Application of the generalized reduced gradient method to conceptual aircraft design
The complete aircraft design process can be broken into three phases of increasing depth: conceptual design, preliminary design, and detail design. Conceptual design consists primarily of developing general arrangements and selecting the configuration that optimally satisfies all mission requirements. The result of the conceptual phase is a conceptual baseline configuration that serves as the starting point for the preliminary design phase. The conceptual design of an aircraft involves a complex trade-off of many independent variables that must be investigated before deciding upon the basic configuration. Some of these variables are discrete (number of engines), some represent different configurations (canard vs conventional tail) and some may represent incorporation of new technologies (aluminum vs composite materials). At Lockheed-Georgia, the sizing program is known as GASP (Generalized Aircraft Sizing Program). GASP is a large program containing analysis modules covering the many different disciplines involved fin defining the aricraft, such as aerodynamics, structures, stability and control, mission performance, and cost. These analysis modules provide first-level estimates the aircraft properties that are derived from handbook, experimental, and historical sources
Single Transverse-Spin Asymmetries in Drell-Yan Processes
The asymmetry in the angular distribution of Drell--Yan dilepton pairs
generated in collisions where just one nucleon is transversely polarised has
been examined in the literature with a variety of results, mainly differing by
factors of two. We re-evaluate the asymmetry via twist-3 contributions in
collinear factorisation. In order to allow complete and in-depth comparison
with existing calculations, we supply all calculational details.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, final version, accepted for publication in Eur.

Polymer chain in a quenched random medium: slow dynamics and ergodicity breaking
The Langevin dynamics of a self - interacting chain embedded in a quenched
random medium is investigated by making use of the generating functional method
and one - loop (Hartree) approximation. We have shown how this intrinsic
disorder causes different dynamical regimes. Namely, within the Rouse
characteristic time interval the anomalous diffusion shows up. The
corresponding subdiffusional dynamical exponents have been explicitly
calculated and thoroughly discussed. For the larger time interval the disorder
drives the center of mass of the chain to a trap or frozen state provided that
the Harris parameter, , where is a
disorder strength, is a Kuhnian segment length, is a chain length and
is the Flory exponent. We have derived the general equation for the non -
ergodicity function which characterizes the amplitude of frozen Rouse
modes with an index . The numerical solution of this equation has
been implemented and shown that the different Rouse modes freeze up at the same
critical disorder strength where the exponent
and does not depend from the solvent quality.Comment: 17 pages, 6 figures, submitted to EPJB (condensed matter
A supersymmetric matrix model: II. Exploring higher-fermion-number sectors
Continuing our previous analysis of a supersymmetric quantum-mechanical
matrix model, we study in detail the properties of its sectors with fermion
number F=2 and 3. We confirm all previous expectations, modulo the appearance,
at strong coupling, of {\it two} new bosonic ground states causing a further
jump in Witten's index across a previously identified critical 't Hooft
coupling . We are able to elucidate the origin of these new SUSY
vacua by considering the limit and a strong coupling
expansion around it.Comment: 14 pages, 4 figure
Effect of stretching on the ballistic conductance of Au nanocontacts in presence of CO: a density functional study
CO adsorption on an Au monatomic chain is studied within density functional
theory in nanocontact geometries as a function of the contact stretching. We
compare the bridge and atop adsorption sites of CO, finding that the bridge
site is energetically favored at all strains studied here. Atop adsorption
gives rise to an almost complete suppression of the ballistic conductance of
the nanocontact, while adsorption at the bridge site results in a conductance
value close to 0.6 G0, in agreement with previous experimental data. We show
that only the bridge site can qualitatively account for the evolution of the
conductance as a function of the contact stretching observed in the
experimental conductance traces. The numerical discrepancy between the
theoretical and experimental conductance slopes is rationalized through a
simple model for the elastic response of the metallic leads. We also verify
that our conductance values are not affected by the specific choice of the
nanocontact geometry by comparing two different atomistic models for the tips
Correlation energy in a spin polarized two dimensional electron liquid in the high density limit
We have obtained an analytic expression for the ring diagrams contribution to
the correlation energy of a two dimensional electron liquid as a function of
the uniform fractional spin polarization. Our results can be used to improve on
the interpolation formulas which represent the basic ingredient for the
constructions of modern spin-density functionals in two dimensions.Comment: 3 pages, 1 figur
