Market microstructure, bank's behaviour and interbank spreads
We present an empirical analysis of the European electronic interbank market of overnight lending (e-MID) during the years 1999–2009. The main goal of the paper is to explain the observed changes of the cross-sectional dispersion of lending/borrowing conditions before, during and after the 2007–2008 subprime crisis. Unlike previous contributions, that focused on banks’ dependent and macro information as explanatory variables, we address the role of banks’ behaviour and market microstructure as determinants of the credit spreads

Banks’ strategies and cost of money: Effects of the financial crisis on the European electronic overnight interbank market
We present an empirical analysis of the European electronic interbank market of overnight lend- ing e-MID during the years 1999–2009. After introducing the peculiar market mechanism, we consider the activity, defined as the number of trades per day; the spreads, defined as the differ- ence between the rate of a transaction and the key rates of the European Central Bank; the lending conditions, defined as the difference between the costs of a lent and a borrowed Euro; the bank strategies, defined through different variants of the cumulative volume functions; etc. Among other facts, it emerges that the lending conditions differ from bank to bank, and that the bank strategies are not strongly associated either to the present, past or future spreads. Moreover, we show the presence of a bid-ask spread-like effect and its behavior during the crisis

We present a study of the European electronic interbank market of overnight lending (e-MID) before and after the beginning of the financial crisis. The main goal of the paper is to explain the structural changes of lending/borrowing features due to the liquidity turmoil. Unlike previous contributions that focused on banks' dependent and macro information as explanatory variables, we address the role of banks' behaviour and market microstructure as determinants of the credit spreads. We show that all banks experienced significant variations in their liquidity costs due to the sensitivity of interbank rates to the timing and side of trades. We argue that, while larger banks did experience better funding conditions after the crisis, this was not just a consequence of the \too big to fail" perception of the market. Larger banks have been able to play more strategically when managing their liquidity by taking advantage of the changing market microstructure

Financial regulations and bank credit to the real economy
We present a new agent-based model focusing on the linkage between the interbank market and the real economy with a stylised central bank acting as lender of last resort. Using this model we address the tradeoff between stability and economic performance for different structures of the interbank market. We also explore the efficacy of recent regulatory reforms using our richer model. Our results suggest that the effects of regulatory leverage ratios on the banking sector's performance can vary in a complex and non-monotonic way with the state of the economy, the degree of connectivity of the interbank market and the amount of information available to market participants on bank risks
Evolution of controllability in interbank networks
The Statistical Physics of Complex Networks has recently provided new theoretical tools for policy makers. Here we extend the notion of network controllability to detect the financial institutions, i.e. the drivers, that are most crucial to the functioning of an interbank market. The system we investigate is a paradigmatic case study for complex networks since it undergoes dramatic structural changes over time and links among nodes can be observed at several time scales. We find a scale-free decay of the fraction of drivers with increasing time resolution, implying that policies have to be adjusted to the time scales in order to be effective. Moreover, drivers are often not the most highly connected "hub" institutions, nor the largest lenders, contrary to the results of other studies. Our findings contribute quantitative indicators which can support regulators in developing more effective supervision and intervention policies
Analysis of the reactivity of indirect immunofluorescence in patients with pemphigus foliaceus and pemphigus vulgaris using rat bladder epithelium as a substrate
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the reactivity of indirect immunofluorescence using rat bladder epithelium as a substrate in patients with pemphigus foliaceus and pemphigus vulgaris from the Department of Dermatology, University of São Paulo Medical School, Brazil. METHODS: Thirty-two patients (8 male and 24 female) from the Department of Dermatology, University of São Paulo Medical School, were selected. Three had mucosal pemphigus vulgaris, 20 had mucocutaneous pemphigus vulgaris, and 9 had pemphigus foliaceus. Patients’ sera were tested by indirect immunofluorescence performed on human foreskin and rat bladder epithelium and by ELISA assays utilizing baculovirus-expressed recombinant desmoglein 3 and desmoglein 1. RESULTS: No patients with mucosal pemphigus vulgaris, 5 of 20 patients with mucocutaneous pemphigus vulgaris (25%) and 4 of 9 patients with pemphigus foliaceus (44%) had positive indirect immunofluorescence using rat bladder epithelium as a substrate. CONCLUSION: Indirect immunofluorescence using rat bladder epithelium as a substrate is recommended whenever a diagnosis of paraneoplastic pemphigus is considered. The identification of a subset of pemphigus foliaceus and pemphigus vulgaris patients that recognizes desmoplakins by this laboratory tool is critical to avoid the misdiagnosis of paraneoplastic pemphigus
