Exact and efficient calculation of Lagrange multipliers in constrained biological polymers: Proteins and nucleic acids as example cases

In order to accelerate molecular dynamics simulations, it is very common to impose holonomic constraints on their hardest degrees of freedom. In this way, the time step used to integrate the equations of motion can be increased, thus allowing, in principle, to reach longer total simulation times. The imposition of such constraints results in an aditional set of Nc equations (the equations of constraint) and unknowns (their associated Lagrange multipliers), that must be solved in one way or another at each time step of the dynamics. In this work it is shown that, due to the essentially linear structure of typical biological polymers, such as nucleic acids or proteins, the algebraic equations that need to be solved involve a matrix which is banded if the constraints are indexed in a clever way. This allows to obtain the Lagrange multipliers through a non-iterative procedure, which can be considered exact up to machine precision, and which takes O(Nc) operations, instead of the usual O(Nc3) for generic molecular systems. We develop the formalism, and describe the appropriate indexing for a number of model molecules and also for alkanes, proteins and DNA. La valoración de las monarquías hasta Carlos V en una revista de la Segunda República Española: "Cruz y raya (1933-1936)"

Según su director, José Bergamín, la revista Cruz y Raya (1933-1936) fue fundada con el fin de dar apoyo a la causa republicana en España, rescatando los votos de los católicos, basándose en el hecho de que, aunque los católicos franceses eran mayoritamente republicanos, los católicos españoles eran mayoritariamente monárquicos. Siendo como era de talante liberal, Bergamín aceptó en su revista, los puntos de vista de algunos monárquicos, a la hora de evaluar los logros de los Reyes de España y de sus periodos históricos. En opinión de Bergamín, los reinados de la dinastía Borbónica fueron desastrosos para España, pero el propio Bergamín respeta a los que, desde el monarquismo, piensan lo contrario. Este dualismo está presente también en la misma Literatura Española.According to its director, José Bergamín, the review Cruz y Raya (1933-1936) was founded in order to support the Republican system in Spain, by rescuing the votes of the Catholics, based on the fact that, although the French Catholics were mostly Republicans, the Spanish Catholics were mostly Monarchists. Being a liberal, Bergamín accepted in his review, the points of view of some Monarchists, when evaluating the achievements of the Kings of Spain and their historical periods. In Bergamín’s assessment, the reigns of the Borbonic Dynasty were disastrous for Spain, but Bergamín himself is very respectful to those who, from their Monarchism, maintained the opposite. La valoración de las dinastías de los Austrias y de los Borbones, y de sus épocas, en una revista de la Segunda República Española: Cruz y Raya (1933-1936). Segunda Parte

Como se concluye a partir de las notas de pie de página, los artículos fueron escritos para la revista Cruz y Raya por diferentes autores y en diferentes años, pero nuestro trabajo de investigación consiste en clasificarlos a todos, sin entrar en muchos detalles, según la época a la que se refieren. En este artículo se trata de los escritores que eran a la vez poetas, soldados y místicos, entre los cuales debemos incluir a Lope, Cervantes, y a tantos otros; precisamente, los Místicos son los que han dado su mayor esplendor tanto a la Lengua como a la Literatura Castellana, y los que tienen puntos de contacto tanto con los Poetas Metafísicos Ingleses como con la Poesía Católica Inglesa Contemporánea. El problema de los Países Bajos; el Concilio de Trento y los jesuitas españoles en su lucha contra los Reformadores Luteranos; el anti-clericalismo de Antonio Pérez, y el estilo «herreriano» de El Escorial deben ser asignados a Felipe II y su época. Por otra parte, la Inquisición, Calderón de la Barca como Capellán Real, y la Paz de Westfalia (1648) (que puso fin a la época y sistema de Cristiandad) deben ser relacionados con el reinado de Felipe IV. La muerte de Carlos II, en 1700, implicó la peor imagen de España, el ocaso del Imperio Español, que significó el incremento tanto de la novela picaresca, como de los predicadores interesados en la moral. Por último, el único destacado de todo el siglo XVIII es Reynoso; Bécquer, Donoso Cortés, Valera, Galdós y Menéndez Pelayo son las figuras más relevantes del siglo XIX; y la «Generación del 98» y la «Generación del 27» son rasgos distintivos de la Literatura Española del siglo XX. Acabada la Primera República en España, Cánovas, en 1874, promovió la re-instauración de la Dinastía Borbónica, que duró hasta 1931 con la renuncia del rey Alfonso XIII, hecho que dio paso a la Segunda República (1931-1936) (la época de nuestra revista Cruz y Raya (1933-1936). Eficiència en la prestació de serveis mèdics a una UCI

A partir de 3830 pacients ingressats entre els anys 2006 i 2010 a la UCI de l'HUGTiP, estudiem quines variables afecten a la durada de l'estada (LOS) a la UCI. Hem elaborat un model de regressió multilineal per predir LOS on hi ha 5 variables explicatives. S'analitzen els 3 indicadors per predir la probabilitat de mortalitat: l'MPM, l'APACHE II i el SAPS II. Mitjançant la tècnica corba ROC acompanyada de la prova U de Mann-Whitney es veu que tots tres mètodes discriminen raonablement si un pacient acabarà morint o no. Hem vist que els mètodes predictors MPM i SAPS II tenen un error relatiu proper a un 50% (pronòstic més pessimista que la realitat), sigui quina sigui la gravetat real. Fem la composició d'una rotació i una projecció que permeten interpretar independentment la severitat del pronòstic i el seu canvi en 24 hores. . El grado de ajuste entre mortalidad esperada y mortalidad real ajustada a índices pronósticos es un indicador objetivo, ampliamente aceptado. Se trata de desarrollar y validar este indicador con la ayuda de modelos estructurales y modelos lineales generalizados

