    Get PDF

    Get PDF
The present study examines a sample of 220 pieces of news related to human evolution, written in Spanish and published over a period of two years, both in digital and print media. The aim of this study is to assess the rigor and coherence of the information in the news in our sample with scientific knowledge on the theory of evolution. To this end, errors and the incorrect use of concepts related to biological evolution are identified, classified according to criteria resulting from the review of previous studies, and finally, the frequency of errors identified in news published in print media is compared with that identified in digital media. The results presented allow us to highlight the significantly high frequency of errors in the news analyzed and the most frequent error categories. Results are discussed within the frame of the important role that scientific journalism plays in the processes of knowledge dissemination, in this case, related to human evolution. This research was funded by the University of the Basque Country through the project PES20/49

The probiotic effects of Bacillus spp. bacteria on the growth and survival rate of Litopenaeus vannamei in 30 and 40 g, salinities was investigated. We conducted the experiment in Bandargah Research Station, Bushehr province during 45 days. Four treatments with three replicates, and two controls were used and probiotic powder, dissolved in water along with the growth stage pellet was applied in 3O ppt and 4O ppt salinities. The control treatments were only fed by the growth stage pellet in 3O ppt and 4O ppt salinities. The results revealed that growth and survival rate of treatment groups in 3O ppt salinity exposed to the probiotic powder were higher than those of the controls without increasing probiotic powder (P0.05). Survival rate of the treatment groups in 4O ppt salinity was significantly higher than those of the control (P<0.05). Also, the results indicated that growth and survival factors of the treatment groups in 3O ppt salinity in comparison with those of the control in 4O ppt salinity were significantly higher. We conclude that addition of Bacillus spp. bacteria to 3O ppt salinity together with application of growth stage pellets to white shrimp, Litopenaeus vannaiiiei, could be very useful in comparison with 4O ppt salinity. The results of this study were obtained through ANOVA and LSD tests

Localizing Object-level Shape Variations with Text-to-Image Diffusion Models

Text-to-image models give rise to workflows which often begin with an exploration step, where users sift through a large collection of generated images. The global nature of the text-to-image generation process prevents users from narrowing their exploration to a particular object in the image. In this paper, we present a technique to generate a collection of images that depicts variations in the shape of a specific object, enabling an object-level shape exploration process. Creating plausible variations is challenging as it requires control over the shape of the generated object while respecting its semantics. A particular challenge when generating object variations is accurately localizing the manipulation applied over the object's shape. We introduce a prompt-mixing technique that switches between prompts along the denoising process to attain a variety of shape choices. To localize the image-space operation, we present two techniques that use the self-attention layers in conjunction with the cross-attention layers. Moreover, we show that these localization techniques are general and effective beyond the scope of generating object variations. Extensive results and comparisons demonstrate the effectiveness of our method in generating object variations, and the competence of our localization techniques.Comment: ICCV 2023. The development of shrimp aquaculture, in spite of its global necessity, is largely at stake as significant ecological and pathological problems are increasing in the vast majority of the shrimp producing countries. Shrimp immunology is a key element in establishing strategies for controlling diseases in shrimp aquaculture. The total haemocyte count (THC), differential haemocyte count (DHC), total plasma protein (TPP), Phagocytic activity (PA), bacterial clearance efficiency (BCE) and bactericidal activity (BE) were examined when the F. indicus shrimps (11.32±1.20 g) were immersed in seawater (39 ppt and 25 ± 1 ºC) containing hot-water extracts of brown alga Sargassum glaucescens at 100, 300 and 500 mg/l. These parameters increased significantly (p < 0.05) when the shrimp were immersed in seawater containing hot-water extracts at 100 mg/l after 3h and 300 and 500 mg/l after 2 h. F. indicus shrimps that were immersed in hot-water extracts at 300 and 500 mg/l had increased phagocytic activity and clearance efficiency to Vibrio spp. after 2 hours. But bactericidal activity increased significantly after 1 hour in the same concentrations

    Get PDF
BACKGROUND: Asthma is the most common chronic disease of childhood that causes disturbance in the physical, emotional, mental health, and different information has been mentioned on its risk factors, including factors associated with birth. Therefore, in this study, the relationship between children asthma and factors associated with birth was studied. METHODS: This case-control study was performed on 50 children with asthma as the case group and 150 children hospitalized without asthma as the control group (after matched for age and sex) in an age range of 4-14 years old. Information required on factors affecting asthma was recorded for both groups. Data analysis was performed using SPSS for Windows software. RESULTS: The results of this study showed that the majority of children in the case group were males born through cesarean operation (C-section). A significant difference was seen between two groups in terms of factors such as preterm [odds ratio (OR) = 3.27, confidence interval (CI) 95% = 1.57-6.81] and family history of asthma (OR = 8.50, CI 95% = 4.10-17.60). Regression model of relational variables with asthma show that the family history of asthma was most effective determinant on birth-related factors of asthma. CONCLUSION: The findings of this study showed that positive family history of the disease and premature-birth in infant correlates significantly and directly with asthma occurrence in children. Thus, it is recommended to make further follow-ups in providing prenatal care and early diagnosis of the disease

AIMS: The aim of this study was to observe the percentage of thromboembolic and haemorrhagic events over a 2-year follow-up in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF) undergoing closure of the left atrial appendage (LAA) with an occlusion device. Observed events and CHADS2 (congestive heart failure, hypertension, age, diabetes, stroke history), CHA2DS2-VASc (also adding: vascular disease and sex) and HAS-BLED (hypertension, abnormal liver/renal function, stroke history, bleeding predisposition, labile international normalised ratios, elderly, drugs/alcohol use)-predicted events were compared. METHODS: LAA closure with an occlusion device was performed in 167 NVAF patients contraindicated for oral anticoagulants and recruited from 12 hospitals between 2009 and 2013. At least two transoesophageal echocardiograms were performed in the first 6 months postimplantation. Antithrombotics included clopidogrel and aspirin. Patients were monitored for death, stroke, major and relevant bleeding and hospitalisation for concomitant conditions. Mean age was 74.68±8.58, median follow-up was 24 months, 5.38% had intraoperative complications and implantation was successful in 94.6% of subjects. Mortality during follow-up was 10.8%, mostly (9.5%) non-cardiac related. Bleeding occurred in 10.1% of subjects, 5.7% major and 4.4% minor though relevant, and 4.4% suffered stroke. Major bleeding and stroke/transient ischaemic attack events within 2 years (annual event rates, 290 patients/year) were less frequent than expected from CHADS2 (2.4% vs 9.6%), CHA2DS2-VASc (2.4% vs 8.3%) and HAS-BLED (3.1% vs 6.6%) risk scores (p<0.001, p=0.003, p=0.047, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: LAA closure with an occlusion device in patients contraindicated for oral anticoagulants is a therapeutic option associated with fewer thromboembolic and haemorrhagic events than expected from risk scores, particularly in the second year postimplantation
