The 9th EUROSIM Congress on Modelling and Simulation, EUROSIM 2016 Oulu (Finlandia)There are two main drawbacks when operating solar energy systems: a) the resulting energy costs are not yet competitive and b) solar energy is not always available when needed. In order to improve the overall solar plants efficiency, advances control techniques play an important role. In order to develop efficient and robust control techniques, the use of accurate mathematical models is crucial. In this paper, the mathematical modeling of the new TCP100 parabolic trough collector (PTC) research facility at the Plataforma Solar de Almería is presented. Some simulations are shown to demonstrate the adequate behavior of the model compared to the facility design conditions.Junta de Andalucía P11-TEP-8129Unión Europea FP7-ICT-ICT-2013.3.4-611281Ministerio de Economía y Competitividadt DPI2014-56364-C2-2-

Determination of the glass-forming concentration range in binary alloys from a semiempirical theory: Application to Zr-based alloys

    Get PDF
Producción CientíficaA semiempirical theory is presented to calculate free-energy diagrams of glass-forming alloys. The theory is based on the enthalpy of formation of the solid solution expressed as a sum of two contributions: (a) a chemical contribution due to electronic redistribution in forming the alloy, and (b) an elastic contribution arising from the difference in size between solute and solvent atoms. The enthalpy of formation of the amorphous phase has only the chemical contribution. The theory is used to successfully describe the glass-forming concentration range of some Zr-based alloys, which have been experimentally analyzed by several distinct techniques

A polynomial hyperelastic model for the mixture of fat and glandular tissue in female breast

    Get PDF
In the breast of adult women, glandular and fat tissues are intermingled and cannot be clearly distinguished. This work studies if this mixture can be treated as a homogenized tissue. A mechanical model is proposed for the mixture of tissues as a function of the fat content. Different distributions of individual tissues and geometries have been tried to verify the validity of the mixture model. A multiscale modelling approach was applied in a finite element model of a representative volume element (RVE) of tissue, formed by randomly assigning fat or glandular elements to the mesh. Both types of tissues have been assumed as isotropic, quasi-incompressible hyperelastic materials, modelled with a polynomial strain energy function, like the homogenized model. The RVE was subjected to several load cases from which the constants of the polynomial function of the homogenized tissue were fitted in the least squares sense. The results confirm that the fat volume ratio is a key factor in determining the properties of the homogenized tissue, but the spatial distribution of fat is not so important. Finally, a simplified model of a breast was developed to check the validity of the homogenized model in a geometry similar to the actual one

Case Report: Resolution of submacular haemorrhage secondary to exudative age-related macular degeneration after a single intravitreal dobesilate injection

    Get PDF
[Introduction] Submacular haemorrhage is not an unusual cause of acute central vision loss, particularly in older people. It may be caused by a number of conditions, most common of which is exudative age-related madular degeneration. In patients affected by this type of macular degeneration, choroidal neovascularization extends into the subretinal space, producing substantial bleeding in approximately 17% of cases, resulting in large haemorrhages in the subretinal space that detach the neurosensory retina from the supporting retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) layer. This leads to substantial vision loss because of a relatively fast process of extensive photoreceptor atrophy in the overlying neuroretina and formation of macular scars[Case presentation] We describe a patient with submacular haemorrhage secondary to exudative age-related macular degeneration, treated with intravitreal injection of dobesilate. Two months later, visual acuity in the treated eye reached 0.50 with a significant improvement of the distortion and an anatomical resolution of the haemorrhage, as confirmed by optical coherence tomography.[Conclusions] Submacular haemorrhage secondary to exudative age-related macular degeneration can be successfully treated with intravitreal dobesilate. To our knowledge, this is the first case reporting a resolution of submacular haemorrhage after a single dobesilate injection. We acknowledge support by the CSIC Open Access Publication Initiative through its Unit of Information Resources for Research (URICI)Peer reviewe

Concentration Fluctuations in Liquid Alloys of Alkali Metals from Semiempirical Theories of Mixtures

    Get PDF
The semiempirical theories of mixtures developed by van Laar, Margules, Scatchard-Hamer, Wilson and Renon and Prausnitz are used to study the concentration fluctuations of binary liquid alloys formed among the alkali metals. Examination of the fitting capabilities of these theories leads to the conclusion that those of van Laar, Scatchard-Hamer and Renon and Prausnitz are appropriate both when the atomic sizes of the component metals are similar and when there is considerable atomic size mismatch. The Margules and Wilson theories, on the contrary, appear to be restricted only to cases in which the size difference between the two types of atoms is smallThis work was supported in part by a Grant from the Spanish Comisiön Asesora de Investigaciön Cientifica y TecnicaS

Importancia de la educación en las farmacias comunitarias respecto al consumo responsable de alcohol

    Get PDF

Li-decorated Pmmn8 phase of borophene for hydrogen storage. A van der Waals corrected density-functional theory study

    Get PDF
Producción CientíficaWe performed standard and van der Waals-corrected density functional theory calculations to investigate the hydrogen storage capacity of a phase of borophene with Pmmn symmetry and nonzero thickness. This borophene sheet (Pmmn8) has 8 atoms in its unit cell and is more stable than the planar sheet and that the corrugated Pmmn2 sheet (2 atoms in the unit cell). Our results show that, in pristine form, the Pmmn8 sheet is not suited for hydrogen storage applications. However, decoration with Li atoms and strain increase the hydrogen storage ability of the sheet. We performed also a detailed quantum chemical topological analysis that shows that the B-Li interaction in the hydrogenated Li-decorated Pmmn8 sheet is ionic. Our results for the adsorption of H2 on the Li-decorated Pmmn8 sheet are compared with those obtained for the adsorption of H2 on Ti-decorated zigzag graphene nanoribbons.Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades (Project FIS2014-59279-P)Junta de Castilla y León (Project VA124G18)Xunta de Galicia (AGRUP2015/11, ED 431E2018-08 and GRC ED431C

    Fischer-Tropsch synthesis in microchannels

Different metallic supports (aluminum foams of 40ppi, honeycomb monolith and micromonolith of 350 and 1180cpsi, respectively) have been loaded with a 20%Co-0.5%Re/γ-Al2O3 catalyst by the washcoating method. Layers of different thicknesses have been deposited onto the metallic supports. The catalytic coatings were characterized measuring their textural properties, adhesion and morphology. These structured catalysts have been tested in the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS) and compared with a microchannel block presenting perpendicular channels for reaction and cooling. The selectivity depends on the type of support used and mainly on the thickness of the layer deposited. In general, the C5+ selectivity decreased at increasing CO conversion for all of the systems (powder, monoliths, foams and microchannels block). On the other hand, the selectivity to methane increased with the thickness of the catalytic layer due to the higher effective H2/CO ratio over the active sites resulting from the higher diffusivity of H2 compared with CO in the liquid products filling the pores. The C5+ selectivity of the microchannels reactor is higher than that of the structured supports and the powder catalyst.Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación MAT2006-12386-C05, ENE2009-14522-C0
