The relationship of drug reimbursement with the price and the quality of pharmaceutical innovations
This paper studies the strategic interaction between pharmaceutical firms' pricing decisions and government agencies' reimbursement decisions which discriminate between patients by giving reimbursement rights to patients for whom the drug is most effective. We show that if the reimbursement decision preceeds the pricing decision, the agency only reimburses some patients if the private and public health benefits from the new drug diverge. That is, when (i) there are large externalities of consuming the drug and (ii) the difference in costs between the new drug and the alternative treatment is large. Alternatively, if the firm can commit to a price in advance of the reimbursement decision, we identify a strategic effect which implies that by committing to a high price ex ante, the firm can force a listing outcome and make the agency more willing to reimburse than in the absence of commitment
Variable stars in the VVV globular clusters
Indexación: Scopus.The VVV survey observed some of the most crowded and most obscured regions in the inner Milky Way during the last years. A significant sample of the less known globular clusters in our galaxy lie there. Combining the high-resolution, wide-field, near infrared capabilities of the survey camera, the use of 5 different filters, and multi-epoch observations, we are able to overcome many of the previous challenges that prevented a proper study of these objects. Particularly, the identification of the RR Lyrae stars in these globular clusters is proving to be a fundamental tool to establish accurately their distances and reddenings, and to infer information about the Oosterhoff dichotomy that Galactic globular clusters seem to follow. © The Authors, published by EDP Sciences, 2017.https://www.epj-conferences.org/articles/epjconf/pdf/2017/21/epjconf_puls2017_01022.pd
Seasonal dynamic factor analysis and bootstrap inference : application to electricity market forecasting
Year-ahead forecasting of electricity prices is an important issue in the current context of
electricity markets. Nevertheless, only one-day-ahead forecasting is commonly tackled up in
previous published works. Moreover, methodology developed for the short-term does not work
properly for long-term forecasting.
In this paper we provide a seasonal extension of the Non-Stationary Dynamic Factor Analysis,
to deal with the interesting problem (both from the economic and engineering point of view) of
long term forecasting of electricity prices. Seasonal Dynamic Factor Analysis (SeaDFA) allows
to deal with dimensionality reduction in vectors of time series, in such a way that extracts
common and specific components. Furthermore, common factors are able to capture not only
regular dynamics (stationary or not) but also seasonal one, by means of common factors
following a multiplicative seasonal VARIMA(p,d,q)Ă(P,D,Q)s model.
Besides, a bootstrap procedure is proposed to be able to make inference on all the parameters
involved in the model. A bootstrap scheme developed for forecasting includes uncertainty due
to parameter estimation, allowing to enhance the coverage of forecast confidence intervals.
Concerning the innovative and challenging application provided, bootstrap procedure developed
allows to calculate not only point forecasts but also forecasting intervals for electricity prices
Cell adhesion on ti surface with controlled roughness
In this report, the in situ interaction between Saos-2 osteoblast cells and a smooth Ti surface was examined over time. The adhesion kinetics and mechanisms of cellular proliferation were monitored by quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The rate of Saos-2 attachment on Ti surfaces, obtained from the measurements performed with the QCM, is a first-order reaction, with k=2.103 min1. The impedance measurements indicate that in the absence of cells, the Ti resistance diminishes over time (7 days), due to the presence of amino acids and proteins from the culture medium that have been a dsorbed, while in the presence of osteoblasts, this decrease is much greater because of the compounds generated by the cells that accelerate the dissolution of TiAdhesiĂłn de osteoblastos sobre una superficie de Ti de rugosidad controlada. En este trabajo, se ha estudiado la interacciĂłn in situ entre cĂ©lulas osteoblĂĄsticas Saos-2 y una superficie de Ti de rugosidad controlada a lo largo del tiempo. El estudio de la cinĂ©tica y los mecanismos de proliferaciĂłn celular de adhesiĂłn se ha realizado a travĂ©s de la microbalanza de cristal de cuarzo (QCM) y espectroscopĂa de impedancia electroquĂmica (EIS). La velocidad de adhesiĂłn de los osteoblastos sobre la superficie de Ti obtenida a travĂ©s de medidas con la QCM, sigue una reacciĂłn de primer orden, con k=2Ă10â3 minâ1. Coordinating heterogeneous IoT devices by means of the centralized vision of the SDN controller
The IoT (Internet of Things) has become a reality during recent years. The desire of having everything connected to the Internet results in clearly identified benefits that will impact on socio economic development. However, the exponential growth in the number of IoT devices and their heterogeneity open new challenges that must be carefully studied. Coordination among devices to adapt them to their users' context usually requires high volumes of data to be exchanged with the cloud. In order to reduce unnecessary communications and network overhead, this paper proposes a novel network architecture based on the Software-Defined Networking paradigm that allows IoT devices coordinate and adapt them within the scope of a particular context.Universidad de MĂĄlaga. Reinforcing the link between the double red clump and the X-shaped bulge of the Milky Way
The finding of a double red clump in the luminosity function of the Milky Way bulge has been interpreted as evidence for an X-shaped structure. Recently, an alternative explanation has been suggested, where the double red clump is an effect of multiple stellar populations in a classical spheroid. In this Letter we provide an observational assessment of this scenario and show that it is not consistent with the behaviour of the red clump across different lines of sight, particularly at high distances from the Galactic plane. Instead, we confirm that the shape of the red clump magnitude distribution closely follows the distance distribution expected for an X-shaped bulge at critical Galactic latitudes. We also emphasize some key observational properties of the bulge red clump that should not be neglected in the search for alternative scenarios
Electrostatic potential variations on stellarator magnetic surfaces in low collisionality regimes
The component of the neoclassical electrostatic potential that is
non-constant on the magnetic surface, that we denote by , can
affect radial transport of highly charged impurities, and this has motivated
its inclusion in some modern neoclassical codes. The number of neoclassical
simulations in which is calculated is still scarce, partly
because they are usually demanding in terms of computational resources,
especially at low collisionality. In this paper the size, the scaling with
collisionality and with aspect ratio, and the structure of on
the magnetic surface are analytically derived in the , and
superbanana-plateau regimes of stellarators close to omnigeneity; i. e.
stellarators that have been optimized for neoclassical transport. It is found
that the largest that the neoclassical equations admit scales
linearly with the inverse aspect ratio and with the size of the deviation from
omnigeneity. Using a model for a perturbed omnigeneous configuration, the
analytical results are verified and illustrated with calculations by the code
KNOSOS. The techniques, results and numerical tools employed in this paper can
be applied to neoclassical transport problems in tokamaks with broken

The VVV Survey reveals classical Cepheids tracing a young and thin stellar disk across the Galaxy's bulge
Solid insight into the physics of the inner Milky Way is key to understanding
our Galaxy's evolution, but extreme dust obscuration has historically hindered
efforts to map the area along the Galactic mid-plane. New comprehensive
near-infrared time-series photometry from the VVV Survey has revealed 35
classical Cepheids, tracing a previously unobserved component of the inner
Galaxy, namely a ubiquitous inner thin disk of young stars along the Galactic
mid-plane, traversing across the bulge. The discovered period (age) spread of
these classical Cepheids implies a continuous supply of newly formed stars in
the central region of the Galaxy over the last 100 million years.Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal Letters.
