Functional data learning using convolutional neural networks
In this paper, we show how convolutional neural networks (CNN) can be used in
regression and classification learning problems of noisy and non-noisy
functional data. The main idea is to transform the functional data into a 28 by
28 image. We use a specific but typical architecture of a convolutional neural
network to perform all the regression exercises of parameter estimation and
functional form classification. First, we use some functional case studies of
functional data with and without random noise to showcase the strength of the
new method. In particular, we use it to estimate exponential growth and decay
rates, the bandwidths of sine and cosine functions, and the magnitudes and
widths of curve peaks. We also use it to classify the monotonicity and
curvatures of functional data, algebraic versus exponential growth, and the
number of peaks of functional data. Second, we apply the same convolutional
neural networks to Lyapunov exponent estimation in noisy and non-noisy chaotic
data, in estimating rates of disease transmission from epidemic curves, and in
detecting the similarity of drug dissolution profiles. Finally, we apply the
method to real-life data to detect Parkinson's disease patients in a
classification problem. The method, although simple, shows high accuracy and is
promising for future use in engineering and medical applications.Comment: 38 pages, 23 figure
Effect of Additional Weight on Human Squat Exercise Stability: Ground Reaction Forces and Centers of Pressure
The main focus of this work is to investigate the effect of weight on the stability of human squat exercise. The squat exercise is a common daily activity. Experiments are conducted using one human subject. A VICON motion analysis system integrated with Force Plates is utilized for these experiments. An experimental protocol is developed and followed. This work analyzes the time series of the normal component of the ground reaction forces and each coordinate of the center of pressure. These time series are used to estimate the Lyapunov Exponents using Rosenstein method. MATLAB software package is used for this investigation. The results of this work are compared with results from literature. Present work gives more information relating the safety of the squat exercise when adding additional weight. One can see that the effect of additional weight on stability depends on its value. In the cases of small and moderate additional weight the stability is the same or increases, while for the largest additional weight the investigated stability decrease
Coupled Telegraph and SIR Model of Information and Diseases
In this work, the effect of information propagation on disease spread and vaccination uptake through networks is studied. In this model the information reaches different people at different distances from the center of information containing the health data. We use a pair of Telegraph equations to depict the vaccine and disease information propagation on a network embedded into a straight line. The Telegraph equation is coupled with an SIR (Susceptible-Infected-Recovered) model to examine the anticipated mutual influence. Numerical simulations and stability analysis were made to study the model. We show how the propagation of information about the disease impacts the probability of vaccination and as a consequence the vaccination rate
Quality control test for unreliable meteorological and electrical photovoltaic measurements
Meteorological and electrical measurements using predictive computational techniques have been used in the analysis of photovoltaic system operation and maintenance. International standards establish general and no standardized criteria on the quality control and validation of these measurements. In the present work, a methodology has been developed to correct erroneous photovoltaic experimental measurements: radiation, temperature, current, and voltage. We validated the proposed approach with 12 case studies with more than 5,000 meteorological and electric measurements from an experimental 3 kWp photovoltaic system. The approach is based on a set of non-intrusive criteria developed from the one diode model, the approach allowed to correct about 80% of the erroneous data, 30% more using polynomial regression. As for the regression methodology, we have shown that the proposed methodology includes 4 meteorologicalelectrical variables allowing a more rigorous analysis. For 75% of the cases evaluated, the proposed methodology achieves a better data correction
Effect of Additional Weight on Stability of Human Squat Exercise
The main focus of the study is to analyze the stability of the squat exercise. The squat is a common exercise that persons do for exercise. The study analyze the time series of the normal component of the ground reaction forces and each coordinate of the center of pressure. Theses time series are used to estimate the Lyapunov Exponents using Rosenstein method. MATLAB from Mathworks is used to calculate the graphs and program the methods. We compare this result with the literature and previous experiments. This work gives more information relating the safety of the squat exercise when adding additional weight
Spectrum estimation using frequency shifting and decimation
Parametric spectral estimation techniques are widely used to estimate the parameters of sums of complex sinusoids corrupted by noise. In this work, we show that the numerical stability of the estimated frequencies not only depends on the size of the amplitudes associated to the real frequencies, but also to the distance among frequencies. Therefore, for closely spaced frequencies, the estimates are vulnerable to large deviate from their true values. To overcome this problem we propose a strategy to artificially increase the frequency separation by downsampling the base band equivalent of the noisy signal before applying a spectral estimation technique. This methodology significantly improves the estimation performance especially in the low signal to noise ratio regime. The performance of the technique is assessed in terms of the root mean square error and it is compared to results obtained in previous publications.Fil: Albert, Raymundo Jose. Data quality processing for photovoltaic system measurements
The operation and maintenance activities in photovoltaic systems use meteorological and electrical measurements that must be reliable to check system performance. The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standards have established general criteria to filter erroneous information; however, there is no standardized process for the evaluation of measurements. In the present work we developed 3 procedures to detect and correct measurements of a photovoltaic system based on the single diode model. The performance evaluation of each criterion was tested with 6 groups of experimental measurements from a 3 kWp installation. Based on the error of the 3 procedures performed, the most unfavorable case has been prioritized. Then, the reduction of errors between the estimated and measured value has been achieved, reducing the number of measurements to be corrected. For the clear sky categories, the coefficient of determination is 0.9975 and 0.9961 for the high irradiance profile. Although an increase of 2.5% for coefficient of determination has been achieved, the overcast sky categories should be analyzed in more detail. Finally, the different causes of measurement error should be analyzed, associated with calibration errors and sensor quality

Implications of COVID-19 on women workers in the service sector. A special focus on Spain
Informe aportación española a proyecto europeo. The spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus and its devastating effects has brought to light the contradictions already present in our society. These include the gender gap and the low value placed on care work.
In this contribution, we focus on observing the effects of the syndemic in the Spanish service sector. In the future, it is our intention to collaborate in research aimed at investigating the other two issues, which have not been ad- dressed in this contribution. In southern Europe, Spain, like Italy, was one of the countries which was worst affected by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Italy and Spain share a labour market structure marked by strong gender segregation, high precariousness of women’s employment, and wage restraint in the most female-dominated sectors.
The following study highlights the issue that employment does not always enable women to escape from hardship and poverty. Moreover, the increase in female employment in itself says little about the conditions women face in the labour market. The crisis produced by the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus has put a spotlight on the structural na- ture of gender discrimination in society and the presence of working conditions, which, according to ILO indicators, are far from satisfactory.European Parlament
