On the link between the coefficient of determination and polarization

In this paper, taking as starting point the link between polarization and dispersion, we reformulate the measure of polarization of Zhang and Kanbur (2001) using the decomposition of the variance instead of the decomposition of the Theil index. The proposed measure is equivalent to the coefficient of determination of an ANOVA Linear Model, that explains the income of the households as a function of any population characteristic e.g. education, gender, occupation etc. This result provides an alternative way to analyze polarization by household characteristics and at the same time allows us to compare sub-populations via the estimated coefficients of the ANOVA model.Polarization, coefficient of determination, ANOVA model.

Income distribution and the effect of the financial crisis on the Italian and Spanish labour markets

This paper aims at estimating the costs of the current crisis in terms of income distribution and poverty taking into account by means of microsimulation techniques - the change in employment status in Spain and Italy. We construct a micro simulation analysis on the impact of the crisis on unemployment, household income, and inequality using the European Statistics on Income and Living Conditions Surveys, and Labour Force Surveys data for Italy and Spain with reference to different types of households. We consider the effect of joblessness on household income and well-being and the impact of different systems of unemployment benefit on unemployment sustainability. Our focus is not only on the pecuniary dimension of well-being, but also in terms of the costs of limited access to medical and dental treatment and analyses

Género y sexo como variables moduladoras del comportamiento sexual en jóvenes universitarios

En este estudio se pretende indagar la posible relación de las variables sexo y género con el comportamiento sexual en personas universitarias. Para ello se aplicaron a 306 estudiantes universitarios tres cuestionarios: el Inventario de Roles Sexuales de Bem (BSRI, 1974), para operativizar la variable género, y otros dos, elaborados a partir del Inventario Sexual utilizado por Hsu et al. (1994), sobre conductas y fantasías sexuales. Se analizaron las propiedades estructurales y psicométricas de los cuestionarios, obteniéndose óptimos resultados, en concordancia con los referidos en la literatura. Se confirma la relación existente entre el género (masculino, femenino, andrógino e indiferenciado), el sexo (hombre-mujer) y los comportamientos sexuales, si bien esta relación es inferior a la esperada. Using Mobile Devices for Improving Learning Outcomes and Teachers’ Professionalization

Teaching in higher education is changing due to the influence of technology. More and more technological tools are replacing old teaching methods and strategies. Thus, mobile devices are being positioned as a key tool for new ways of understanding educational practices. The present paper responds to a systematic review about the benefits that mobile devices have for university students’ learning. Using inclusion and exclusion criteria in theWeb of Science and Scopus databases, 16 articles were selected to argue why Mobile learning (Mlearning) has become a modern innovative approach. The results point to an improvement in students’ learning through Mlearning, factors that encourage the use of mobile devices in universities have been identified, and e ective mobile applications in improving teaching and learning processes have been presented. The inclusion of this methodology requires a new role for teachers, whose characterization is also specified

Una asignatura on-line de Historia de los Algoritmos

This paper describes the objectives, contents learning methodology and results of an on-line course about History of Algorithms for engineering students of the Polytechnic University of Madrid. This course is conducted in a virtual environment based on Moodle, with an educational model centered at student which includes a detailed planning of learning activities. . Our experience indicates that this subject is is highly motivating for students and the virtual environment facilitates competencies development

A novel low-voltage reconfigurable ΣΔ modulator for 4G wireless receivers

This paper presents a new adaptable cascade ΣΔ modulator architecture fo r low-voltage multi-stan- dard applications. It uses two reconfiguration strategies: a programmable global resonation and a variable loop-filter order. These techniques are properly com- bined in a novel topology that allows to increase the effec- tive resolution in a given bandwidth, whereas keeping relaxed output swing requirements and high robustness to mismatch and to non-linearities of the amplifiers. Caracterización del régimen bioclimático medio del área metropolitana de Madrid, mediante la aplicación de la temperatura fisiológica (PET)

En este trabajo hemos caracterizado el bioclima del área madrileña a partir de los datos diarios del observatorio del aeropuerto de Barajas. Hemos obtenido la temperatura fisiológica (PET), máxima y mínima diaria, durante el periodo 1985-2004 y los diferentes umbrales de confort, siguiendo la metodología propuesta por la comisión 6 de la ISB. Se observa que, a partir de 2000, han aumentado los días extremadamente cálidos y se han adelantado estas situaciones a los meses de mayo y junio, descendiendo significativamente en Septiembre

