in toddlerhood. This study aims to identify subgroups of infants based on early development of adaptive skills and investigate their association with later ASD outcome. Methods: Adaptive behaviour was assessed on infants at high (n=166) and low (n=74) familial risk for ASD between 8 and 36 months using the Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales (VABS-II). The four domains of VABS-II were modelled in parallel using growth mixture modelling to identify distinct classes of infants based on adaptive behaviour. Then, we associated class membership with clinical outcome and ASD symptoms at 36 months, and longitudinal measures of cognitive development. Results: We observed three classes characterised by: decreasing trajectories below age-appropriate norms (8.3%); stable trajectories around age-appropriate norms (73.8%); increasing trajectories reaching average scores by age 2 (17.9%). Infants with declining adaptive behaviour had a higher risk [odd ratio, OR=4.40 (confidence interval, CI: 1.90; 12.98)] for ASD and higher parent-reported symptoms in the social, communication and repetitive behaviour domains at 36 months. Furthermore, there was a discrepancy between adaptive and cognitive functioning as the class with improving adaptive skills showed stable cognitive development around average scores. Conclusions: Findings confirm the heterogeneity of trajectories of adaptive functioning in infancy, with a higher risk for ASD in toddlerhood linked to a plateau in the development of adaptive functioning after the first year of life

    This article assesses the normative resistance to Responsibility to Protect adopted by Brazil and Russia against the backdrop of their international identities and self-assigned roles in a changing global order.     Safety, immunogenicity, and efficacy of a COVID-19 vaccine (NVX-CoV2373) co-administered with seasonal influenza vaccines: an exploratory substudy of a randomised, observer-blinded, placebo-controlled, phase 3 trial

    Background: Safety and immunogenicity of COVID-19 vaccines when co-administered with influenza vaccines have not yet been reported. Methods: A sub-study on influenza vaccine co-administration was conducted as part of the phase 3 randomised trial of NVX-CoV2373’s safety and efficacy; ~400 participants meeting main study entry criteria, with no contraindications to influenza vaccination, were enroled. After randomisation to receive NVX-CoV2373 or placebo, sub-study participants received an open-label influenza vaccine at the same time as the first dose of NVX-CoV2373. Reactogenicity was evaluated for 7 days post-vaccination plus monitoring for unsolicited adverse events (AEs), medically-attended AEs (MAAEs), and serious AEs (SAEs). Vaccine efficacy against COVID-19 was assessed. Findings: Sub-study participants were younger (median age 39; 6.7 % ≥65 years), more racially diverse, and had fewer comorbid conditions than main study participants. Reactogenicity events more common in co-administration group included tenderness (70.1% vs 57.6%) or pain (39.7% vs 29.3%) at injection site, fatigue (27.7% vs 19.4%), and muscle pain (28.3% vs 21.4%). Rates of unsolicited AEs, MAAEs, and SAEs were low and balanced between the two groups. Co-administration resulted in no change to influenza vaccine immune response, while a reduction in antibody responses to the NVX-CoV2373 vaccine was noted. Vaccine efficacy against COVID-19 was 87.5% (95% CI: -0.2, 98.4) in those 18-<65 years in the sub-study while efficacy in the main study was 89.8% (95% CI: 79.7, 95.5).  Interpretation: This is the first study to demonstrate safety, immunogenicity, and efficacy of a COVID-19 vaccine when co-administered with influenza vaccines

The network has exemplified the productivity of having a forum of opportunities to tackle and share valuable innovations in materials, marketing, and approach to a project's management and finances. Currently, RedBioLAC is building momentum by beginning development of a web-based project information sharing and management platform. This document aims to provide a snapshot of the current reality and synthesize conclusions on the economic, institutional, cultural, and technical factors that need to be addressed. Finally, the emerging RedBioLAC is presented as a forum for exchanging experience and strengthening biodigester programs in Latin America
