The bumpy gestation process of the Lisbon Treaty, which sets out the main points of the European constitution, raises some
doubts about the conception of citizenship that are driving the EU institutions. This article will attempt to provide some
considerations for thought on this concept of citizenship by reference to the broader ideal of cosmopolitan citizenship. To
determine if European citizenship is moving towards this cosmopolitan ideal or not, will consider three main issues: 1) the
identity, 2) the link between nationality and citizenship and 3) the mechanisms for citizen participation and guarantees of
democratic legitimacy
CFD study of carotid artery haemodynamic flows with experimental validation
The behavior of the veins and arteries under some potentially life-threatening situations has been the object of study for a long time. However, these studies have been mostly carried out experimentally, usually conditioned by the situation and procedure of the analysis itself. That is the reason why during the past years, with the development of computational fluid dynamics, there has been a growing interest in creating models to simulate these situations, in order to imitate blood behavior in a generic way. Therefore, during this study, a CFD analysis of the internal flow through the carotid artery bifurcation has been carried out. In first place, starting from a three-dimensional geometry of the artery, a meshing process has been realized using the open-access software Salome, including the optimization of the mesh itself. Later, multiple simulations have been carried out with different characteristics in order to end up obtaining a model as close with the reality as possible, and numeric results have been obtained using the open-access software OpenFOAM. Finally, these results have been compared and validated with the results of previous numerical and experimental projects, and comparisons between different viscosity models have been carried out based on the results obtained
Teleological structure of scientific and mathematical education
One of the main educational objectives in the current Spanish curricula is to develop mathematical and
scientific competences, understood as the set of skills and abilities needed to apply Mathematics and
Science in situations where are required. This is therefore closely related, on one hand, to the
functionality of the knowledge, in the sense of its usefulness in problem solving and in mathematical
and science modeling problems. And, on the other hand, is related to the understanding of disciplinary
knowledge, a cognitive phenomenon that enables and gives competence to the individual to elaborate
contextualized and accurate answers. These answers involve the use of mathematical and scientific
knowledge in some of the categories of their phenomenological and epistemological dimensions. For
this reason, in this work we carry out a theoretical and reflexive analysis that tries to determine which
aspects of the Mathematics and Science Education should be promoted in order to optimize the
formative dimension of an individual in these disciplines. This dimension, frequently forgotten in
learning and teaching processes, turns out to be, in conjunction with the functional and instrumental
dimensions, necessary to acquire the appropriate knowledge in Mathematics and Science that will
enable future citizens to permanently adapt to the environment and eventually transform it positively.
The results of the analysis show the components of this dimension that should be prioritized in the
Science and Mathematics Education: the intellectual autonomy, understood as the ability to think for
ourselves and to put in use our abilities and skills to generate information to solve real life problems
and to make the right decisions; the moral autonomy, defined as the capacity to face with real life
problems with ethical implications; and the social autonomy, understood as the aptitude to make
decisions using social abilities and skills.
Modeling the AC Electrokinetic Behavior of Semiconducting Spheres
We study theoretically the dielectrophoresis and electrorotation of a semiconducting microsphere immersed in an aqueous electrolyte. To this end, the particle polarizability is calculated from first principles for arbitrary thickness of the Debye layers in liquid and semiconductor. We show that the polarizability dispersion arises from the combination of two relaxation interfacial phenomena: charging of the electrical double layer and the Maxwell–Wagner relaxation. We also calculate the particle polarizability in the limit of thin electrical double layers, which greatly simplifies the analytical calculations. Finally, we show the model predictions for two relevant materials (ZnO and doped silicon) and discuss the limits of validity of the thin double layer approximation
Dipolophoresis and Travelling-Wave Dipolophoresis of Metal Microparticles
We study theoretically and numerically the electrokinetic behavior of metal microparticles immersed in aqueous electrolytes. We consider small particles subjected to non-homogeneous ac electric fields and we describe their motion as arising from the combination of electrical forces (dielectrophoresis) and the electroosmotic flows on the particle surface (induced-charge electrophoresis). The net particle motion is known as dipolophoresis. We also study the particle motion induced by travelling electric fields. We find analytical expressions for the dielectrophoresis and induced-charge electrophoresis of metal spheres and we compare them with numerical solutions. This validates our numerical method, which we also use to study the dipolophoresis of metal cylinders.Spanish Research Agency MCI under contract PGC2018-099217-B-I00
Environmental attitudes of European tourists: A multilevel analysis
Literature shows that heterogeneity in willingness to pay for traveling is explained by regional clusters because not all the tourists are equally sensitive to income and price adjustments. This paper demonstrated that such heterogeneity in tourist behavior is also shown in environmental considerations when they are making decisions about their holiday plans. Popular support for environmental protection among tourists from EU-27 countries were investigated. The findings are congruent with the hypothesis that environment support depends not only on individual characteristics of themselves but also of certain contextual variables related to their place of residence.Universidad de Málaga.
