Using Search Term Positions for Determining Document Relevance

The technological advancements in computer networks and the substantial reduction of their production costs have caused a massive explosion of digitally stored information. In particular, textual information is becoming increasingly available in electronic form. Finding text documents dealing with a certain topic is not a simple task. Users need tools to sift through non-relevant information and retrieve only pieces of information relevant to their needs. The traditional methods of information retrieval (IR) based on search term frequency have somehow reached their limitations, and novel ranking methods based on hyperlink information are not applicable to unlinked documents. The retrieval of documents based on the positions of search terms in a document has the potential of yielding improvements, because other terms in the environment where a search term appears (i.e. the neighborhood) are considered. That is to say, the grammatical type, position and frequency of other words help to clarify and specify the meaning of a given search term. However, the required additional analysis task makes position-based methods slower than methods based on term frequency and requires more storage to save the positions of terms. These drawbacks directly affect the performance of the most user critical phase of the retrieval process, namely query evaluation time, which explains the scarce use of positional information in contemporary retrieval systems. This thesis explores the possibility of extending traditional information retrieval systems with positional information in an efficient manner that permits us to optimize the retrieval performance by handling term positions at query evaluation time. To achieve this task, several abstract representation of term positions to efficiently store and operate on term positional data are investigated. In the Gauss model, descriptive statistics methods are used to estimate term positional information, because they minimize outliers and irregularities in the data. The Fourier model is based on Fourier series to represent positional information. In the Hilbert model, functional analysis methods are used to provide reliable term position estimations and simple mathematical operators to handle positional data. The proposed models are experimentally evaluated using standard resources of the IR research community (Text Retrieval Conference). All experiments demonstrate that the use of positional information can enhance the quality of search results. The suggested models outperform state-of-the-art retrieval utilities. The term position models open new possibilities to analyze and handle textual data. For instance, document clustering and compression of positional data based on these models could be interesting topics to be considered in future research

Health-related social needs (HRSNs) affect health outcomes and healthcare utilization. Patients’ perspectives on the incorporation of HRSN screening in primary care settings is limited. We sought to explore adult primary care patient perspectives of HRSN screening from optional patient-provided free-text comments as part of a pilot self-administered HRSN screening survey on seven domains of HRSNs from the Accountable Health Communities HRSNs Screening Tool. The survey was available in English, Chinese or Spanish with a section titled “Comments” that invited patient respondents to provide anonymous free-text responses. We performed a thematic analysis of the written patient comments. Of the 679 participants surveyed, 93 participants (13.7%) provided written comments. Participants expressed concern for others and gratitude for their health or socio-economic situation, commented on how HRSN screening could improve patient care, and shared stories of overcoming unmet HRSNs in the past. No written comments from participants conveyed dissatisfaction regarding HRSN screening. Identified themes of participant comments show participants’ strong recognition of how health is impacted by unmet HRSNs. Our study adds to the literature of patient perspectives that support a role for HRSN screening in primary care that could help give voice to patient needs and facilitate the delivery of patient-centered care. Group A Streptococcus (GAS) is responsible for mild and common infections like tonsillitis and pharyngitis, and more serious invasive disorders like necrotizing fasciitis and glomerulonephritis. The ability to invade tissues is closely linked to the virulence factors expressed by the bacterium. Hyaluronic acid capsule expression is variable among all the strains in S. pyogenes and confers the capacity to evade the immune response. In a previous study, it was found that capsule production in CovR mutants was temperature-regulated, showing no capsule production at 37℃ but increased production was observed at 25℃. In this study, the objective is to find the elements involved in the thermoregulation using a genetic approach. First, mutants were created by knocking-out CovR, the response regulator of the CovRS two-component system that controls about 15% of GAS genome. Transposon mutants were screened to find changes in capsular phenotype. Colonies expressing capsule at 37℃ were selected for sequencing. The sequencing revealed three different events in different mutants. Two of them pointed at hypothetical proteins, one of them, SpyM3_1255, was phage associated protein with a DnaD domain and the other one, SpyM3_1377, encoded cvfA. A third over-producer mutant showed an insertion in the promoter area of the has operon, the operon that encodes for hyaluronan synthase production, upstream from other disruptions in the promoter area that generated non-producing mutants. This suggest that there is more than one factor involved in thermoregulation of capsule production

The Andean Aesthetic of the Textile and the Darning Procedure in Cuando Sara Chura despierte

From a critical perspective of the autonomy of art, in this paper we will outline the main aesthetic categories of pre-Hispanic Andean philosophy. We will base our study on anthropological studies, but we will also contrast, our object of study with the Western aesthetics of reception represented in our scheme by Jauss in his Small Apology for The Aesthetic Experience (1972). In this double procedure, we will focus on the figure of the textile for its condition of being a central cultural product of the people in the Andes. We will see, that the textile condenses several categories of the andean aesthetics. Once we establish this aproach, we will proceed to highlight the features of the Andean aesthetic that we find in the novel Cuando Sara Chura despierte (2003) by the Bolivian Juan Pablo Piñeiro. Here we will defend that the narrative construction of Piñeiro has a simile with the construction of a textile. We are interested in highlighting how in the literary production to which we refer, both the pre-Hispanic Andean aesthetic and the figure of the textile catalyze sensitive possibilities in their reception, operating in them a decolonial social criticism, which must be rescued