Los desafíos ambientales de las poblaciones indígenas en el Ártico

The special vulnerability of indigenous peoples in the Arctic has increased in recent decades due to various environmental challenges. On the one hand, global warming is causing the melting of this region and the lack of important natural resources for these peoples. These changes will not only affect their quality of life, but also to their cultural identity, since climatic conditions in which its existence has developed over the centuries are changing very rapidly. On the other hand, the European Union has adopted a series of trade measures prohibiting the importation and marketing of seal products in its territory, although it allows the trade of seal products when captured by Inuit communities. The exception was introduced to protect them since seal hunting is an important element of their culture and their survival, but its compatibility with the law of the World Trade Organization has been challengedLa especial vulnerabilidad de los pueblos indígenas del Ártico se ha visto acrecentada en las últimas décadas debido a distintos desafíos medioambientales. Por un lado, el calentamiento global es causante del deshielo de esta región y la carencia de recursos naturales importantes para estas poblaciones. La formación en competencias en la universidad a través de proyectos de trabajo y herramientas 2.0. Análisis de una experiencia

En aquest treball es presenta una proposta d’innovació docent en el context universitari, en la qual s’ha optat per la combinació de diferents metodologies actives amb el suport de les TIC per a desenvolupar un projecte de treball. La peculiaritat de l’experiència és el disseny d’un context d’aprenentatge blended e-learning, amb un enfocament constructivista de l’aprenentatge, en el qual tres grups d’estudiants diferents participen en un mateix projecte, amb un paper actiu i amb un aprenentatge que es veu afavorit per l’ús de Google +, Google Docs, Twitter i un blog. Per a presentar l’experiència, es mostra el disseny i desenvolupament del projecte, i els resultats, a partir de l’opinió dels estudiants, com a protagonistes del seu propi aprenentatge. Els resultats ens permeten saber la valoració que fan els alumnes de l’adquisició de competències en aquesta experiència i en altres de prèvies, a més d’identificar les competències adquirides en relació amb les diferents propostes metodològiques aplicades. De les conclusions de l’experiència destaquem que el treball per projectes aporta beneficis múltiples pel fet de millorar la participació activa dels estudiants, la motivació i implicació que tenen, el desenvolupament de competències i l’aprenentatge significatiu. És destacable l’alta valoració que rep la tutoria entre iguals com a modalitat de treball per a potenciar el desenvolupament de competències i com els estudiants perceben que la participació en aquest projecte ha permès treballar o adquirir les competències plantejades d’una manera més eficaç que en altres experiències formatives que han viscut en la seva trajectòria universitària.This article presents a university-context teaching innovation proposal that combines various ICT-supported active methodologies to undertake a project. The experience’s feature is the design of a blended learning context based on a constructivist learning approach, in which the participating students – divided into three different groups – work on the same project and play an active role, and whose learning is fostered by the use Google+, Google Docs, Twitter and a blog. To present the experience, a description is given of how the project was designed and undertaken, followed by a presentation of the results obtained from the opinions of the students themselves, who were the protagonists of their own learning. The results show how the students rated competency acquisition in this and earlier experiences, and enabled the acquired competencies to be identified for each methodological proposal applied. The conclusions highlight the fact that project work has many benefits; it improves the students’ active participation, motivation and engagement, and enhances competency development and meaningful learning. Especially noteworthy are the high ratings given to peer tutoring as a work modality for strengthening competency development, and the fact that the students perceived that taking part in this project allowed them to work and acquire the proposed competencies more effectively than in other educational experiences that they had undertaken in the course of their university studies. En este trabajo se presenta una propuesta de innovación docente en el contexto universitario, en la que se ha optado por la combinación de diferentes metodologías activas con el apoyo de las TIC para desarrollar un proyecto de trabajo. La peculiaridad de la experiencia es el diseño de un contexto de aprendizaje blended e-learning, bajo un enfoque constructivista del aprendizaje, en el que tres grupos de estudiantes diferentes participan en un mismo proyecto, mostrando un papel activo y cuyo aprendizaje se ve favorecido por el uso de Google +, Google Docs, Twitter y un blog. Para presentar la experiencia, se muestra el diseño y desarrollo del proyecto, y los resultados, a partir de la opinión de los estudiantes, como protagonistas de su propio aprendizaje. De las conclusiones de la experiencia destacamos que el trabajo por proyectos aporta múltiples beneficios al mejorar la participación activa de los estudiantes, su motivación e implicación, el desarrollo de competencias y el aprendizaje significativo. Es destacable la alta valoración que recibe la tutoría entre iguales como modalidad de trabajo para potenciar el desarrollo de competencias, y cómo los estudiantes perciben que la participación en este proyecto ha permitido trabajar o adquirir las competencias planteadas de una manera más eficaz que en otras experiencias educativas que han vivido en su trayectoria universitaria
