Urban spatial structure and suburbanisation. The case of the Barcelona Metropolitan
The metropolitan spatial structure displays various patterns, sometimes monocentricity and sometimes multicentricity, which seems much more complicated than the exponential density function used in classic works such as Clark (1961), Muth (1969) or Mills (1973) among others, can effectively represent. It seems that a more flexible density function, such as cubic spline function (Anderson (1982), Zheng (1991), etc.) to describe the density-accessibility relationship is needed. Also, accessibility, the fundamental determinant of density variations, is only partly captured by the inclusion of distance to the city centre as an explanatory variable. Steen (1986) has proposed to correct that miss-especification by including an additional gradient for distance to the nearest transportation axis. In identifying the determinants of urban spatial structure in the context of inter-urban systems, some of the variables proposed by Muth (1969), Mills (1973) and Alperovich (1983) such as city age or population, make no sense in the case of a single urban system. All three criticism to the exponential density function and its determinants apply for the Barcelona Metropolitan Region, a polycentric conurbation structured on well defined transportation axes.Suburbanisation, decentralisation, Barcelona
Characterizing group C*-algebras through their unitary groups: the Abelian case
We study to what extent group C*-algebras are characterized by their unitary groups. A complete characterization of which Abelian group C*-algebras have isomorphic unitary groups is obtained. We compare these results with other unitary-related invariants of C*(Γ), such as the K-theoretic K1(C*(Γ)) and find that C*-algebras of nonisomorphic torsion-free Abelian groups may have isomorphic K1-groups, in sharp contrast with the well-known fact that C*(Γ) (even Γ) is characterized by the topological group structure of its unitary group when Γ is torsion-free and Abelia
Colloidal systems in bone regeneration. Is the size important
Poly lactic-co-glycolic acid (PLGA) is one of the most widely used synthetic polymers for development of delivery systems for drugs and therapeutic biomolecules. Its properties and versatility make it a reference polymer in the manufacturing of nano and microparticles to encapsulate and deliver a wide variety of hydrophobic and hydrophilic molecules, including biomolecules such as proteins or nucleic acids that must be released in a controlled way [1].
Delivery of growth factors such as bone morphogenetic proteins, and specially BMP-2, is an attractive therapeutic strategy for bone tissue engineering. However, their administration is problematic due to their short biological half-lives, localized action and rapid clearance. Consequently, its clinical use requires high doses far exceeding its physiological concentration which implies possible side effects and high costs. These barriers might be overcome by developing new delivery systems which allow a better control of the release rate in order to achieve the desired concentrations in specific site and time [2].
With this aim, in this preliminary study we have synthesized PLGA particles with different diameters, from nano (200 nm) to micro scale (12.5 μm) via double emulsion procedure, in order to study the influence of size in the release profile of lysozyme, which has been selected as an appropriate model for BMP2. A physico-chemical characterization of the particles was done, followed by a complete study on the encapsulation efficiency, cumulative protein release and bioactivity of the released enzyme with and without co-encapsulated bovine serum albumin, a protective biomolecule that can prevent protein instability during emulsification process. Additionally, fluorescently labeled lysozyme was used to study the protein distribution and the influence of particle size on the in vitro cellular uptake.
Artificial Intelligence, a very current technology, is responding to needs and advances, as is happening in the
world of medicine and the automotive industry. There are projects and studies to achieve cancer detection
through image processing with Deep Learning or to achieve autonomous driving of a vehicle. Moving on to
something more everyday, along with these capabilities, Artificial Intelligence is being used by music platforms
to recommend music or make playlists in an automatic and personalised way.
With this evidence as support, this work aims to demonstrate the ability of an algorithm to detect something as
subjective as emotions or feelings in music. This will require a training of processed and prepared data, and an
analysis of the different possibilities of models to find the most effective one.
Thanks to the functioning of Machine Learning algorithms, thousands and thousands of songs will not be
necessary for the algorithm to classify them and relate them to the feelings they arouse in people, but rather,
based on common characteristics that it learns in the training process, it will classify them as if it were any of us,
and we will know what emotion is associated with a type of music.
With the wide range of possibilities presented by Machine Learning and Deep Learning models, Neural
Networks will be the focus of the work. Several combinations and tests will be necessary until an optimal model
is found.
