Chapter Valorization of Microalgae and Energy Resources

    Get PDF
Microalgae biotechnology has grown very rapidly in the last few decades due to the multiple applications that these microorganisms have from pharmaceuticals and cosmetics to foods/feeds and biofuels. One of the main challenges in expanding this industry is to enlarge the single use of the biomass produced in addition to reducing the high biomass production cost of the current technologies. To overcome this bottleneck, the development of microalgae-based biorefineries has been proposed. The issue is to obtain as many bioproducts as possible from the cultivated biomass, including biofuels. Consequently, biodiesel production (from the lipid fraction), bioethanol (from carbohydrate fraction), and biogas or bio-oil (from the whole biomass) have been posited. In this book chapter, we review the current state of the art in the production of sustainable biofuels from microalgae and analyze the potential of microalgae to contribute to the biofuel sector

Semantic Similarity Measures Applied to an Ontology for Human-Like Interaction

The focus of this paper is the calculation of similarity between two concepts from an ontology for a Human-Like Interaction system. In order to facilitate this calculation, a similarity function is proposed based on five dimensions (sort, compositional, essential, restrictive and descriptive) constituting the structure of ontological knowledge. The paper includes a proposal for computing a similarity function for each dimension of knowledge. Later on, the similarity values obtained are weighted and aggregated to obtain a global similarity measure. In order to calculate those weights associated to each dimension, four training methods have been proposed. The training methods differ in the element to fit: the user, concepts or pairs of concepts, and a hybrid approach. For evaluating the proposal, the knowledge base was fed from WordNet and extended by using a knowledge editing toolkit (Cognos). The evaluation of the proposal is carried out through the comparison of system responses with those given by human test subjects, both providing a measure of the soundness of the procedure and revealing ways in which the proposal may be improved. The development of this approach and its construction as part of the LaBDA-Interactor Human-Like Interaction System, part of the research projects SemAnts (TSI-020110-2009-419) and THUBAN (TIN2008-02711) and CADOOH (TSI-020302-2011-21), is supported by the Spanish Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Commerce and the Spanish Ministry of Education, respectively. Besides, the knowledge bases were populated using the COGNOS toolkit developed through the research project MA2VICMR (S2009/TIC-1542) supported by the Regional Government of Madrid.Publicad

The rise of the use of technology in mathematics education, especially in the dynamic approach to geometry, requires well-founded empirical studies that inform its effective use in the classroom. This article responds to the demand for interventions that address the affective and cognitive dimensions, as well as the study of the relationship between them. Through a teaching experiment in two secondary school classes, the influence of GeoGebra in the development of students' attitudes related to mathematics and mathematical competence is analysed. The quantitative analysis of the data shows a positive evolution in the studied variables, while the qualitative analysis reports on how this evolution took place, on the properties of the software that supported it and on the relationship between affective and cognitive constructs

This article belongs to the Special Issue Intelligent Control of Mobile Robotics. The expansion of electric vehicles in urban areas has paved the way toward the era of autonomous vehicles, improving the performance in smart cities and upgrading related driving problems. This field of research opens immediate applications in the tourism areas, airports or business centres by greatly improving transport efficiency and reducing repetitive human tasks. This project shows the problems derived from autonomous driving such as vehicle localization, low coverage of 4G/5G and GPS, detection of the road and navigable zones including intersections, detection of static and dynamic obstacles, longitudinal and lateral control and cybersecurity aspects. The approaches proposed in this article are sufficient to solve the operational design of the problems related to autonomous vehicle application in the special locations such as rough environment, high slopes and unstructured terrain without traffic rules.Research is supported by the Spanish Government through the CICYT projects (PID2019-104793RB-C31 and RTI2018-096036-B-C21), the Comunidad de Madrid through SEGVAUTO-4.0-CM (P2018/EMT-4362) and through EAI of the Ministry of Science and Innovation of the Government of Spain project RTI2018-095143-B-C2

El Perfil sísmico ALCUDIA: una imagen de la Zona Centroibérica (Varisco Ibérico meridional, España)

The 250 km long, vertical incidence seismic reflection profile ALCUDIA was acquired in spring 2007. It samples the Variscan Central Iberian Zone from Toledo to Fuenteovejuna. Its main goal was to continue the structure obtained for the crust and mantle from the IBERSEIS transect towards the N and NE. The acquisition parameters, similar to those used in the IBERSEIS profile have proven to be adequate to show a detailed image of the whole crust and upper mantle. After preliminary processing, the upper crust shows a moderate reflectivity that can be easily correlated with identifiable surface geologic features. The middle and lower part of the crust seems to be very reflective, laminated and afected by deformation, although to a different extent. The Moho is placed at approximately 10 s TWT and appears to be flat in the time section. The section can be divided into four domains of reflectivity that can be key to stablish different domains of crustal evolution. This new transect, together with the previous IBERSEIS profile, complete an almost 600 km long lithospheric section that crosses the southern half of the Iberian Variscides.
