    Wetland restoration and nitrate reduction: the example of the periurban wetland of Vitoria-Gasteiz (Basque Country, North Spain)

    Changes in land use and agricultural intensification caused wetlands on the quaternary aquifer of Vitoria-Gasteiz (Basque Country) to disappear some years ago and nitrate concentration in groundwaters increased very quickly. The Basque Government recently declared the East Sector of this aquifer a Vulnerable Zone according to the 91/676/CEE European Directive. Recently, the wetlands have been restored through the closure of the main drainage ditches, the consequent elevation of the water table and the abondonment of agricultural practices near the wetlands. This is the case of the Zurbano wetland. Restoration has allowed the recovery of its biogeochemical function, which has reduced nitrate concentrations in waters. Nitrate concentrations which exceed 50 mg l–1 in groundwaters entering into the wetland are less than 10 mg l–1 at the outlet. Conditions in the wetland are conducive to the loss of nitrates: organic matter rich wetted soils, clay presence allowing a local semiconfined flow and very low hydraulic gradient. Water quality monitoring at several points around the wetland showed the processes involved in nitrate loss, although some aspects still remain unresolved. However, during storm events, the wetland effectively reduces the nitrate concentration entering the Alegria River, the most important river on the quaternary aquifer

    In this manuscript we show that the second Feng-Rao number of any telescopic numerical semigroup agrees with the multiplicity of the semigroup. To achieve this result we first study the behavior of Ap\'ery sets under gluings of numerical semigroups. These results provide a bound for the second Hamming weight of one-point Algebraic Geometry codes, which improves upon other estimates such as the Griesmer Order Bound

    Analysis of wind data in the low atmosphere from a RASS sodar

    This paper focuses on the ability of a sodar to describe some characteristics of the atmospheric vertical structure and presents some techniques for meteorological data evaluation. The measuring campaign took place in April 2001 and consisted of 10-min averages covering the lower atmosphere from 40 to 500 m at 20-m levels. Three methods were considered, the first of which was a scalar analysis performed using a combination of wind and temperature median profiles. A noticeable contrast between day and night was obtained. Flat wind profiles during the day were a consequence of prevailing convective conditions that determined thermal turbulence. A stable layer above 260 m capped the unstable layer situated below and guaranteed the stability of the boundary layer. During the night, the presence of a low level jet was the most significant feature. The height of the core was 340 m and the higher vertical winds defined it clearly. The second method focused on the wind vector. In this analysis, the anti-cyclonic rotation of hourly averages was considered in the lower levels where it was observed. After a translation of the origin, an empirical, robust model with two parts was then proposed for the resulting vector. The angle was described linearly and the module by a second order model for cylindrical data. Finally, as a third method, three regression analyses were investigated: vectorial, taking every wind component separately and scalar. The two first seemed to be more complete due to their description of anti-cyclonic wind rotation when height increased. Correlation coefficients also proved to be more satisfactory. As a consequence, these techniques, although less frequently used, are more suitable to study wind in the low atmosphere

    Cambios ontogenéticos e intraespecíficos observados en la rádula de Polycera aurantiomarginata García and Bobo, 1984 (Gastropoda Opisthobranchia)

    Polycera aurantiomarginata García and Bobo 1984 has a stable population in the intertidal area of El Portil beach (Huelva, SW Spain). This fact allowed specimens of different sizes to be collected from March 2001 to December 2003. In this paper, the ontogenetic variations of the radula of P. aurantiomarginata are studied. The radulae of 141 specimens were examined, 138 from El Portil and 3 from La Herradura (Granada, SE Spain). Specimens of 1.5-2 mm in length lack the typical radula described for P. aurantiomarginata. They have the so called pre-radula whose teeth are different in size and shape from the typical radula of the adults. In the specimens of 3 and 4 mm the pre-radula coexists with the characteristic radula, which is the single structure present in the specimens larger than 4 mm. The following features of the radula are included in this study: radular length, number of teeth rows and length of the outer lateral teeth. According to the three measured variables, the affinities among specimens without a pre-radula were established through cluster analysis, which defined three different groups (4-10 mm, 11-22 mm and 23-48 mm). Correlations between specimen length and radula length, number of rows and mean length of outer lateral teeth were significant. Feeding strategies could be related to the different morphology of the radula established by the Cluster analysis.Polycera aurantiomarginata García y Bobo, 1984 muestra una población estable y en la localidad de El Portil (Huelva, SW de España), lo que ha permitido la recolección, desde marzo de 2001 hasta diciembre de 2003, de un alto número de ejemplares de todos los tamaños. En el presente estudio se ha extraído la rádula de 141 animales, 138 recogidos en la zona intermareal de El Portil y 3 en La Herradura (Granada). Los tamaños de los animales han oscilado entre 1.5 mm y 48 mm. Se ha podido observar en los individuos de entre 1.5 y 2 mm la existencia de una pre-rádula cuyos dientes son morfológicamente diferentes a los de la rádula de los individuos mayores; sin embargo, en los ejemplares de 3 y 4 mm esta pre-rádula coexiste con la rádula típica, siendo esta estructura la única presente en individuos de longitud igual o mayor a 4 mm. A cada una de las rádulas extraídas, tanto con pre-rádula o sin ella, se le ha medido la longitud total de la cinta, la longitud del diente lateral externo y el número de filas de dientes. Considerando los tres parámetros medidos, las afinidades entre los ejemplares sin pre-rádula se establecieron a partir de análisis de Cluster, que definieron tres grupos distintos (4-10 mm, 11-22 mm y 23-48 mm). Las correlaciones existentes entre la longitud de los individuos y la longitud de la rádula, el número de filas y la longitud media de los dientes fueron significativas. Las diferencias morfológicas reconocidas en los grupos considerados podrían estar relacionadas con distintas estrategias alimentarias.

    Anderson localization in a periodic photonic lattice with a disordered boundary

    We investigate experimentally the light evolution inside a two-dimensional finite periodic array of weakly- coupled optical waveguides with a disordered boundary. For a completely localized initial condition away from the surface, we find that the disordered boundary induces an asymptotic localization in the bulk, centered around the initial position of the input beam.Comment: 3 pages, 4 figure

    Herschel Far-IR counterparts of SDSS galaxies: Analysis of commonly used Star Formation Rate estimates

    We study a hundred of galaxies from the spectroscopic Sloan Digital Sky Survey with individual detections in the Far-Infrared Herschel PACS bands (100 or 160 μ\mum) and in the GALEX Far-UltraViolet band up to z∼\sim0.4 in the COSMOS and Lockman Hole fields. The galaxies are divided into 4 spectral and 4 morphological types. For the star forming and unclassifiable galaxies we calculate dust extinctions from the UV slope, the Hα\alpha/Hβ\beta ratio and the LIR/LUVL_{\rm IR}/L_{\rm UV} ratio. There is a tight correlation between the dust extinction and both LIRL_{\rm IR} and metallicity. We calculate SFRtotal_{total} and compare it with other SFR estimates (Hα\alpha, UV, SDSS) finding a very good agreement between them with smaller dispersions than typical SFR uncertainties. We study the effect of mass and metallicity, finding that it is only significant at high masses for SFRHα_{H\alpha}. For the AGN and composite galaxies we find a tight correlation between SFR and LIR_{IR} (σ∼\sigma\sim0.29), while the dispersion in the SFR - LUV_{UV} relation is larger (σ∼\sigma\sim0.57). The galaxies follow the prescriptions of the Fundamental Plane in the M-Z-SFR space.Comment: 24 pages, 23 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA
