Sex differences in ochratoxin a toxicity in F344 rats after 7 and 21 days of daily oral administration

Ochratoxin A (OTA) is a potent renal carcinogen in male rats but not in females. The mechanisms underlying these differences are unknown. The sex-dependent response of F344 rats after a repeated OTA oral administration for 7 (0.50 mg/kg bw) or 21 days (0.21 and 0.50 mg/kg bw) was evaluated. General toxicity, sex and thyroid hormones and histopathology were studied. OTA was quantified (HPLC-FLD) in plasma, kidney and liver and the expression of kidney transporters (RT-qPCR) was studied. After 7 days, kidney histopathology showed more pronounced signs of toxicity in males than in females. After 21 days, a higher toxicity was observed but sex differences disappeared. OTA concentration in plasma and tissues was similar in both sexes. Downregulation was the general OTA-induced effect. Oats' downregulation was slow in males and Oat3 did not change in females. Oatp1 was strongly downregulated in males after 21 days. An opposite effect was observed in Bcrp after 21 days: downregulation in males and upregulation in females. Females showed a dose- and time-dependent decrease of progesterone. Despite the sex differences, the final balance in OTA toxicokinetics at renal cell level does not seem to support a higher accumulation of OTA in male kidneys

Probing neutrino masses with future galaxy redshift surveys

    Get PDF
We perform a new study of future sensitivities of galaxy redshift surveys to the free-streaming effect caused by neutrino masses, adding the information on cosmological parameters from measurements of primary anisotropies of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). Our reference cosmological scenario has nine parameters and three different neutrino masses, with a hierarchy imposed by oscillation experiments. Within the present decade, the combination of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and CMB data from the PLANCK experiment will have a 2-sigma detection threshold on the total neutrino mass close to 0.2 eV. This estimate is robust against the inclusion of extra free parameters in the reference cosmological model. On a longer term, the next generation of experiments may reach values of order sum m_nu = 0.1 eV at 2-sigma, or better if a galaxy redshift survey significantly larger than SDSS is completed. We also discuss how the small changes on the free-streaming scales in the normal and inverted hierarchy schemes are translated into the expected errors from future cosmological data.Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures. Determinants of self-rated health perception in a sample of a physically active population: PLENUFAR VI study

    Get PDF
The aim of this study was to investigate determinants of self-rated health (SRH) perception in Spanish adults. This cross-sectional study including data from 11,342 participants from the Spanish PLENUFAR VI study. SRH status was grouped in two categories ('good'/'poor') and the associations of socio-demographic characteristics, lifestyles, diet adequacy and chronic disease with SRH were assessed. After adjusting for relevant confounders, the risk ratios (RR) and (95% confidence intervals) for poor SRH were 1.05 (1.03-1.07) for each hour of increment of sitting, 1.56 (1.30-1.88) for short (>= 5 h vs. 7-8 h) sleep duration, 0.63 (0.55-0.72) for vigorous (vs. light) physical activity, 0.61 (0.50-0.74) for adequate (vs. non-adequate) diet. Activities like jogging [RR for each unit of increment in the METs-h/day = 0.87 (0.82-0.92)], gymnastics [0.87 (0.81-0.93)], biking [0.91 (0.85-0.98)], and track and field [0.94 (0.89-0.98)], were associated with better health perception. Normally weight participants with any chronic disease had lower probability to report poor SRH than overweight/obese participants with any chronic disease. Frequent consumption of bread (>2 servings/day) was associated with a lower adjusted mean of health perception scale, while higher consumption of vegetables and fruit or fish were associated with higher values, concerning good SRH. We can conclude that normal-weight participants even suffering a chronic disease had lower probability to report poor health perception than participants with overweight/obesity and a chronic disease especially for hypertension and diabetes. Activities like jogging, gymnastics, biking, and track and field, and a higher consumption of fruits, vegetables and fish, were associated with better health rated perception

The lithium stellarator experiment. TJ-II as a benchmark

    No full text
In the last years, lithium wall conditioning has been carried out in several fusion devices (Tokamaks, Compact Toruses) by different techniques, providing in many instances record values of plasma parameters and enhanced plasma reproducibility. Behind these findings are the low recycling, low contamination and non-coronal enhanced radiative power dissipation properties of Li. Stellarators are best suited for reactor concepts as far as they basically free from extreme thermal load events. However, the potential problem of impurity accumulation must be taken into account. Therefore, the use of low Z elements as PFC would be highly desirable. In the present work, the plasma performance of the TJ-II Heliac under Li-coated wall conditions with lithium is described. Compared to previous coatings, lithium has produced the best plasma performance to date, leading to the achievement of record values in plasma density and energy confinement. In the present work, the impact of the Li coating operation on reactor relevant issues, such as particle exhaust and retention, high-density operation, confinement characteristics and plasma wall interaction issues is stressed.

