How Baccalaureate Nursing Students Value an Interprofessional Patient Safety Course for Professional Development
Nursing students need foundation knowledge and skills to keep patients safe in continuously changing health care environments. A gap exists in our knowledge of the value students place on interprofessional patient safety education. The purpose of this exploratory, mixed methods study was to understand nursing students' attitudes about the value of an interprofessional patient safety course to their professional development and its role in health professions curricula. Qualitative and quantitative data were collected from formative course performance measures, course evaluations, and interviews with six nursing students. The qualitative themes of awareness, ownership, and action emerged and triangulated with the descriptive quantitative results from student performance and course evaluations. Students placed high value on the course and essential nature of interprofessional patient safety content. These findings provide a first step toward integration of interprofessional patient safety education into nursing curricula and in meeting the Institute of Medicine's goals for the nursing profession

Campaigning against workplace âsexual harassmentâ in the UK:Law, discourse and the news press c. 1975 â 2005
This article examines how and in what ways workplace âsexual harassmentâ achieved social and legal recognition in the UK news press following its importation from North America in the mid-1970s. It assesses the role of feminist campaigners working within institutions (trade unions, human rights advocacy, the Equal Opportunities Commission and journalism itself) in shifting public discourse and in using the media to educate and promote social change. We demonstrate that the trajectory was far from a linear progression. Initial hostility within the popular press in the early 1980s was replaced with sympathetic coverage across the party-political spectrum by 1990. However, this consensus broke down in the 1990s as a result of politicised and polarised coverage of a series of claims brought by women in the services and armed forces against the backdrop of debates about âcompensation cultureâ and membership of the European Union. Whilst change was effected at the level of employment law, formal practice and in the human resources policies of larger employers, âsexual harassment mythsâ were resilient as a thread within âeveryday cultural discourseâ and, by implication, within informal workplace cultures
Detection of OH absorption against PSR B1849+00
We have searched for OH absorption against seven pulsars using the Arecibo
telescope. In both OH mainlines (at 1665 and 1667 MHz), deep and narrow
absorption features were detected toward PSR B1849+00. In addition, we have
detected several absorption and emission features against B33.6+0.1, a nearby
supernova remnant (SNR). The most interesting result of this study is that a
pencil-sharp absorption sample against the PSR differs greatly from the
large-angle absorption sample observed against the SNR. If both the PSR and the
SNR probe the same molecular cloud then this finding has important implications
for absorption studies of the molecular medium, as it shows that the statistics
of absorbing OH depends on the size of the background source. We also show that
the OH absorption against the PSR most likely originates from a small (<30
arcsec) and dense (>10^5 cm^-3) molecular clump.Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures. Accepted for publication in Ap
Detecting sterile dark matter in space
Space-based instruments provide new and, in some cases, unique opportunities
to search for dark matter. In particular, if dark matter comprises sterile
neutrinos, the x ray detection of their decay line is the most promising
strategy for discovery. Sterile neutrinos with masses in the keV range could
solve several long-standing astrophysical puzzles, from supernova asymmetries
and the pulsar kicks to star formation, reionization, and baryogenesis. The
best current limits on sterile neutrinos come from Chandra and XMM-Newton.
Future advances can be achieved with a high-resolution x-ray spectrometry in

Low energy excitations in graphite: The role of dimensionality and lattice defects
In this paper, we present a high resolution angle resolved photoemission
spectroscopy (ARPES) study of the electronic properties of graphite. We found
that the nature of the low energy excitations in graphite is particularly
sensitive to interlayer coupling as well as lattice disorder. As a consequence
of the interlayer coupling, we observed for the first time the splitting of the
bands by 0.7 eV near the Brillouin zone corner K. At low
binding energy, we observed signatures of massless Dirac fermions with linear
dispersion (as in the case of graphene), coexisting with quasiparticles
characterized by parabolic dispersion and finite effective mass. We also report
the first ARPES signatures of electron-phonon interaction in graphite: a kink
in the dispersion and a sudden increase in the scattering rate. Moreover, the
lattice disorder strongly affects the low energy excitations, giving rise to
new localized states near the Fermi level. These results provide new insights
on the unusual nature of the electronic and transport properties of graphite.Comment: 10 pages, 15 figure
