    Effects of Communication Media Choice on the Quality and Efficacy of Emergency Calls Assisted by a Mobile Nursing Protocol Tool:

    The transition from paper to electronic-based records in the healthcare industry has posed several challenges to conventional medical practices. The introduction of technology in day-to-day medical and nursing practices deserves careful consideration. In this work, we report the results of a controlled experiment to compare nurses' consultation in emergency calls in six different conditions. We studied the effect that the type of communication media (face-to-face, telephone, videoconference) and type of nursing protocol media (paper-based, electronic-based) can have upon consultation time, mistakes made, pauses during consultation, eye contact, and efficacy of the consultation. We found that the type of communication media has an effect on consultation time; on average, fewer mistakes were made during telephone-based consultations; for eye contact, there were significantly fewer eye contacts during face-to-face than during videoconference consultations; finally, the type of communication media or protocol media did not have any effect in the efficacy of the consultation

    Group psychological abuse: Taxonomy and severity of its components

    The purpose of this study was to delimit group psychological abuse through a psychosocial approach. An operational definition of the phenomenon and a taxonomy of group psychological abuse strategies were proposed based on a review of the scientific literature. A panel of 31 experts in the area evaluated the content of the taxonomy and judged the severity of the strategies through a Delphi study. Group psychological abuse was defined by the application of abusive strategies, their continued duration, and their ultimate aim, i.e., subjugation of the individual. The taxonomy showed adequate content validity. Expert's judgments allowed for hierarchically organizing the strategies based on their severity, being the most severe those directed to emotional area. Operationalizing, classifying and organizing the strategies hierarchically contributes to a better delimitation of the phenomenon, which is useful for both the academic and applied field

    Development and validation of the scale of psychological abuse in intimate partner violence (EAPA-P).

    Background: In the context of intimate partner violence, psychological abuse (PA) has progressively gained scientific relevance. Even so, a greater effort is needed to define and evaluate psychological intimate partner abuse. A new exhaustive and operative taxonomy of PA strategies leads to the contribution of a new evaluation instrument. Method: Participants were 101 women between 24 and 82 years old, who were abused by their partners and attended to in different municipal Catalan services, specialized in the topic. Results: The analyses have shown the suitability of a 19-item instrument divided into two factors: (1) direct PA strategies and (2) indirect PA strategies. The former includes strategies that affect the emotional, cognitive and behavioral dimension of the victim. The latter includes items that measure the amount of control and domination over the victim's context. This scale has adequate psychometric properties in terms of score reliability and the validity of the relationship with other women's health variables.     Molecular Diagnosis of Leishmaniasis in Spain: Development and Validation of Ready-To-Use Gel-Form Nested and Real-Time PCRs To Detect Leishmania spp

    Leishmaniasis is an endemic parasitic disease in at least 98 countries. In Spain, it is considered a zoonosis caused by Leishmania infantum, with an annual incidence of 0.62 cases/100,000 inhabitants. The predominant clinical manifestations are the cutaneous (CL) and visceral forms (VL), and the diagnosis is performed by parasitological, serological, and molecular tests. At the WHO Collaborating Center for Leishmaniasis (WHOCCLeish), routine diagnostic tests are based on a nested PCR (Ln-PCR), culture, and serological tests. To simplify our PCR protocol, we aimed to develop and validate a ready-to-use nested gel-form PCR (LeishGelPCR) and a duplex real-time PCR (qPCR) that allowed simultaneous detection of Leishmania and mammalian DNA as an internal control (Leish-qPCR). Clinical validation was performed in 200 samples from the WHOCCLeish collection; 92 and 85 out of 94 and 87 samples were positive by LeishGelPCR and Leish-qPCR, respectively, showing a sensitivity of 98% in both approaches. The specificity was 100% for LeishGelPCR and 98% for Leish-qPCR. The limits of detection of both protocols were similar (0.5 and 0.2 parasites/reaction). Parasite loads in VL and CL forms were similar, although high loads were observed when invasive samples were tested. In conclusion, LeishGelPCR and Leish-qPCR showed excellent performance in the diagnosis of leishmaniasis. These new forms of 18S rRNA gene PCR are equivalent to Ln-PCR and can be introduced in the algorithm for CL and VL diagnosis. IMPORTANCE Although the gold standard for diagnosis of leishmaniasis is the microscopic observation of amastigotes, molecular techniques are becoming a cost-efficient alternative. Currently, PCR is a routine resource that is used in many reference microbiology laboratories. In this article, we have described two ways to improve the reproducibility and usability of the molecular detection of Leishmania spp. These new approaches could be introduced even in middle- and low-resource laboratories; one is a ready-to-use gel-form system of a nested PCR and the other is a real-time PCR.     Impact of Liver Inflammation on Bile Acid Side Chain Shortening and Amidation