Wikileaks y el nuevo ecosistema informativo : Wikileaks and the new informative ecosystem

nternet se ha convertido en una he rramienta rápida y útil para divulgar noticias de gran relevancia mundial, como los recientes acontecimientos políticos de Túnez y Egipto. Esa inmediatez y la ausencia de fronteras informativas evidencian un cambio en el Pe riodismo Político, ya que se pierde de vista la figura del profesional de la información, cuyo papel de intermediario entre la realidad y el público es asumido por el propio internau ta, que participa en la construcción y elaboración de los contenidos. Con el objetivo de describir ese cambio, se realiza un estudio de caso de la web de noticias Wikileaks, fundada en 2006 por el hacker australiano Julian Assange, que se dedica a divulgar informes filtrados y datos confidenciales acerca de la forma de actuar de los distintos gobiernos de todo el mundo. El trabajo propuesto parte de un estudio documental bibliográfico sobre Wikileaks, especialmente de la publicación de más de 250.000 cables reservados, que remitían las embajadas estadounidenses en todo el mundo hacia la Secretaría de Estado, lo que ha originado un autént ico ‘cablegate’, un escándalo político comparable a lo que en su día supuso el Watergate. En la parte analítica nos decantamos por un método cualitativo no experimental, centrándonos en los contenidos publicados en diarios digitales sobre el caso Wikileaks. Así se podrá afirmar que Assange y su web marcan un cambio en el ecosistema informativo. Aparece una nueva forma de hacer Periodismo en la que la labor de los periodistas de calidad parece quedar relegada a pasar la criba y situar en contexto. El reto actual que se abre ante el periodismo político es lograr articular su nueva misión dentro del panorama informativo con los tres elementos que aportan su valor añadido: ser testigo, de scifrar e interpretar la realidad que nos rodea.nternet has become a quick and usef ul tool to spread news of great global importance, such as recent politi cal events in Tunisia and Egypt. This immediacy and the lack of information borders show a change in political journalism, because it loses sight of the information professional, whose role of intermediary between actual reality and th e public is assumed by the own surfer, who participates in construction and development of contents. In order to describe this change, it takes a case study of website Wikileaks, founded in 2006 by the Australian hacker Julian Assange, devoted to disclose filtered reports and confidential datas about the modus operandi of various Governments around the world. The proposed work starts from a documentary bibliographical study on Wikileaks, particularly the publication of more than 250.000 confidential cables, that were sent by American embassies around the wo rld to the Secretary of State, which has created a true 'cablegate', a political scandal comparable to that once marked the Watergate. In the analytical part we chose a qualitative not experimental method, focusing on the content published in online newspape rs about the Wikileaks case. So you can say that Assange and his web make a chan ge in the informative ecosystem. A new way of doing journalism rises in which qu ality journalistic work appears to be pushed to sift out and put in context. The current challenge opened to political journalism is to articulate a new mission within the informative landscape with the three elements that bring added value: to witness, to decipher and to interpret the reality around us

Herramienta de planificación y dimensionamiento para redes WiMAX

A software tool for planning and dimensioning Wireless Networks based on standard 802.16 is presented in this paper. Due to the deployment of communication systems based on this standard, it is necessary a tool which allows an easy implementation and dimensioning of this type of networks. With this tool the user will be able to evaluate point to point and point to multipoint networks, obtaining results such as losses in the link, power received, signal noise rate, coverage or bit rates the network is able to handle. For that purpose, the tool will employ technical specifications of transmitters and receivers, design parameters of the network and different propagation models

El recurso de amparo frente a la negativa a plantear la cuestión prejudicial ante el Tribunal de Justicia de la Comunidad Europea

El artículo 177 del Tratado CEE regula el mecanismo de la cuestión prejudicial ante el Tribunal de Luxemburgo, destinado a resolver las dudas de los órganos jurisdiccionales internos en la aplicación del Derecho comunitario. Nos interesa en este estudio analizar si un particular puede pedir amparo del Tribunal constitucional cuando un resolución judicial interna, que pone fin a la via processal ordinaria, no ha planteado, debiando hacerlo, la cuestión prejudicial ante el Tribunal de Justicia de la Comunidad Europea

The profitability of value-added products in dairy farm diversification initiatives

A more open and competitive dairy market has encouraged certain dairy farms to adopt value-adding strategies in order to achieve a higher profitability, which may be important for farms’ survival. This paper investigated the role of some product characteristics in the profitability of value-added products in these farms. For this purpose, we used a unique database of 265 different products commercialized by 49 Spanish dairy farms that offers information on nine attributes of each product. Using hedonic models as a baseline, we examined the influence of these attributes on the margin per liter (ML) of the products. The results of the regression indicated that cheese and yogurt generated 0.688 and 1.518 € more of margin per liter than liquid milk. Similarly, we found a set of attributes that have a positive influence on ML, including possession of a certificate of protected designation of origin (PDO), the milk-type composition (proportion of sheep milk), a longer expiration period, and involvement in direct marketing strategies (DMS). However, other recognized attributes such as organic labeling, maturation period, size of the sales unit and returnable packaging did not have a significant influence on ML. Our findings also showed that firms producing more elaborated products as cheese and yogurt need a lower percentage of their production to cover the fixed costs associated to transformation and commercialization. Overall, our results revealed that the elaboration of value-added dairy products improves the profitability of dairy farms
