    Spectro-astrometry of V1515 Cyg

    FU Orionis objects are a class of young stars with important bursts in luminosity and which show evidence of accretion and ejection activity. It is generally accepted that they are surrounded by a Keplerian circumstellar disk and an infalling envelope. The outburst would occurs because of a sudden increase in the accretion rate. We aim at studying the regions closer to the central star in order to observe the signs of the accretion/ejection activity. We present optical observations of the Halpha line using the Integral Field Spectrograph OASIS, at the William Herschel Telescope, combined with Adaptive Optics. Since this technique gives the spectral information for both spatial directions, we carried out a two-dimensional spectro-astrometric study of the signal. We measured a clear spectro-astrometric signal in the North-South direction. The cross-correlation between the spectra showed a spatial distribution in velocity suggestive of scattering by a disk surrounding the star. This would be one of the few spatial inferences of a disk observed in a FU Orionis object. However, in order to fully understand the observed structure, higher angular and spectral resolution observations are required. V1515 Cyg appears now as an important object to be observed with a new generation of instruments to increase our knowledge about the disk and outflows structure in FU Orionis objects

    Magnetic behavior of lamellar mnps3 and cdps3 composites with a paramagnetic manganese(iii) macrocyclic guest

    Indexación: ScieloSix new composites derived from the intercalation of the MPS3 phases (M = MnII, CdIII) with the macrocyclic manganese(III) complex [MnL(H2O)2].NO3(H2O) (LH2 = Schiff base macrocyclic ligand derived from the condensation of 2-hydroxy-5-methy1-1,3-benzene-dicarbaldehyde and 1,2-diamine-benzene) were obtained by two different synthetic procedures: a conventional and a microwave assisted method. The composites [MnL]0.25K0.15Mn0.80 PS3(H2O)~1.0 (1), and [MnL]0.25K0.15Cd 0. 80PS3(H2O)~0.5 (2) were obtained by the conventional method, after stirring a suspension of the corresponding potassium precursor and the macrocyclic complex for two weeks, while [MnL]0.35K0.15Mn0.80 PS3(H2O)~1.0 (3) and [MnL]0.25K0.15Cd 0. 80PS3(H2O)~0.5 (4) after stirring for four weeks at room temperature. Using a microwave assisted reaction permitted to obtain in a shorter period of time as compared with the conventional method, composites [MnL]0.20K0.15Mn0.80 PS3(H2O)~1.0 (5) and [MnL]0.15K0.15Cd 0. 80PS3(H2O)~0.5 (6). All the M = MnII, MnIII composites show a bulk antiferromagnetic behavior. However, the spontaneous magnetization present at low temperature in the potassium precursor K0.40Mn0.80 PS3(H2O)~1.0 is observable in composite [MnL]0.20K0.15Mn0.80 PS3(H2O)~1.0 (5), while it is completely absent in composites [MnL]0.25K0.15Mn0.80 PS3(H2O)~1.0 (1) and [MnL]0.35K0.15Mn0.80 PS3(H2O)~1.0 (3).     On the geometry of moduli spaces of coherent systems on algebraic curves

    Let CC be an algebraic curve of genus gg. A coherent system on CC consists of a pair (E,V)(E,V), where EE is an algebraic vector bundle over CC of rank nn and degree dd and VV is a subspace of dimension kk of the space of sections of EE. The stability of the coherent system depends on a parameter α\alpha. We study the geometry of the moduli space of coherent systems for different values of α\alpha when k≤nk\leq n and the variation of the moduli spaces when we vary α\alpha. As a consequence, for sufficiently large α\alpha, we compute the Picard groups and the first and second homotopy groups of the moduli spaces of coherent systems in almost all cases, describe the moduli space for the case k=n−1k=n-1 explicitly, and give the Poincar\'e polynomials for the case k=n−2k=n-2.Comment: 38 pages; v3.     Competition between noise and coupling in the induction of synchronisation.

    We apply a Fokker-Planck analysis to investigate the relative influences of coupling strength and noise on the synchronisation of two phase oscillators. We go beyond earlier studies of noise-induced synchronisation (without couplings) and coupling-induced synchronisation (without common noise) to consider both effects together, and we obtain a result that is very different from a straightforward superposition of the effects of each agent acting alone: two regimes are possible depending on which agent is inducing the synchronisation. In each regime, one agent induces and the other hinders the synchronisation. In particular we show that, counterintuitively, coupling can sometimes inhibit synchronisation

    Ventilatory function in young adults and dietary antioxidant intake

We assessed the relation between ventilatory function and antioxidant components of diet in young Chileans. Forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1), forced vital capacity (FVC), and the ratio FEV1/FVC were measured in 1232 adults aged 22-28 years, using a Vitalograph device. Dietary intake was ascertained with a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) designed for this study, from which nutrient and flavonoid intakes were estimated. Dietary patterns were derived with Principal Component Analysis (PCA). After controlling for potential confounders, dietary intake of total catechins was positively associated with FVC (Regression coefficient (RC) of highest vs. lowest quintile of intake 0.07; 95% CI 0.01 to 0.15; p per trend 0.006). Total fruit intake was related to FVC (RC of highest vs. lowest quintile 0.08; 95% CI 0.003 to 0.15; p per trend 0.02). Intake of omega 3 fatty acids was associated with a higher FEV1 (RC for highest vs. lowest quintile 0.08; 95% CI 0.01 to 0.15 L; p per trend 0.02) and with FVC 0.08 (RC in highest vs. lowest quintile of intake 0.08, 95% CI 0.001 to 0.16; p per trend 0.04). Our results show that fresh fruits, flavonoids, and omega 3 fatty acids may contribute to maintain ventilatory function.Wellcome Trust 059448Z

    Modeling and Optimization of Lactic Acid Synthesis by the Alkaline Degradation of Fructose in a Batch Reactor

    The present work deals with the determination of the optimal operating conditions of lactic acid synthesis by the alkaline degradation of fructose. It is a complex transformation for which detailed knowledge is not available. It is carried out in a batch or semi-batch reactor. The ‘‘Tendency Modeling’’ approach, which consists of the development of an approximate stoichiometric and kinetic model, has been used. An experimental planning method has been utilized as the database for model development. The application of the experimental planning methodology allows comparison between the experimental and model response. The model is then used in an optimization procedure to compute the optimal process. The optimal control problem is converted into a nonlinear programming problem solved using the sequencial quadratic programming procedure coupled with the golden search method. The strategy developed allows simultaneously optimizing the different variables, which may be constrained. The validity of the methodology is illustrated by the determination of the optimal operating conditions of lactic acid production