Whether liver inflammation also affects BA side chain shortening and conjugation was investigated. In human liver cell lines (IHH, HepG2, and HepaRG), agonists of nuclear receptors including the farnesoid X receptor (FXR), liver X receptor (LXR), and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs) did not affect the expression of BA-related peroxisomal enzymes. In contrast, hepatocyte nuclear factor 4α (HNF4α) inhibition down-regulated acyl-CoA oxidase 2 (ACOX2). ACOX2 was repressed by fibroblast growth factor 19 (FGF19), which was prevented by extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) pathway inhibition. These changes were paralleled by altered BA synthesis (HPLC-MS/MS). Cytokines able to down-regulate cholesterol-7α-hydroxylase (CYP7A1) had little effect on peroxisomal enzymes involved in BA synthesis except for ACOX2 and bile acid-CoA:amino acid N-acyltransferase (BAAT), which were down-regulated, mainly by oncostatin M (OSM). This effect was prevented by Janus kinase (JAK) inhibition, which restored BA side chain shortening and conjugation. The binding of OSM to the extracellular matrix accounted for a persistent effect after culture medium replacement. In silico analysis of four databases (n = 201) and a validation cohort (n = 90) revealed an inverse relationship between liver inflammation and ACOX2/BAAT expression which was associated with changes in HNF4α levels. In conclusion, BA side chain shortening and conjugation are inhibited by inflammatory effectors.     Spin diffusion versus proximity effect at ferromagnet/superconductor La_(0.7)Ca_(0.3)MnO_(3)/YBa_(2)Cu_(3)O_(7-δ) interfaces

    We report on the interplay between magnetism and superconductivity in La_(0.7)Ca_(0.3)MnO_(3)/YBa_(2)Cu_(3)O_(7) structures. We have grown heterostructures (bilayers and trilayers) with a constant thickness of the ferromagnetic layer of 40 unit cells (15 nm) and changing the thickness of the superconductor between 1 (1.2 nm) and 40 unit cells (48 nm). The critical temperature of the bilayers decreases when the thickness of the superconductor is reduced below 10 unit cells, thus providing an estimate of the length scale of superconductivity suppression by spin-polarized quasiparticles in YBa_(2)Cu_(3)O_(7-δ) (YBCO) of 10 nm, much larger than the coherence length. For thickness of the YBCO layer smaller than 4 unit cells; a second mechanism of superconductivity depression comes into play, probably related to the ferromagnetic/superconducting proximity effect. The relative importance in depressing the critical temperature of intrinsic mechanisms (quasiparticle diffusion and proximity effect) and extrinsic ones (intralayer disorder, interface roughness, or reduced dimensionality of ultrathin layers) is discussed

    Correcting flaws in the assignment of nitrogen chemical environments in N-doped graphene

    X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) applied to N-doped graphene leads to a rather broad N(1s) core level signal that, based on different sources available in the literature, is most often interpreted by fitting the experimental spectra to three peaks. The resulting N(1s) features are assigned to graphitic, pyrrolic, and pyridinic nitrogen, even if these are far from being uniquely defined in the literature. This broadly accepted interpretation has been questioned by recent accurate Hartree-Fock calculations concluding that graphitic and pyrrolic N(1s) core level binding energies are too close to be distinguished. Consideration of models with N in other so far unexplored environments such as N dimers or N at defects show some variations in the calculated core level binding energies. However, these are not large enough to justify a third peak and suggest that the usual three peaks interpretation of the N(1s) XPS in N-doped graphene may be an artefact caused by the fitting procedure. New measurements have been carried out for samples of N-doped graphene and the obtained N(1s) spectra fitted to two or three peaks. It turns out that the spectra can be equally fitted using two or three peaks but only the former is consistent with the results of the unbiased ab initio calculations which calls for a revision of the usual assignment

    Taxonomy and hierarchy of psychological abuse strategies in intimate partner relationships

    Taking a psychosocial perspective this study analyses the com-ponents of psychological abuse in intimate adult partner violence against women. Following a review of studies on the subject the main objective that emerged was the need for a new taxonomy of psychological abuse strategies, one which should include their corresponding operational defini-tions. The proposed new classification was then evaluated by means of a Delphi study involving 32 experts from the academic and professional worlds. These experts were asked to assess the suitability of the system cat-egories and to rate the severity of the impact made by each of the strategies on the global phenomenon of psychological abuse in couples. The results show that the experts ratified the new classification of strategies and the corresponding operational definitions, thereby endorsing their content and construct validity. When rating the strategies according to the severity of their impact, those of an emotional nature were considered the most se-vere, followed by those related to the immediate context, those of a cogni-tive nature and, finally, behavioural strategies.
