    Get PDF

Polygenic analysis of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria using 16S rDNA, amoA, and amoB genes

Finding a unique molecular marker capable of quickly providing rigorous and useful phylogenetic information would facilitate assessing the diversity of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria in environmental samples. Since only one of several available markers can be used at a time in these kinds of studies, the 16S rDNA, amoA and amoB genes were evaluated individually and then compared in order to identify the one that best fits the information provided by the composite dataset. Distance-based neighbor-joining and maximum parsimony trees generated using the sequences of the three mentioned genes were analyzed with respect to the combined polygenic trees. Maximum parsimony trees were found to be more accurate than distance-based ones, and the polygenic topology was shown to best fit the information contained in the sequences. However, the taxonomic and phylogenetic information provided by the three markers separately was also valid. Therefore, either of the functional markers (amoA or amoB ) can be used to trace ammonia oxidizers in environmental studies in which only one gene can be targeted. [Int Microbiol 2005; 8(2):103-110

The town of Lorca (Murcia, Spain) was badly damaged last May 11, 2011, when two earthquakes hit the city causing eight deaths, hundreds of injuries and countless material damage. Since then numerous projects of urban rehabilitation and of heritage have been undertaken. In 2014, the Research Group “Territorial Dynamics, Analysis and Management”, of the University of Murcia, gets funding from the Seneca Foundation (Agency for Science and Technology in the Region of Murcia) to develop the research project “Cultural tourism in the revitalization of the historical heritage of Lorca: actors and strategies”. We are aware that rehabilitation requires a revitalization in parallel, capable of causing a positive and complete gentrification, and therefore we propose the analysis of the relationships and interdependencies between tourism, heritage, historic towns and local development

Microbial colonisation of synthetic materials is a great concern in many fields, e.g., in implant surgery and medical devices; therefore biocompatible hydrophilic organic materials with inherent antimicrobial properties are of current research interest. In this work, we describe the preparation of antibacterial and biocompatible polymeric film based on N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone (VP) and 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate (HEA), using ethyleneglycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA), and synthetic acrylic monomer containing sulfadiazine chemically anchored. The synthesised polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP)-based films were characterized by different techniques (1H and 13C NMR, ATR-FTIR, SEM, and TGA). In this study, the biophysical responses of bacteria and L929 cells towards the prepared materials as model device surfaces were evaluated. The membrane that contains the anchored sulfadiazine moiety showed excellent antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli as well as good biocompatibility. Based on the experimental results, this material is a good candidate for medical applications as a biomaterial.Spanish Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad-Feder (MAT2014-54137-R and MAT2012-31709) and by the Consejería de Educación – Junta de Castilla y León – Feder (BU061U16

Test de velocidad en minibásquet: estudio piloto

    Get PDF

Profesor contratado doctor con plaza vinculada al Hospital Universitario San Cecilio de Granada Grupo de Investigación RICORS Enfermedades Inflamatorias; RD21/0002/0011,Purpose: Twin–twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS) is a condition wherein monochorionic twins share a common placenta with placental anastomoses between the two foetal circulations. Most infants who survive TTTS are born prematurely. This study aimed to determine whether fetoscopic laser ablation (FLA) can reduce the risk of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) and whether TTTS was a risk factor for ROP. Methods: This single-centre, retrospective, comparative study included 32 monochorionic twins with TTTS matched for gestational age, birthweight and sex to premature twins and singletons without TTTS (n = 68; twins, n = 34; and singletons, n = 34) born between 2003 and 2022. A single ophthalmologist recorded the fundus findings. FLA was performed using Solomon's technique to separate the vascular systems of the twins with TTTS. Results: The gestational age and weight of premature infants with TTTS treated with FLA were significantly higher than those of untreated infants (p = 0.001 and p = 0.001, respectively); however, the hyaline membrane grade was lower (p = 0.004). A significant increase in weight (g/day) (p = 0.002) and lesser avascular area in the peripheral temporal retina (p = 0.045) was observed at postnatal week 4. The risk of ROP in the FLA group was 2.6 times (13.3% vs. 35.3%) lower than that in the non-FLA group; however, this difference was not significant. The incidence of any stage of ROP (25% vs. 18%) and treatment for ROP type 1 (6.25% vs. 5.9%) did not differ significantly between monochorionic twins with TTTS and premature infants without TTTS. Conclusion: The gestational age of premature infants with TTTS treated with FLA was higher than that of untreated infants. Moreover, a reduction in complications of prematurity was also observed. Laser fetoscopy in twin–twin transfusion syndrome may reduce the risk of ROP, but the difference was not statistically significant in this small study. Based on Farber’s burnout proposal, the first aim of this study was to examine the psychometric properties of the short version of the Burnout Clinical Subtype Questionnaire (BCSQ-12) in secondary school teachers. The second aim of the study was to examine possible differences in the burnout subtypes in terms of gender, type of school, and teaching experience. Two different samples of 584 (M¿=¿45.04; 43% males) and 106 (M¿=¿45.50; 40% males) secondary school teachers participated in the study. Results obtained from both the exploratory structural equation modeling (ESEM) and the confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) supported the three-factor structure of the BCSQ-12, comprised of overload, lack of development, and neglect. Further, the BCSQ-12 showed adequate composite reliability. The negative relationships between the three-factor structure of burnout, teachers’ basic psychological need satisfaction, and teachers’ job satisfaction provide evidence of the nomological validity of BCSQ-12. Finally, female teachers, state school teachers, and experienced teachers reported a greater risk of suffering one or more of these three burnout subtypes. Theoretical, methodological, and practical contributions of the BCSQ-12 are discussed, highlighting the importance of assessing the three burnout subtypes separately

Mating structure of the blue and red shrimp, Aristeus antennatus (Risso, 1816) characterized by relatedness analysis

Understanding life history variation and strategies is crucial for stock assessment and fisheries management due to the direct effects on population dynamics, effective population size, sex-ratios, levels of inbreeding, and relatedness among individuals. Aristeus antennatus (En ─ Blue and red shrimp; Fr ─ Crevette rouge; Sp ─ Gamba rosada) is one of the most exploited demersal resources in the Western Mediterranean Sea. However, information regarding the mating system and mate choice preferences remains largely unknown. Advances in molecular genetic markers and methods of inferring biological relationships among individuals have facilitated new insights into the reproductive dynamics of the species in the wild. Here, we used microsatellite markers to examine the A. antennatus mating system and putative mate choice preferences. Our results provided clear evidence of polyandry and polygyny. Relatedness analyses, together with FST and DAPC values showed females exhibited a mating bias towards unrelated males. Mating males were inferred from spermatophores and suggested males were sympatric with females and were also from other spawning grounds. Our findings provided the first description of the reproductive behavior of blue and red shrimpThis work was supported by a grant from Spanish Ministerio de Economia y Competitividad (CTM2014-54648-C2-2-R) to MIR.
