Trapping molecules on chips
In the last years, it was demonstrated that neutral molecules can be loaded
on a microchip directly from a supersonic beam. The molecules are confined in
microscopic traps that can be moved smoothly over the surface of the chip. Once
the molecules are trapped, they can be decelerated to a standstill, for
instance, or pumped into selected quantum states by laser light or microwaves.
Molecules are detected on the chip by time-resolved spatial imaging, which
allows for the study of the distribution in the phase space of the molecular
ensemble.Comment: 6 pages, 1 figure. arXiv admin note: text overlap with

An electrostatic elliptical mirror for neutral polar molecules
Focusing optics for neutral molecules finds application in shaping and
steering molecular beams. Here we present an electrostatic elliptical mirror
for polar molecules consisting of an array of microstructured gold electrodes
deposited on a glass substrate. Alternating positive and negative voltages
applied to the electrodes create a repulsive potential for molecules in
low-field-seeking states. The equipotential lines are parallel to the substrate
surface, which is bent in an elliptical shape. The mirror is characterized by
focusing a beam of metastable CO molecules and the results are compared to the
outcome of trajectory simulations.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
gas phase vibrational spectroscopy of V3O6-8+
We present gas phase vibrational spectra of the trinuclear vanadium oxide
cations V3O6+·He1–4, V3O7+·Ar0,1, and V3O8+·Ar0,2 between 350 and 1200 cm−1.
Cluster structures are assigned based on a comparison of the experimental and
simulated IR spectra. The latter are derived from B3LYP/TZVP calculations on
energetically low-lying isomers identified in a rigorous search of the
respective configurational space, using higher level calculations when
necessary. V3O7+ has a cage-like structure of C3v symmetry. Removal or
addition of an O-atom results in a substantial increase in the number of
energetically low-lying structural isomers. V3O8+ also exhibits the cage
motif, but with an O2 unit replacing one of the vanadyl oxygen atoms. A chain
isomer is found to be most stable for V3O6+. The binding of the rare gas atoms
to V3O6–8+ clusters is found to be strong, up to 55 kJ/mol for Ar, and
markedly isomer-dependent, resulting in two interesting effects. First, for
V3O7+·Ar and V3O8+·Ar an energetic reordering of the isomers compared to the
bare ion is observed, making the ring motif the most stable one. Second,
different isomers bind different number of rare gas atoms. We demonstrate how
both effects can be exploited to isolate and assign the contributions from
multiple isomers to the vibrational spectrum. The present results exemplify
the structural variability of vanadium oxide clusters, in particular, the
sensitivity of their structure on small perturbations in their environment
Effective actions, Wilson lines and the IR/UV mixing in noncommutative supersymmetric gauge theories
We study IR/UV mixing effects in noncommutative supersymmetric Yang-Mills
theories with gauge group U(N) using background field perturbation theory. We
compute three- and four-point functions of background fields, and show that the
IR/UV mixed contributions to these correlators can be reproduced from an
explicitly gauge-invariant effective action, which is expressed in terms of
open Wilson lines.Comment: 23 pages, 8 figures. v2: new section and references added, effective
action expressed only in terms of open Wilson lines operator
BMN operators with vector impurities, Z_2 symmetry and pp-waves
We calculate the coefficients of three-point functions of BMN operators with
two vector impurities. We find that these coefficients can be obtained from
those of the three-point functions of scalar BMN operators by interchanging the
coefficient for the symmetric-traceless representation with the coefficient for
the singlet. We conclude that the Z_2 symmetry of the pp-wave string theory is
not manifest at the level of field theory three-point correlators.Comment: 25 pages, 7 figures. v1: A reference and a footnote added; v2: New
contributions found, Z_2 symmetry lost in 3-point function
Giustizia e letteratura II
The book explores and links different cultures, disciplines and perspectives, with a far more original and broad approach to the relations between “Justice” and “Literature” than more traditional works focused on “Law” and “Literature”. The many contributions from writers, literature and movie critics, psychologists, and criminal law practitioners and scholars, draw a complex and interdisciplinary path through primary texts of Italian and international literature, with the aim of prompting readers’ reflections about core issues related to law, crime, and responsibility. Through the analysis of masterpieces of literature, theatre and cinema, this book aims at stimulating dialogue and debate, as well as critical abilities and a deep-rooted sense of justice, amongst both law professionals and citizens at large. Literature and other forms of narration are presented here as a privileged key to approach long-standing questions about (amongst other) causes and consequences of crime; victimization and coping mechanisms; the role of criminal law and criminal proceedings; legalism and equity; law and ethics; the ‘time’ of justice; freedom, responsibility, culpability and forgiveness; rules, legality, socialization and culture; language and images as mediums for justice issues; the impact of prejudice and of existing balances of power on the application of the law; social and legal mechanisms of exclusion and inclusion; gender issues and legal systems; and so on. A whole section (Part V) is devoted to crimes against humanity and how the literary testimony may be understood both as a strategy to resist injustice and to seek justice, and as a way to prevent further horrors. Through this quest for justice in literature and arts, the volume proposes a wider cultural and research project which defies traditional formalistic and retributive approaches to criminal law, in order to open new perspectives for restorative and reintegrative strategies