Comparison of two strategies for the start-up of a biological reactor for the treatment of hypersaline effluents from a table olive packaging industry

Biological treatment of hypersaline effluents with high organic matter concentrations is difficult to carry out and it can require a long start-up phase. This is the case of the treatment of fermentation brines from the table olive packaging (FTOP) industries. These effluents are characterized by conductivity values around 90 mS/cm, COD around 15,000 mg/L and total phenols concentration around 1000 mg/L. In this work, FTOP has been treated in two sequencing batch reactors (SBRs) operated in parallel. In each SBR a different start-up strategy has been carried out. In the SBR-2, biomass was previously acclimated to high salinity using simulated wastewater without phenolic compounds, meanwhile in the SBR-1, FTOP was added from the beginning of the start-up. Results indicated more operational problems in the SBR-2 consisting in a higher deflocculation that drove to high turbidity values in the effluent. Besides, at the end of the start-up, the SBR-1 reached higher COD removal efficiencies than SBR-2 (88% and 73%, respectively). In both reactors, an increase in gamma-Proteobacteria in the microbial population was observed for increasing conductivities. In addition, phenols were completely removed in both reactors at the end of the start-up, what implied very low toxicity values in the effluent. The authors of this work thank the financial support of CDTI (Centre for Industrial Technological Development) depending on the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation.Ferrer-Polonio, E.; Mendoza Roca, JA.; Iborra Clar, A.; Alonso Molina, JL.; Pastor Alcañiz, L. A search for an unexpected asymmetry in the production of e(+)mu(-) and e(-)mu(+) pairs in proton-proton collisions recorded by the ATLAS detector at root s=13 TeV

    Get PDF
This search, a type not previously performed at ATLAS, uses a comparison of the production cross sections for e(+)mu(-) and e(-)mu(+) pairs to constrain physics processes beyond the Standard Model. It uses 139 fb(-1) of proton-proton collision data recorded at root s = 13 TeV at the LHC. Targeting sources of new physics which prefer final states containing e(+)mu(-) and e(-)mu(+), the search contains two broad signal regions which are used to provide model-independent constraints on the ratio of cross sections at the 2% level. The search also has two special selections targeting supersymmetric models and leptoquark signatures. Observations using one of these selections are able to exclude, at 95% confidence level, singly produced smuons with masses up to 640 GeV in a model in which the only other light sparticle is a neutralino when the R-parity-violating coupling lambda(23)(1)' is close to unity. Observations using the other selection exclude scalar leptoquarks with masses below 1880 GeV when g(1R)(eu) = g(1R)(mu c) = 1, at 95% confidence level. The limit on the coupling reduces to g(1R)(eu) = g(1R)(mu c) = 0.46 for a mass of 1420 GeV

Brine recovery from hypersaline wastewaters from table olive processing by combination of biological treatment and membrane technologies

[EN] The fermentation brines from table olive processing (FTOP) are hypersaline effluents (conductivities higher than 75 mS·cm-1) with high organic matter concentrations (COD around 10 g·L-1), which also include phenolic compounds (between 700 and 1500 mg TY·L-1). In this work, an integrated process for the FTOP reuse as brine in the table olive processing has been evaluated. This integrated process consisted of a biological treatment followed by a membrane system, which included ultrafiltration (UF) plus nanofiltration (NF). The biological treatment was carried out by 6 L laboratory sequencing batch reactor (SBR). UF and NF were performed in laboratory plants for flat membranes of 0.0125 and 0.0072 m2, respectively. Each stream generated during the FTOP treatment (SBR effluent, and UF and NF permeates) were evaluated. The SBR eliminated around 80% of COD and 71% of total phenols concentration. In the final NF permeate the COD concentration was lower than 125 mg·L-1; while the turbidity, colour and phenolic compounds, were completely removed. The authors of this work thank the financial support of CDTI (Centre for Development Technological Industrial) depending on the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation.Ferrer-Polonio, E.; Carbonell Alcaina, C.; Mendoza Roca, JA.; Iborra Clar, A.; Alvarez Blanco, S.; Bes-Piá, M.; Pastor Alcañiz, L. Atmospheric effects on extensive air showers observed with the Surface Detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory

    Get PDF
Atmospheric parameters, such as pressure (P), temperature (T) and density, affect the development of extensive air showers initiated by energetic cosmic rays. We have studied the impact of atmospheric variations on extensive air showers by means of the surface detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory. The rate of events shows a ~10% seasonal modulation and ~2% diurnal one. We find that the observed behaviour is explained by a model including the effects associated with the variations of pressure and density. The former affects the longitudinal development of air showers while the latter influences the Moliere radius and hence the lateral distribution of the shower particles. The model is validated with full simulations of extensive air showers using atmospheric profiles measured at the site of the Pierre Auger Observatory.Comment: 24 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in Astroparticle Physic

The exposure of the hybrid detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory

    Get PDF
The Pierre Auger Observatory is a detector for ultra-high energy cosmic rays. It consists of a surface array to measure secondary particles at ground level and a fluorescence detector to measure the development of air showers in the atmosphere above the array. The "hybrid" detection mode combines the information from the two subsystems. We describe the determination of the hybrid exposure for events observed by the fluorescence telescopes in coincidence with at least one water-Cherenkov detector of the surface array. A detailed knowledge of the time dependence of the detection operations is crucial for an accurate evaluation of the exposure. We discuss the relevance of monitoring data collected during operations, such as the status of the fluorescence detector, background light and atmospheric conditions, that are used in both simulation and reconstruction.Comment: Paper accepted by Astroparticle Physic