List of Publications 195The geometric and electronic structure of mass-selected gas phase cluster ions
has been studied by vibrational spectroscopy in the spectral region from 500
to 2000 cm-1. Mass-selected cluster ions were stored in a helium filled radio
frequency hexadecapole ion trap and excited using tunable infrared radiation
from a free electron laser. The photodissociation spectrum was recorded by
monitoring the parent and fragment yields as a function of the excitation
wavelength.
The 500- 1500 cm-1 spectral region is particularly revealing for metal oxides,
because typical vibration frequencies for metal-oxygen single bonds lie
between 500 and 1000 cm-1 and between 900 and 1200 cm-1 for metal-oxygen
double bonds. Metal oxides are studied in the first part of this work. An
extensive study has been carried out on vanadium oxide clusters anions. The
infrared absorption of vanadium oxide cluster anions can be grouped in three
spectral regions. The infrared transitions of (i) superoxo, (ii) vanadyl and
(iii) V-O-V and V-O· single bond modes are found at ~1100 cm-1, 1020 to 990
cm-1, and 900 to 580 cm-1, respectively. Starting with V4O10- and for larger
clusters caged structures of higher symmetry are found to be exceptionally
stable. Evidence for size-dependent charge localization is found for the
polyhedral cage structures of (V2O5)n- clusters (n=2,3,4). Even though the
largest cluster anion studied here, V8O20-, is still rather small, it reveals
some striking similarities with the properties of a vanadium oxide single-
crystal surface, making it an interesting gas-phase model for surface
adsorption and reactivity studies.
For the aluminum oxide cluster cations, the corundum derived structure of the
(Al2O3)4+ gas phase cluster is demonstrated not to be the global minimum. The
global minimum structure has no common features with any of the known Al2O3
bulk phases, contrary to previous assumptions and calculations. Also the
structures of smaller alumina oxide cluster cations with the (Al2O3)1 4(AlO)+
composition are found to be different from bulk-derived, or ''chemical
intuitive'', ones. They are rather curved two-dimensional networks, based on
hexagons of alternating aluminum and oxygen atoms. The evolution of the
structure with cluster size can be followed spectroscopically observing that
the most intense absorption band is due to vibration modes of atoms from the
perimetric ring.
Furthermore, the geometric and electronic structure of bimetallic oxide
clusters is studied as a function of their composition. Singly substituted
(V2O5)n-1(VTiO5)- cluster anions with n=1- 3 are shown to form polyhedral
caged structures similar to those predicted for their isoelectronic
counterparts, the neutral (V2O5)n clusters. Upon systematic exchange of V by
Ti atoms in V4 -nTinO10- (n=0 -3), the structure does not change. The stress
induced by the isomorphous substitution results in an increased number of
unpaired electrons (n-1) for the Ti-rich systems, leading to a triplet ground
state for VTi3O10-.
Experiments in the 500- 2000 cm-1 spectral region access directly the strong
proton transfer modes, water libration and bending modes, and the ammonia
bending mode. These modes are particularly sensitive to intermolecular
coordinations and their study offers a privileged view on solvation networks.
Solvated ions are studied in the second part of this work. Results for the
protonated ammonia clusters NH4+(NH3)n agree satisfactorily with recent
calculations. They show that the fundamental frequency of the proton transfer
in the n=1 cluster is more than 200 cm-1 lower than previously predicted.
Surprisingly, evidence for proton transfer is also found in the n=4 cluster,
contrary to any expectation. The first solvation shell clearly closes at n=4.
The evolution of the water solvation network is studied for two systems. The
spectra of SO42 -·(H2O)n dianions (n=3 -24) represent the first infrared
spectra of multiply-charged anions in the gas phase. They show four main bands
assigned to two vibrations of the dianionic core, the water bending mode, and
solvent libration. The triply degenerate SO42 - antisymmetric stretch
vibration probes the local solvent symmetry, while the solvent librational
band is sensitive to the hydrogen bonding network. A highly symmetric
structure is found for the n=6 cluster and closure of the first solvation
shell is found at n=12. The spectra of the water cluster anions (H2O)n-,
n=15 50, show signals in two frequency regions centered around 700 cm-1 and
1500 -1650 cm-1, corresponding to water librational and bending motions,
respectively. The bending feature associated with a double-acceptor water
molecule binding to the excess electron is clearly seen up to n=35, but above
n=25 this feature begins to blue-shift and broaden, suggesting a more
delocalized electron binding motif for the larger clusters in which the excess
electron interacts with multiple water molecules.
entsprechenden Zusammensetzung korrelieren. Hierbei wurde festgestellt, dass
einfach substituierte (V2O5)n-1(VTiO5)- Clusteranionen mit n=1 -3 ähnliche
polyherale Käfigstrukuten bilden, wie die entsprechend isoelektronischen
(V2O5)n Clustersysteme im neutralen Zustand. Der systematische Austausch von
V- gegen Ti-Atome in V4- nTinO10- (n=0- 3) zeigt keine weitere geometrische

Polyhedral vanadium oxide cages: Infrared spectra of cluster anions and size-induced d electron localization
Explicitly isolating data and computation in high level synthesis: The role of polyhedral framework
The increased computational power required by modern large-scale computing system is pushing the adoption of heterogeneous components into mainstream. While Graphic Processing Units (GPUs) are frequently adopted as core heterogeneous computational elements, Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) based heterogeneous systems are being investigated and adopted due to their claimed superiority in power efficiency. However, the lack of proper approaches and methodologies to systematically push the performance of such devices are among the principal factors limiting the adoption of these devices into mainstream. In this paper, we investigate the adoption of Polyhedral Analysis (PA) to extract data level parallelism from sequential code, defining a methodology for High Level Synthesis (HLS) aimed at FPGA based system. We show how our approach systematically produces speedups proportional to the amount of data level parallelism available in the input programs
